Replaceable fair use File:Celebration single.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Celebration single.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Metacritic Critic reviews[edit]

⚠

You have changed the url of Metacritic for many articles, withdrawing <</critic-reviews>> at the end of urls for [1] and [2] and [3]. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia; wiki doesn't show the opinions of fans who post on this type of site to counterbalance the professionnal reviews. As you did that on purpose many times, this is not an accident, I firmly ask you to never do this again. You've been warned. Woovee (talk) 18:55, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In these edits I'm simply following my typical practice of referencing an album's Metacritic score using the album's primary page on Metacritic (this is the default page that one is redirected to when searching for an album or clicking on an album on an artist's page on the Metacritic site); this is primarily on the basis that I've observed this to be the norm for most album articles I've come across over the years (in fact, this is even followed on the documentation page for the album ratings template itself), and hence I didn't think this would be particularly contentious. I've certainly never done this with the intent of balancing professional reviews with user reviews—which I'm very much aware aren't reputable for referencing, per WP:USERG among other policies—as seems to be insinuated here (and I'm not understanding why that's being insinuated to begin with—in none of these edits am I adding any mentions of Metacritic user reviews or ratings to the body of an article). If your personal stylistic preference as an editor is to cite the "Critic Reviews" sub-page accessible from an album's primary page instead of the primary page itself, then I don't really mind—the Metacritic score is mentioned on both pages so either would work. But I've seen no guideline or formal discussion to indicate that the mere presence of user reviews or ratings—which, again, aren't even being added or alluded to in the concerned articles in the first place—is enough to make an entire page of otherwise professionally generated content unacceptable for use as a reference; otherwise, reputable sources such as AllMusic review pages or archived review pages from the old Rolling Stone website, both of which have sections for user reviews and ratings, would likewise be deemed unacceptable to cite. Adding "opinions of fans" to articles is against site guidelines, true; I fail to see how citing a Metacritic page for the sole purpose of verifying a Metacritic critic aggregate score is tantamount to that at all. Access to sources[edit]

Hi, just had a quick question for you... I notice you've been changing things like review titles to those actually used in the NME and the like at the time (something I should have done when I added many of those reviews in the first place, but I was new to Wikipedia and still learning the ropes). So obviously you have access to those original sources, and I wondered where you were getting them from – the British Library (I'm a member, so that's where I got them from), or do you have access to some online source with scans of all these old music magazines? Richard3120 (talk) 22:53, 18 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, there – while I don't have access to a source that hosts archives of all the old UK publications in one place, I've managed to cite from articles in these publications via different online sources – particularly the World Radio History website (which has archived issues of Record Mirror, among other publications) and Flickr (where quite a number of old issues of Record Mirror, NME [issues from the 1980s, at least], and the like can be found). That's not entirely comprehensive (in certain cases I've had to trawl through more niche sources like fansites to find old articles), but I've definitely found those two sources especially helpful. Cheers, Holiday56 (talk) 07:05, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's interesting – I'm familiar with World Radio History and its extensive Record Mirror collection, of course, and there are a couple of almost complete Smash Hits archives online as well. But I didn't realise NME and others were available on Flickr... I'll have to look into that. Thanks for replying. Richard3120 (talk) 15:26, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removing reviews[edit]

Good day! I noticed and was unpleasantly surprised that you removed the several reviews I added and replace it by yours. I think that it would be more polite and respectful to my contribution to transfer excerpts from the reviews to the text of the articles than simply delete it.

Incomplete list of articles:

Hi – this is noted. Just for some explanation, when making my edits I had MOS:ALBUM in mind – which recommends a limit of ten review sources in the ratings box, and also notes that one should consider the notability of a review source when selecting sources to use (in that sense, prominent music publications like Mojo, NME, Q, and Uncut – all of which have much third-party coverage to establish their notability, as well as a history of numerous notable contributors – struck me as more notable than Hi-Fi News & Record Review, which by comparison seems to have attracted far less independent coverage [also, outside of MOS:ALBUM, I additionally took into consideration that its non-standard <letter><*>:<number><*> rating system would likely be difficult for the average reader to readily comprehend, compared to a more conventional system that uses letters, numbers, or stars in a simple manner]). I certainly didn't mean any disrespect, and if any was perceived, my apologies. On incorporating review excerpts into the prose instead: assuming they can be adequately worked into the prose, that sounds reasonable; I'll keep such an approach in mind to consider in the future. All the best, Holiday56 (talk) 15:30, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, apology accepted. I restored my deleted reviews in prose. Vasyatka1 (talk) 11:37, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
