Notable Hoax Retrieval

I found a fairly clever hoax article that was on Wikipedia for a full month (from March to April of 2005) without being deleted. As such, it qualifies as a notable hoax, much like European Toilet Paper Holder. However, I do not know how to retrieve this article and preserve it for Wikipedia hoax records. Could you help me? It's British Crown copyright and is tagged as such. What makes you doubt it? It's the London Underground. SlimVirgin (talk) 21:06, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

If it's not in an article, it should be deleted anyway, so I've done it. However, I feel you've misunderstood the copyright situation, although, of course, it may be my misunderstanding, because I'm not very up on this. The copyright is owned by the British government. They say anyone may use it so long as the use is appropriate (I forget the exact wording) and they are acknowledged as the copyright holders. Which website you find it on is therefore surely irrelevant. SlimVirgin (talk) 00:52, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Erm...

Please read image pages more carefully before tagging them with threatened deletion. If you had read the notice on the page, you would have noticed the words This is a photograph of a member of the Parliament of Australia from AUSPIC, the official government source, and is held under Australian Crown copyright. Yes, i realised that it requires attribution, but i meant to ask someone if they'd be able to recreate the graph using newer values in say, openoffice or koffice, so then we can release it into the public domain with no problems. The magical Spum-dandy 07:56, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Macaulay Culkin

Why did you change the photo in the Macaulay Culkin article? The mug shot photo is a very unflattering image of him. He's famous for being an actor, not a criminal. To place in the mug shot photo is like defining his whole life on this one mistake he committed last year. It's not correct to do that. Furthermore, the other image was a publicity photo. It is a fair use image. However, I do realize the link doesn't work anymore so I took it off as well as the mug shot you put in. TripleH1976 12:30 a.m., 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Use of NHS image

Hi. I noticed that you corrected my use of a "fair use image" in the Template:User NHS nurse, Template:User NHS project and Template:User UK paramedic. Thanks for fixing them as I wasn't aware of the problem. The same image is used in the Template:Infobox NHS hospital and Template:NHS-stub. Should it be changed in them as well or do they count as fair use? Thanks. Road Wizard 11:42, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Leeds General Infirmary.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Leeds General Infirmary.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Article & User Page

Hello GeeJo, I would like to thank you for the contribution to the 'Carl Humann' article and the image you uploaded. I started that article weeks ago, but haven't found the time to expand it due to the always-hectic university stress. Two more weeks, and a summer of contributions and hobbies await. I promise to expand that article and contribute to the amazing Wikipedia Community. On another note: I wanted to congratulate you on your great User Page. I haven't found the time to develop mine, as a means of communicating with fellow Wikinauts. On that subject, did you use an available template for your site, or did you write the codes yourself? Any tips, will be greatly appreciated! Again, thank you for the contribution on the article, in order to keep this great community going!

CROWN COPYRIGHT

Hi There

You left a message regarding an image I have uploaded "In The Valley All Was Still" . You are right, I just wanted to show that I was the author(Artist ) of the piece and wanted to show it was generally copyrighted. Not being an expert on such things I obviously added the wrong copyright notice to it trying to find some sort of general UK copyright notification - I then couldn't find how or where to change what I had done. Can you correct this error for me? would be grateful

Thanks

hi i was wondering why you allow vandalism on your user page? also how did you get all that stuff on there - Rob

Howdy! Since you're on an IP account, I'll answer here as well as on your talk page to make sure you can read this. In response to your question, I've stuck the vandalism box on my page mostly for fun. I suppose I could have called it a guestbook, since it serves the same kind of purpose. As to all the stuff on there, i've bult it up slowly by swiping nice pieces from other people's User pages. If you want a user page of your own, you'll need to register an account. If you've any other questions, feel free to drop me a note on my talk page. Happy editing! GeeJo (t)(c) • 22:10, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Alexandra of greece 2.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 22:08, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Stub sorting

When you are sorting articles into the new UK occupation stubs, please be careful about removing other valid stubs. I note that you removed {{Scotland-bio-stub}} from the Moira Anderson article. This is not appropriate, because {{UK-singer-stub}} does not feed into a subcat of Category:Scottish people stubs.

If however you had been sorting articles into {{Scotland-politician-stub}}, then you would of course remove the superstub.

Have you been doing this on a regular basis, or was that just a slip up? --Mais oui! 12:23, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Featured Pictures, your question

Hello GeeJo,

Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. Although I am not providing you direct help in form of edited picture, I will try to address some of your questions. However, please note that I have been in this project as a contributor just for a few months, wherefore "older hands" may have somewhat different views of things that I do.

I think that first of all you should just read the guidelines for FP.

An issue I addressed in my comment, was resolution of the picture. As you can see from day old modification in "requirements", this is a requirement that is getting higher all the time. For this criteria, and it is a criteria for nominators, the minimum requirement is 2000px and the higher the better. You would do well to follow this and other requirements set for nominators.

Another issue you have in the nominated picture, are the seriously blown highlights - for no reason. And I say "for reason", because there is no reason. The original image is not "blown". You could have easily provided (if you had access to original) an image without blown highlights. This is something that usually gets negative attention. You should try to avoid it, if you can. Although not an obstacle for FP, you are bound to get some "oppose" votes on this basis alone. Try to avoid it.

In addition, there are the quality guidelines, which I think should be followed. Important aspects should be sharp, there should not be distracting back or foreground objects and the general quality should be good etc. .

Then it goes to bit more subjective things, where there are no hard guidelines to be followed.

Certainly, the picture should have value, they should contribute something to the project. May well be, but I am affraid that this is still something that has at least a bit of subjectivety attached. Not much, but it certainly is not an objective requirement.

After that we are in the field of pure subjectivety. Something may well be considered "interesting" by some users, beatufil by some and hopeless by others. Obviously, there are no guidelines for this.

Hope that this helps.

And for sake of order, if we could continue this discussion in this page.

Thermos 17:58, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Alrighty, continuing here. In response, I'd like to point out that I didn't have access to the original image at the time I posted the first one, and also wasn't the one to create the cropped version — just follow the link to Jurvetson's Flickr account that's available on the image description page to see exactly where I got it. Hence my comment lower down about contacting the source. You also seem to be misinterpreting my comment on your page. I wasn't saying that I was unaware or inexperienced with the FPC guidelines, rather that I wasn't that experienced with image editing tools such as Photoshop, and so couldn't really help in terms of bringing the image up to scratch myself. Thirdly, you seem to be mostly commenting on the first picture uploaded. What are your opinions on the second? Its resolution is certainly higher, and the highlights are no longer blown. In your opinion, does this image now sufficiently satisfy the FPC guidelines, and if not, how can it be improved? Awating your response. GeeJo (t)(c) • 02:06, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello GeeJo
First of all, sorry for being so inaccurate about your question. I kind of rushed my response. In addition, it was not my intent of being patronising, obviously did too much of that too.
For second upload, In my opinion, it can be made better by leaving "breathing space" as per my original comment.
I tried various crops of the full sized image with "breathing base". I was most satisfied about the crops where the whiteish dish in backgroung was cropped off alltogether, leaving the entire background of black ferrofluid brown. However, with those crops I could manage an image resolution of 1391 x 920 px, which I am affraid, is still not sufficent.
If you thing it beneficial, I think you should try something among those lines.
About uploading crops, I have a principle that I do not upload anything at all, which I have not created myself. Not even modifications of other peoples pictures. Sorry for that and if my comment created you too much trouble, but I tried to be constructive. --Thermos 05:39, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
No problems, my response did sound a bit acerbic, and probably could have done with a few smilies :). It seems we have somewhat different aims — Aside from a number of chemical structural formulae I created for Wikiproject Drugs, I've only uploaded a single self-created image. I tend to just hang around Flickr and a few Public Domain image sources and look for encyclopedia articles that'd benefit from what I find. From the looks of it, the Ferrofluid image is going to just lose out to becoming a featured picture. I suppose it'd have made a lot more sense to try to get it featured on Wikipedia; the resolution requirements are lower and it serves a lot better as an illustration of the article than as a standalone image. In any case, I do appreciate your trying to help, and it was mostly your comment that made me seek out the source in search of the original image. Once the FPC process has ended, I'll probably replace the original upload with a crop of the source image to remove some of the blown highlights you pointed out. GeeJo (t)(c) • 06:06, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
You are welcome, no damage done. This is just a good example how much of information is passed through gestures and such - written words can create misunderstandings. I agree with you that it would probaply be better to try to get it featured in Wikipedia. In any case, it is good to get more images. For me, for example, before your upload, I honestly did not know what ferrofluid is or what it would look like. Take care --Thermos 14:19, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
Well, I just checked this page before checking nominations. The version you uploaded is very close to what I imagined the picture could be made. You have my support. --Thermos 14:34, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

the reason why i posted it here was because i needed to ask an experienced wikipedian about this for their opinion. ok i think i might agree with you that it is a bad idea but for a different reason. i realised that there are enough places to find lyrics on the web, some websites offering almost comprehensive lists, that a wiki on lyrics would just be a useless effort.
