Zelda Popkin

Before you made your comment, it was my impression that she had been largely forgotten -- there haven't been any new editions of her books for decades, and that was my rule of thumb. But then I read the entry under her name and started to reconsider; she was better-known than I'd thought. If you want to change this reference, let me know, or just change it to what you want it to read, and I'll find another name to substitute if necessary. defaultsort vs lifetime

Instead of using defaultsort for articles on people could you use {{Lifetime}}? Defaultsort should only be used for articles not on people. For An Angel (talk) 12:34, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

You removed my picture and replaced with a zoomed out view of the first edition. However, I think the one that I orginally had in their was more aestethetically pleasing. The point being that it is the more literary significance that is the focus. We are not here to entertain but to inform and educate. In the literary world the first appearance of a work is "nearly always" the most significant. I know not much thanks is issued around here - but I would like to send my appreciation of your work in providing 1st edition cover for books and novels. Saint covers

Good work on the Saint covers. I don't know if you have admin privileges or not, but if you do you have permission to delete any images I've uploaded that you replace with first editions (it saves me getting bot messages like those above!). Unfortunately I'm having problems using the existing filename as evidence Image:HappyHighwayman.jpg, I added a new Summary (present in comment bit at bottom) but it hasn't updated the Summary ! I saw your message on User talk:Kevinalewis. The book is published in 1899, therefore it should be quite easy to get a public domain image of the book. There is no need for a non-free content image, hence it is replaceable non-free content. Garion96 (talk) 19:03, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

I did search the Internet for a first edition and found this image (resurrection.jpg)! For the War and Peace article someone scanned it in themselves (presumably at a "library with old books") ! As the Resurrection was first published earlier than 1st January 1923 then why can't Garion96 change it like they did to A Little Tour in France image and add a Public Domain tag? What is to stop somebody me getting a copy from somewhere unspecified and using the same rationale as Kilmeny of the Orchard image ? I am confusedGrahamHardy (talk) 18:36, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

That is because the edition of this bookcover is unknown. Plus the image has creativity. The way the book is set, the light etc. The other image you mentioned at File:LittleTourInFrance.JPG has no creativity so always is in the public domain (provided of course the bookcover itself is public domain, which it is). Hippos

Sorry for the late response, wasn't online much lately. Regarding flat images. Basically yes, when there is no creativity, basically a scan, there is no new copyright. That was the reason the Age of Innocense image was deleted. Regarding the other images, AnneOfAvonlea.jpg and AnneOfTheIslandCover.jpg. They were originally tagged as fair use (non-free content). Old Georgians category

Thoguh I'm a KGV Old Georgian myself, I think we might be being a bit presumptious in claiming Category:Old Georgians for ourselves. St George's College, Weybridge also usese the same term for its alumni, and it's quite probable that some fo the other St George's Colleges do too. I'm flattered you regard me as an experienced editor; My experience is wide rather than deep; lots of 1st edition book covers uploaded and a few book articles started - I'm reading books obsessively at the moment - and if they haven't got an article I start one. Re your specific question I suspect it isn't allowed, see Wikipedia:Non-free content#Unacceptable use, which includes as an example under images, A magazine or book cover, to illustrate the article on the person whose photograph is on the cover. Searching Google images I now see that the National Portait Gallery has seven images of Davies [1] and it may be possible for me to request a licence to use one of these in the article. Anna Wintour ... Old Queen?

I know she's claimed as an alumna in the Queen's College article, but do you have a source for this? (It doesn't, and this article is ten years old, and has some other errors.). Because I pretty thoroughly researched her, and Jerry Oppenheimer's unauthorized biography, the only decent source for her early life, is pretty explicit that she attended only North London Collegiate and went to work in fashion before she was even twenty. I have come across nothing suggesting she went to Queen's (she worked at Harper's & Queen briefly, which may have caused the confusion). Daniel Case (talk) 16:34, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Howdy. Regarding the section order at Anthropology: And a Hundred Other Stories, the recommended order, per WP:LAYOUT, is for external links to be the very last section (see Wikipedia:LAYOUT#External_links in particular). This is the standard throughout Wikipedia. (However, I'll leave it up to you until the article starts getting peer reviewed or FAR or somesuch.) List of rail accidents in the United Kingdom

I see that you've been putting a lot of refs into List of rail accidents in the United Kingdom - this is good, but they're not exactly in Wikipedia style per WP:CITESHORT. Also, they don't give terribly much about the actual book itself.

For example, there's the question of edition. You're giving the publication year as 1955, which is that of the first edition; but I've never seen one of those in the wild; most copies in libraries or available secondhand are second or third editions (1966 and 1976). There is also a fourth (1982) edition, which seems rare: but I just happen to have owned one since about 1984. The 3rd and 4th were published after Rolt's death, and have revisions and additional material by Geoffrey Kichenside. Kichenside later wrote his own book on railway accidents, some parts of which were based on the material that he'd provided for the 3rd and 4th editions of "Red for Danger". His text was later removed from RfD, so virtually all copies sold new since the early 1990s (including the current June 2009 printing, ISBN 978 0 7524 5106 0) are essentially the second edition.

I'd like to amend the refs, so that they will show more detail about the book yet won't take up much more space. I've already done that to South Croydon rail crash, but with only one reference per book, it's not too clear what I mean. You can see an example of the style that I'd like to use in Hinksey Halt railway station, where some books have several cited refs. If you suggest a section within List of rail accidents in the United Kingdom for me to have a bash at, I'll amend it along those lines, and then you can see what you think. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:27, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

I added a "Sources" section too, which lists each of the (three) texts that I consulted. You'll notice that if you click where it says "Rolt & Kichenside" in the "References" section, then the browser moves to the relevant row in the "Sources" section. Page 248 - that would be Norton Fitzwarren 1940. Anyway, a small point: when using the {{sfn}} template, the last parameter should only be |p= when a single page is referenced. For multiple pages, use |pp=, for example |pp=248-251. You can also reference something that has not got a page number, such as the photos between pages 164 & 165, for which you can use |loc= instead. You can have only one of these three parameter types per {{sfn}}, and if there are more than one, |loc= takes precedence over |p= which takes precedence over |pp=. For example, for Welwyn 1935 you might want to have two {{sfn}}, one with |pp=220-223 and the other could have either |loc=fig. 8(a) or |loc=plate 8(a). --Redrose64 (talk) 19:21, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

W&P Rly Opening Date (your Category change)

It is probably a moot point but the W&P opened for business, albeit over 6 miles only, in 1835 (as per the original category entry) although it opened its complete line in 1836 (as per your change) but which is correct as a Wiki Category? XTOV (talk) 20:30, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Good question; as both Whitby and Pickering are included in the article title, and the Railway name, so I thought that we'd better use the date when both were connected. Its more difficult when the name is just "North Railshire line" for example and was opened in stages; do you use the date the first bit was opened, or the last bit, or the biggest bit? But as I said earlier as both Whitby & Pickering were mentioned I decided to use the date they were linked... Hi Graham. You seem to have got the category bug big time! I know from experience that this can lead to large numbers of edits in a short period. Were you aware of the 'HotCat' tool? You may find that it speeds up your categorising (unless you are applying multiple categories.) It allows you to add, remove or replace categories without opening the page for editing. It also does an automatic edit summary (which is useful for other editors, since they can see that it is a HotCat edit and, probably, ignore it). HotCat is available from 'my preferences-->Gadgets-->Editing gadgets'.

Addition of Categories for Station opening and closing dates

I support your addition of these categories but in some cases, for stations whose history I am familiar with, your changes are somewhat misleading or even confusing. Specifically listing Grosmont as opening in 1865 could be said to be wrong since only the Esk Valley line platform was opened on that date. The original station at Grosmont opened under the name Tunnel in 1835, this station was rebuilt and given two platforms and reopened in 1847, now named Grosmont since the village of that name had developed around the original station.

The dates for Beckhole are even more complicated, originally officially opened in 1836 (although it may have been in use during the previous year), it closed to passengers only in 1865, becoming a terminus station at the same time. It reopened to passengers in 1908 closing to passengers on the outbreak of WW1 in 1914 but it remained open for goods for some time, losing that service at some so far unrecorded date as the branch serving it was gradually truncated as the individual private sidings it served were closed, the last fragment of the branch was closed in the early 1950's.

Re Grosmont railway station; I remember being uncertain at the time what date to use and plumped for that in the Infobox ! I remember being uncertain whether the name 'Tunnel' referred to the town or the station. I guess thinking about it this referred to the station ! I have therefore corrected the Category to 1836 - I have also corrected it in the Infobox.

Re Beckhole railway station; all I had to go on is the article itself which makes no mention of 1836; hence I could not use that; I could I guess have added Closed in 1865 category but I didn't, never mind I have added it now - If you can include a referenced statement to Beckhole station opening in 1836 then I'll (or you) can add the category !

Re this edit - it creates invalid HTML if you use the same value for the name= in more than one <ref name=value>some text</ref> style reference. Instead, use it only once (I suggest leaving it on the Ratho accident, seeing as it was already there), and the following should be used for the second and subsequent cases: <ref name=value />. I have fixed it up: see here for my fixes; and the combination of yours and mine is here.

You are mixing two different places up. Canada has 10 provinces, one of which is Quebec, and 3 territories, one of which is Nunavut. MSC and ship prefixes

I noticed you had defaultsorted some ships owned by MSC so that they're not listed under M. You should know that MSC in these cases is not a ship prefix like MS, but the abbreviation of the company name (Mediterranean Shipping Company). Therefore similarly as Carnival Fantasy is sorted by it's full name and not as "Fantasy", MSC Fantasia should be sorted as "MSC Fantasia" and not "Fantasia". Harmon Hotel

Noticed that you tagged this as being established in 2006. How can a hotel be established, which tends to mean open, when it still has not been finished? I suggest that you limit the hotels established category to when they were actually opened like all of the other established in categories. If you are trying to use the Category:yyyy architecture categories I advise extreme caution since those contents need cleaning up. Book covers not showing up on the pages you are adding them to

Hi Graham. Thanks for uploading book cover images to Wikipedia. Unfortunately, none of the cover images you have added to articles are showing up in those articles because you have not followed the template precisely. Please note that the infobox template for books requires that the format for images conform exactly to this style: [[Image:FirstPageGreenGables.gif|200px|Cover]]. That is, there must be a descriptor word or phrase at the end, after an "|" character. Without that, the image will not show up on Wikipedia.

Could you please go back and correct all of the images you have uploaded, so that they will appear in the infoboxes? Right now, all that appears is a large empty space and a non-existent image character. Lastly, please remember to check "Show preview" on any page you edit on Wikipedia before you click "Save page". I did do preview; and noticed the problem but thought it was my slow browser. I can see nothing wrong with the syntax:

• A Man in Full has [[Image:Tommywolfie.jpg|200px]] and displays OK.
• Take a Girl Like You has [[File:TakeAGirlLikeYou.jpg|200px]] and does not.

Book covers re: Stephen Crane

Hi GrahamHardy, I noticed that you recently uploaded book covers of several Stephen Crane works, including ones for The Red Badge of Courage, The Open Boat, and others. For the time being, I've removed the covers to these two works for several reasons. First, the latter is an FA and the other is currently at FAC, so the presence of any Fair-Use image may prove problematic. Second, your source (to AbeBooks) is not conclusive, mainly because the site is user-generated. Unless I'm wrong? Can you prove that these images are in fact the first US editions? I believe this to be the case for the Red Badge cover, but the Open Boat cover seems odd, especially since it doesn't include the full, original title of the work. Another issue is that you've tagged these works as being Fair-Use when, if they are in fact first edition publications, they would be in the public domain in the US because they pre-date 1923. I have changed the liscensing on File:TheOpenBoat.jpg and amended the source website to http://www.betweenthecovers.com/btc/item/95814/ if you check the source they provide more information, does that help ? Abebooks shows several first edition covers, both UK and US; all of which are just inscribed "The Open Boat"... also looking at the title page http://www.archive.org/stream/openboatothertal00cranuoft#page/n5/mode/2up indicates that the 'And Other Tales Of Adventure' was an adjunct to the main title... Thanks so much! Along with the sources you've provided, I've also researched Will H. Bradley's work and found that he did illustrate the 1898 edition, so I agree it's most probably the first edition cover. Schiedam train disaster

I made a draft article about the train disaster in Schiedam, which you had earlier made a draft about and I used some info from your draft. See User:SpeakFree/Schiedam train disaster. If you have anything to contribute, please feel welcome to do so. I also created the article nl:Treinramp bij Schiedam on Dutch Wikipedia. BTW I live very near to the location where it happened so I might take a picture of the surroundings once I figure out where it exactly happened (I have a general idea based on the NOS video but all the buildings in it aren't there anymore AFAIKS), maybe a panorama like on Harmelen train disaster.
