Locke & Key

Coincidentally I was raising this issue over on the comics project: WT:CMC#Metaseries. I know you've based this on The Dark Tower comics (and The Stand looks similar) but neither of them are really how comics series are usually dealt with. You'd usually expand an article and if looks like something needs splitting then we can discuss it and we have dealt with much longer stories within one article before and I can't see why this can't all be done in one article (esp. as we need to conform to WP:WAF and keep plot down to a minimum WP:PLOT).

I won't do anything with the other article for now and see what the consensus is - if it is thought to be OK to do it like this then I'll revert my edits. (Emperor (talk) 15:59, 9 December 2008 (UTC))

OK. I was thinking about reverting my edits for the time being (as nothing is lost we can always set it back to the version people required) but threw a link in instead which does the same job.
As a sidenote (and nothing to be changed right now) but WP:WTUT and WP:PLOT would suggest not using tables for issue-by-issue plot breakdowns. However, we can deal with that later. (Emperor (talk) 20:31, 9 December 2008 (UTC))

Stubs

You removed the stub template from Tim Palen with the edit summary "Removing Stub Template since this already possesses the Under Construction Template". Please understand that a stub template places an article in a particular rating category; while I assume you intend to expand it at some point soon, it's really not appropriate to remove the template until it's of a higher rating – at least start class. I'm really loving the page, but could you change the font? I don't mind a fancy font (and if you find a better one please add it), but I think the left pane especially is a bit difficult to read. We've now fixed that error with the example uses of the banner in the documentation, so you won't need your novel workaround solution ;) Do you mind if I remove the includeonly tags from Template:WikiProject Veronica Mars again? It's just that it's supressing a category (Category:WikiProject banners without quality assessment) which might just prevent your banner getting maintenance in the future? Growing Up With Horror

I grew up on the films that are considered classics. I was known as an expert in it by friends and coworkers. I spent years studying the genre with purchasing books,magazines, and going to film conventions.

Horror Project

To be honest, I don't know. The WikiProject Horror page itself is not frequented often by its members. I agree, that the whole thing is in desperate need of an overhaul and some more "active" members to run it. I think we've brought this up on the talk page before, but I cannot remember. Either way, since you seem interested, maybe you should start a talk page discussion detailing everything that needs to be updated, addressed, etc. and we can go from there. If need be, I'll even start to take a more active role in the actual project (I usually just edit the articles within).  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 20:50, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Actually, I was doing just that. At the moment I was just looking at the Film page and trying to create a sidebar just for our project. I've added some pages and deleted things that don't apply to us but we'll have to create some of these red links (they deal with the coordinators and cleanup crews). I'm going to try and get over to the Novel Project to check out their page and see what works for them. I like our feature article listing better than the Film Project's listing, so I'll probably keep that...but I don't think we need all those dates in there.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 06:44, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Interesting. Do you have an idea of what kind of pages you would want to watch? I know the film project has a ratings crew. Shortly after they elected their coordinators they got together and made a ratings crew that went around and assessed all of the "B" articles to see if they really fit the criteria. Sure, I'd be your assistant. Fair warning, my classes just started up again for this semester so I'm largely inactive from 8 - 8pm on Monday - Wednesday, and 8 - 5pm on Thursday and Friday. I still check and do what I can when I wake up and on my lunch break, but I cannot do major tasks until the evening and the weekends. Also, let me know what kind of things in the Project Novel you like so I can add it to our page. Ok. If we're just going to call them something like, "WikiProject Horror/To-do list" or "WikiProject Horror"/Coordinators"...then I'll go ahead and create the links on the sidebar. This way, then they are up and running they'll turn blue automatically.
I'm sure the ratings crew does, but their first concern were all of the articles that don't get formal reviews (as GA and FA do). I think that should be our focus first, and once we've re-assessed all of the articles that are below GA and FA, we can re-assess those as well.
Just let me know what you need me to do and I'll try and get it done ASAIC. I'm home for my lunch break and saw your message. No problems. I've been busy trying to get the sidebar and the announcement templates done that I haven't made much progress with the project page. I need to study the novel project's page a bit to see what they have that is well organized (leave it to the novel people to have really neat stuff :D). I have replaced the FA, GA, etc lists with our format. I removed that "date written" stuff...it really means nothing. At the most, if you want, I'm contemplating putting back the date it passed FA, A, GA so that we can do a quick skim and see which articles are probably the closest to failing the criteria for their respective status - as the criteria has become stricter as time has gone one. I'll make note of that for when I get back from class tonight. Personally, I think we need a "primary author". I don't like getting personal credit for that stuff, because a lot of people help in some regard, whether it is copy editing or something else. Jack Pierce

You may know, I have added lots of information with diffrent text/information on the Jack Pierce article. I have been working on it for almost a year. Someone had taken an article that was virtually identicle from another website and placed it on Wiki. I could not believe that once I noticed it. I have been changing it so it would not be similar.

Horror Newsletter

Have you given some thought to orchestrating a newsletter to go out to all of our members, kind of like how the Film Project does?  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 13:40, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

I've thought about it a bit, but I'm more concerned with getting the project as a whole up-to-par before worrying about a newsletter. While a newsletter would help keep membership informed about various tasks and notices, I feel like the project proper has to be more fluidly organized so that members can find things when they want to help out. Not the most fun, but all the Saw task force articles have to have their banners shifted to {{Horror|saw-task-force=yes}} with any class and importance carried over. Adding saw-importance to the same might be good, even if the task force proper wants to change those priorities in the future.
Likewise, all the Saw task force categories have to be placed in-line with the WikiProject Horror categories. I think I got all the proper categories placed, but I'm running out of steam on that project.
I want to make the Notice Board more fluid and easy-to-use, so any thoughts on that matter would be good.
And the Outreach page has to be done still.

Thanks for doing that; I've been going blurry-eyed tagging things. You wouldn't happen to know Perl, would you? I've been trying to compose some rules for the New Articles bot to follow, but my Perl abilities are, well, piss poor (to be honest). The bot is located at User:AlexNewArtBot and I've already selected a name for the feed (Horror) and announced the feed (#8 under Arts and Entertainment). The rules would be placed at User:AlexNewArtBot/Horror. If this is something you can't do, let me know so I can continue to muddle with it.
I completely revamped HCOTM today. Feel free to improve further if you think there's anything I missed.

WikiProject Horror Showcase

Huh? I've been on two computers with it today (a Mac and a PC) and can view them all (FA-Class, FA-Class nominees, A-Class, Did You Know? articles, GA-Class candidates, and GA-Class). What are you seeing? It should be in two columns (using the {{col-begin}}, {{col-2}}, and {{col-end}} templates). Have you tried purging the cache? No, I see two columns. But I only see FA and GA. I don't see dates attached to the FA articles (even though they are listed in the "edit" screen). I don't see A-Class, I don't see FAC or GAC, or DYK...but I see them all in the edit screen. I see them fine (and it looks good) in Firefox. I just realized, we're going to have to go through all of the literature articles and tag all of the ones that are horror related. At 2600 articles, we haven't even begun to get all of the Horror-related ones. I'm pretty sure we don't have the vast majority of Stephen King's novels, or any prolific horror writer. Then again, upon looking at some of his books...maybe they all are tagged. Speaking of the tag, you have Saw task force as an option, but what about the other task forces?  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 02:39, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Oh, yes; there are a LOT of articles that aren't tagged. Scary, isn't it?
The Saw task force is a primary of WP Horror (there base is located under ours), but the others are located elsewhere and either have a unique banner or are a bannered under a different WikiProject. Wikipedia:WikiProject Alien really should be a task force rather than a WikiProject. Any interest in trying to convince them move? hornoir (talk) 02:56, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

I think it is common courtesy to request the change in their talk space and await approval (or non-reply for reasonable period) before being bold and moving them. Here's the "convincing" I did to WikiProject Saw: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Horror/Saw task force#Task force merger. I leave it in your capable hands, though, if you wish to undertake the task.  :)
And yes, your WP:NOTE comment is probably correct. I find a lot of WikiProjects that should be task forces overcompensate in that department.

Let the battle begin. Then again, there are apparently only 9 active members (according to the Project's page...but that hasn't been touched since October 08)...and there hasn't been activity on the talk page since December 23. There might not be that many people actively watching the page. We'll see. But, with 9 members and a whole slew of articles that could be merged into larger, single articles...I'm really surprised this is a Project. Not to mention that the nav box encompasses Alien, Predator and Alien vs. Predator articles (it's kind of bloating the nav box to make it appear to be larger).

Excellent. I was just about to ask you to check again. Thanks for contacting the Alien project... If no one has replied in a reasonable time (two weeks?), then just boldly enact the move. Task forces/work groups didn't originally exist, so a lot of WikiProjects that shouldn't have been created were; but now that task forces are common practice, those projects have to be brought it.
To be honest, WikiProject Horror probably wouldn't be created today. Fantasy and Science-Fiction task forces are set-up within WP:NOVELS, so I assume the WikiProject Counsel would've advised something similar for us in this day and age. Thankfully, we'll exploit the entire Grandfathering rule of existence.  :)

Horror Newsletter (Part 2)

Reset over to the left side as I'm getting tired of the tabs. Perl is a programming language that is, well, annoying. At this point, I've told the New Article bot to send articles that have the {{horror-stub}}, horror fiction, horror film, and Category:Horror but exclude anything with the Category:Science fiction studies (which is strangely located under Category:Horror). I can't rightly think of other terms to look for that might indicate it belongs under WikiProject Horror but hasn't been tagged as such. Suggestions?

Don't laugh, as I was considering paranormal romance as one of the tags. Anything that COULD fall under our purview should be there, basically. I was considering listing all the major film franchises and horror authors as well, but with lesser point counts… thus inclusion of the tag alone wouldn't make it register, but multiple small tags might.
I have another very exciting task that needs to get done. When I had wrote every member on the participant list (remember those days, all of a month ago), I noticed a few were deleted, retired, etc. Can you go through and...
  1. Remove deleted accounts from the list
  2. Merge accounts that state they have been renamed (if the renamed account is also on the list; an example being my own located at #62)
  3. Retire (to the Inactive members section) renamed accounts where the newest name isn't on the new list
  4. Retire (to the Inactive members section) accounts that specifically are announced as retired
I'm sorry to dump this on you, but these things need to get done. And I did go through and standardize the entire membership into one format. That wasn't fun, trust me...

I have OCD, so when I think of something that needs to be done I find it hard not just to do it myself right then and there. It makes me a great workhorse for things, but not real great on the sharing of responsibility. Cleaning up vandalism is such an important thing; best of luck with that. I think the Project is slowly getting to the point where it can be easily maintained with minimal work, which is what I'm hoping for... so that future coordinators won't have to focus on minor things and can instead promote the project, help with reviews, etc. hornoir (talk) 00:21, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm straight with the changes. One thing, is the "watch, edit, etc." banner for the Announcement template off for you? When I view the newsletter, that sub-banner that sits atop the announcement template is shifted to the right, so that it sits "off screen", so to speak. I just double-checked and the Announcement template banner is fine for me. But I know an easy way to take care of it... the edit banner only appears in BASEPAGENAME WikiProject Horror now (the main project space). There is good and bad to this, but I'll see if I can't figure out what was causing the problem and fix it at a later date. Hmm. If there was a way to find out if it was going to send next month or this month, then I'd say go ahead and hand deliver if it was next month. Newsletter delivery

Can you make changes to it once it's been accepted? If so, and it won't be delivered until March...then maybe we can update it to a March newsletter. If not, well then I guess we'll just figure out what to do then.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 15:38, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure I understand the initial inquiry 100%; the newsletter, once delivered, can't be altered (to my knowledge). The bot simply runs pre-programmed task which I have limited control over (since it is not my bot), thus I can't alter the tasks greatly. Every month, the bot automatically tries to deliver the new newsletter (based on established location control, in this case /CURRENTMONTH CURRENTYEAR) and won't retry if it fails. The new newsletter must be finished before the first of the delivery month (in general).
The February newsletter is already archived within the WikiProject Counsel, so we can't really say there isn't a February newsletter. If the bot doesn't deliver it, then we can either hand-deliver it or just create a new March newsletter and let February stand as an archive only event.
I mailed the bot control to hopefully get clarity on the situation. Let me know if I answered your question, as I'm not sure I did. hornoir (talk) 15:57, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Not really. This newsletter is for February and has been logged with the WikiProject Councel already. I agree, I was excited to see it. When it arrived I was like, "Yes, now we have the rest of the month for people to filter back in to the project and we can get this stuff rolling". I meant within the project, but there is a lot of article work that needs to be done… have you seen the laundry list the is the cleanup page? I haven't given it much thought. This is the most active I've been within the Project itself. I usually just stick to articles (which I'm really behind on fixing all of those Friday the 13th articles. I got the franchise article and Jason done a long time ago, but I haven't finished the individual films. Whatever I do, I know that I don't have the time to devote to the role of coordinator, so I wouldn't even put my hat in that ring.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 03:42, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Alien Project

There does not seem to be a lot of apprehension about turning that into a task force. I think, should this actually get done, the first step will be to assess the notability of all those articles that are sketchy and see if they can be merged into an article of broader scope. Well, first I'd like to rewrite their template to conform with the locations for categories that a task force would get, that would automatically shift over the ratings and whatnot to the proper place. Hello. I see you've been working on this template which I converted to {{WPBannerMeta}} back in November. I was wondering why you stopped using the meta. Was it not working as you wished? You've done a good job with the template, but you will certainly find it easier to maintain in the future if you convert it again. Please let me know if I can help in any way. I find {{WPBannerMeta}} too limiting… I'm able to accomplish more with greater control without using it. If you look over the revised template carefully, you'll see I've done quite a few things (some of which make it easier for those trying to fill out the project banner on talk pages) that one can't do within the WPBannerMeta framework. Yes, they are separate peer reviews. Wikipedia: Peer Reviews is meant to be a wiki-wide review, while WikiProjects host their own individual peer reviews. You could have an article peer reviewed by all WikiProjects it falls under at once, but each would have their own review page. hornoir (talk) 21:25, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

To be honest, the Wikipedia Peer Review section tends to get the same handful of people replying to the article… and articles only stay there for a month. WikiProjects tend to let reviews stay up until the article gets to FA class. It's a big difference in that regard. hornoir (talk) 15:21, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Well, unfortunately, that does happen. But remember that reviews are just advice, not set-in-stone law. Go with whatever makes the most sense for the best reasoning. I tend to find WikiProject reviews to be a bit more focused on the topic (and understanding of it), which Wikipedia reviews are great for understanding how someone without a basis of understanding reads the page. It's important to find a balance between both. And, to be honest, most people don't review a piece after the first time. I don't know why, but they assume the first reviewer did their job. I've been watching (I watchlisted it when you first created it). It looks good. I don't think I'll put my name in, because of my schedule it is much easier for me to assist in a non-formal way. That way, I don't run the risk of being "absent" from my position for extended periods of time. It's one of the reasons I never put my name in the Coordinator ring for FILM, or HORROR. Sequencing & Count of Locke & Key

The only online references I can find that Head Games has 6 issues are the IDW shop site (I wasn't sure if this was usable) and the inside of the actual comics (which state "of 6"): http://store.idwpublishing.com/product_info.php?products_id=1513

I think you're slightly misreading the interview quote, which I tried to make clear in my summary of the change (but ran out of room, I should have stuck this on the discussion page):

"Welcome to Lovecraft was really the prologue. [...] There's gonna be 24 issues. [... I]t has a bit of a three-act structure, so the first 12 issues are one act… something happens at the end of issue #12 which begins to change things. The next 12 issues are Act 2, and then that final graphic novel will be Act 3"

See, my reading of this is:

  • Act 1 == Welcome to Lovecraft + Head Games == 6 issues + 6 issues == first 12 issues
  • Act 2 == 12 issues
  • Act 3 == Graphic novel

A prologue generally occurs _within_ a text, and it seems to me that he's including it in Act 1 in his comments.

And while he states that the next 12 issues will be Act 2, he doesn't say that the numbering will be 13-24, and given that Head Games is numbered 1-6, I would expect the same to happen for the next arc (or at the very least, to _not_ make this claim because nothing supports it).

To be honest, I'm a little confused as to why you keep changing my edit to state that "Head Games" has 12 issues when I'm holding the actual issue #1 in my hand and it _clearly_ states (#1 of 6) on the inside cover. Authors say things in interviews all the time that aren't born out by the actual publication; I'm hoping the published comic is considered slightly more authoritative of the truth than something the writer idly said months prior to its release.

Thanks for the continued assistance offer… but I know you had said time was tight with schoolwork and whatnot, so I don't want to bother you more than needs to. Instead of using the newsletter model I constructed, I was thinking of sending out a simple bulletin telling members about the coordinator election and the collaboration of the month. Try and emphasize those two aspects. 'Cause, I'll be honest, I don't really want to be the lead coordinator… so I'll be quite happy if someone else gets nominated in. I can't understand your reverts. In fact all banner templates are being upgraded to use {{WPBannerMeta}}. During the upgrade I maintained backwards compatibility with all vital parameters.
