Common law

You reverted five edits, and say that "one or more of your recent contributions" does "not appear constructive." Could you be a little more specific? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.169.56.27 (talk) 21:23, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

You're adding unsourced content and excessive links that link to different sections of the article. Please see WP:RS and MOS:OVERLINK. FuriouslySerene (talk) 17:45, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
I'll need a little more explanation. 1. Can you identify specific instances of "excessive links" that are excessive against this advice from the MOS and facts specific to this article --
  • Do use a link wherever appropriate, but as far as possible do not force a reader to use that link to understand the sentence.MOS:LINKSTYLE
  • "A good question to ask yourself is whether reading the article you're about to link to would help someone understand the article you are linking from." MOS:OVERLINK
  • Do not link to pages that redirect back to the page the link is on (unless the link is to a redirect with possibilities that links to an appropriate section of the current article). MOS:OVERLINK
  • "Other examples of permissible self-references of this sort include disambiguation links..." [1]
  • Articles on technical subjects might demand a higher density of links than general-interest articles, because they are likely to contain more technical terms that general dictionaries are unlikely to explain in context.MOS:OVERLINK
  • Certain facts relevant to a common topic were spread around the article in several places, for example observations about Canada and India. I consolidated them in one place, and linked them at the old location -- they're relevant at the old location, and the links "would help someone understand the article you are linking from." Seems like exactly the kind of thing that links are for, true?
The closest thing seems to be this:
  • Refrain from implementing colored links that may impede user ability to distinguish links from regular text, or color links for purely aesthetic reasons.
But there are no "colored links."
2. Can you identify specific instance of "unsourced content", and explain why a revert is a more appropriate remedy than a "citation needed" tag? I note that the principle is not "unsourced," but rather "The prohibition against OR means that all material added to articles must be attributable to a reliable, published source, even if not actually attributed." WP:NOR If simply replicating a footnote is the issue, that's easy enough, if you give specific indications.
A non-specific comment, removal citations to other places that *do* give more specific explanations and then complaining about "unsourcing," and big reverts of material that (as far as I know) meets the Manual "does not appear constructive." WP:AGF It's very hard to treat a condition with no diagnosis.
50.169.56.27 (talk) 23:50, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
See MOS:DUPLINK: "Generally, a link should appear only once in an article." You're adding links to the same page over a dozen times, which does not help a reader's understanding of the page. I'm not aware of a single other WP article that uses dozens of links to different sections of the same page. The reason is that it's confusing and doesn't read well. The other issue is that the use of "three connotations" is not supported by reliable sources. No reliable source says that common law has three connotations or uses that terminology. See WP:SYNTH for more on impermissible uses of original research. Furthermore, as for the unsourced content you added, see WP:V: "All quotations, and any material whose verifiability has been challenged or is likely to be challenged, must include an inline citation that directly supports the material. Any material that needs a source but does not have one may be removed." You need to provide a reliable source for the content you are adding, or it will be removed. Canadian Judicial Council

Early retirement is not the same as resignation under the Judges Act. A justice who resigns is not necessarily eligible for annuities (with certain exceptions as stipulated in the Act), and they are not eligible to be appointed as a deputy judge in the future. The source cited prior to my edit also clearly used the words "retirement" and "stayed". Also, the inquiry already began (and hence the panel accepted her early retirement offer). As such, "Resigned before inquiry began" is factually incorrect.--Cahk (talk) 11:08, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Cahk I see you've included the secondary source this time from the Winnipeg Sun, and added a wikilink, which I think is an improvement. You are also right that the inquiry did begin, so you've made a good correction to the outcome column. However, you'll note the other column is titled "Committee recommendation." The committee did not recommend "staying" the decision (the committee did not make the deal or render a decision) so I think it may be inaccurate. In the future, I think you can post this sort of comment to the talk page of the article, as others might want to offer their opinion as well. FuriouslySerene (talk) 17:47, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi FuriouslySerene,

In this edit motivated by Wikipedia:No original research it says that:

COMER was co-founded by William Krehm, a Trotskyist and Toronto resident

While the mention of being a Toronto resident would be relevant, why was it necessary to bring up the ideological background of this person since the organisation is most probably not political? --JamesPoulson (talk) 17:21, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

You don't think the political views of the founder of a political organization are relevant to a page on the organization? The Toronto Star clearly disagrees, since Trotsky is mentioned 11 times in an article about him. FuriouslySerene (talk) 20:28, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Weight in umpire articles

Hi FurioslySerene. I have made an argument at Talk:Chris Conroy as to why I believe WP:undue applies to umpire articles. The argument will be similar at Vic Carapazza and Phil Cuzzi, but I thought I would start at that article first instead of spreading the discussion across multiple forums. I am planning on going through all the umpire biographies and making them more due, so ideally I would like to convince you that my approach and reasoning is supported by the policies and guidelines. Contrary to what might be perceived I am not trying to remove all criticism from sports officials articles. If you think a particular incident occurs that is notable enough to include in an umpires bio then I am more than willing to be persuaded to add, defend and even expand on it. AIRcorn (talk) 04:35, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Would it suit you if I open an RFC about this now, or would you rather wait until after the New Year? AIRcorn (talk) 03:38, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
I have written a draft question at User:Aircorn/Sandbox/Baseball umpire RFC. Feel free to comment there or here on it. I will also drop a note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball linking there. AIRcorn (talk) 08:41, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Kevin O'Leary

He has entered the leadership race officially now. So the sentence about him considering entering the race is outdated. Also, he's middle-eastern (half Lebanese half Irish) so the Trump comparisons are pretty far-fetched. In fairness, we need to include his response to these comparisons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.64.241.27 (talk) 03:31, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Yosef Yitzchok Lerner

The article Yosef Yitzchok Lerner has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No assertion of notability, and no reliable sources provided. Unable to find any further reliable sources that could be added. Fails WP:GNG and WP:BIO.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I have left this message because you are one of the few editors with multiple edits to Yosef Yitzchok Lerner. TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:21, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Comment on Gross National Happiness Article

Hi FS, regarding deleting the milestones section, you have good point about editors should not make the connection, the original sources should.

I'm including the following references for your consideration.

The source articles making the connection between their initiatives and the gross national happiness philosophy

Bhutan Local GNH Index http://www.ophi.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Ura-et-al-Bhutan-Happiness-Chapter.pdf

International Institute of Management's Global GNH Index https://www.iim-edu.org/grossnationalhappiness/

Thailand GNH http://thainews.prd.go.th/website_en/news/news_detail/WNPOL5910120010021

Dubai Ministry of Happiness https://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/10/world/middleeast/emirates-want-to-top-the-world-in-happiness-too.html?_r=0

So, can you please undo the delete and keep the content related to the above milestones. I will research the other connections and update them one by one. If no connection is found, no new entries will be made. I'm relatively new to Wikipedia, and I hope you can hold my hand with the new edits.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.90.13.192 (talk) 11:40, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

First off, I suggest making an account. It's much easier to edit. Second, you should post these comments on the talk page of GNH, not here. That way all editors to the topic can see your comments and can discuss what should be included. I agree that some of the stuff deleted can probably be restored. I think you should post a comment there explaining what you think belongs and I can help out as well. FuriouslySerene (talk) 01:35, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks FuriouslySerene, yes please, I do need your help. can you please include links to how to create an account. No problem, happy to help. Wikipedia can be a bit confusing for beginners. First, go here and create an account: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:CreateAccount. When you're done, go to this site: Wikipedia:Tutorial. That will give you the basics of editing. There are a ton of other resources, such as this: Wikipedia:GLAM/Beginner's guide to Wikipedia. If you have any other questions, feel free to post here and I'll try to help. Welcome! FuriouslySerene (talk) 07:15, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

After providing solid and reliable sources for my editing of Value Partners (asset management), i was wondering why all the changes was rejected so far... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vpmarcom (talkcontribs) 09:39, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Follow up on Value Partners (asset management)

Morning. You said "There's nothing wrong with adding content and sources. and one of the bigger problems with your edits is that you removed sourced content, without a valid reason. "

For example, the CEO of Value Partners had already been changed to Dr. AU King Lun in Jan 2017, and I already provided the related link. Can you tell me why this kind of "old and inaccurate content" cannot be removed?

Other changes I made includes the updated title of the chairman and the latest AUM of the group. Each changes was attached with official announcement files. For these changes, I don't think it will be appropriate to keep the old and wrong fact, and reject the latest truth. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vpmarcom (talkcontribs) 01:58, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

I think you're deliberately ignoring what I said about conflict of interest issues and removal of sourced content. I would suggest you post your proposed changes here Talk:Value Partners (asset management) for discussion, and they can then be added. Also please remember to sign your comments with four tildes (~). Please do not remove sourced content without first discussing on the talk page. FuriouslySerene (talk) 02:42, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Kevin O'Leary

I removed the part about "other politicians". The article currently does not have sources which back up this claim. However, many of the changes you inadvertently reinserted have faced harsh backlash on the talk page.

Since January 30th, 2017, Korny has been trying to edit-war in content on the Kevin O'Leary WP page. While many other users have simply been reverting these changes and/or objecting to them on the talk page, I have been editing out the more objectionable content in the hopes of reaching a compromise.

Specifically, this user has:

1) Inserted POV language describing both Trump and O'Leary as having the same "brash opinionated style". This is an opinion, not a fact. This unflattering language is written in a POV way, and violates the Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons policy. Many of the sources also claim the opposite is true, and argue that they have very different styles and personalities. 2) Inserted that they both have the same "right wing platforms" (February 16th), which this user then changed to the same "tax and regulations" platforms (sources don't mention regulations). It is unclear which taxes and regulations are being discussed. Regardless, other sources describe their economic policies as very different. 3) Unexplained removal of the well-sourced O'Leary quote in response to this comparison. This was perhaps the most important part of the original article as it provides a fair response. 4) The "Praising Trump, smart as a fox" sentence is unclear which policy O'Leary is allegedly talking about. By itself it is very misleading, and overall unnecessary. Numerous users have also objected to this on the talk page.

Please comment on these changes made by Korny on the talk page. Alternatively, consider editing the paragraph fixing the issues listed above as well as any other issues you have with the article. MohammedMohammedمحمد 17:17, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

Hey MohammedMohammed. Thanks for the message. I reverted the edit because it appeared that you added unsourced content, including the "other politicians" thing. I didn't mean to endorse the current version, just simply per WP:V unsourced content shouldn't be added to page without an inline cite. The issues you've cited certainly sound like they need to be dealt with. However, I see you've since re-added the "superficial similarities" line, which I also tried to remove. The line must be cited to a source, and not stated as a fact. Take a look at WP:WORDS for more on this issue. FuriouslySerene (talk) 22:47, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Nazarian family

Hi FuriouslySerene.

I am reaching out to you because you were the editor that nominated the Nazarian family Wikipedia page for AfD. About a week after that AfD closed, another IP added two people from the Nazarian family as co-founders of Qualcomm in the infobox here. A quick Google search suggests they were early investors, not founders. I am affiliated with Qualcomm, and so WP:COI prohibits me from making the correction myself. I was hoping you would take a look and revert if you feel appropriate.

CorporateM (Talk) 18:51, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

It looks like the Izak Parviz Nazarian page also incorrectly identifies him as a Qualcomm co-founder. CorporateM (Talk) 22:20, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, I agree I don't see any sourcing for the claim, so I've reverted. In the future, you might want to post a comment on the talk page of the relevant article, as that might be more efficient for you. FuriouslySerene (talk) 00:34, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

There's no requirement to "be consistent" when removing unsourced content (you can remove other content if you think there's no source for it either). There is a requirement in Wikipedia policy to not add or restore content that is unsourced without an inline citation, under WP:UNSOURCED. I've linked to that many times when posting warnings to your page, which you have chosen to ignore for some reason. FuriouslySerene (talk) 20:57, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

VisualEditor
Did you know?

Did you know that you can review your changes visually?

Screenshot showing some changes to an article. Most changes are highlighted with text formatting.
When you are finished editing the page, type your edit summary and then choose "Review your changes".

In visual mode, you will see additions, removals, new links, and formatting highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Toggle button showing visual and wikitext options; visual option is selected.

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

Screenshot showing the same changes, in the two-column wikitext diff display.

The wikitext diff is the same diff tool that is used in the wikitext editors and in the page history.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.

A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [2]

The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [3]

Other changes:

  • You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [4]
  • The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [5]
  • The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the "hamburger" icon) for quicker access. [6] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [7]
  • You can now create <chem> tags (sometimes used as <ce>) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [8]
  • Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [9]
  • The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [10]
  • A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [11]
  • There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K on a PC or Command+K on a Mac. [12]

Future changes

  • The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [13]
  • The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding &ooui=1 to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. [14]
  • The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [15]

Article Update and Request for Comment

Hi FuriouslySerene,In my first discussion with you about GNH page (Section Non-GNH Measures) at Talk:Gross_National_Happiness

I wrote my response to your comment and argued that the content was not original and provided evidence. Please see your talk page User_talk:FuriouslySerene/Archive_7

You agreed with my point and wrote that the content can be restored and you asked me to post my comments on the talk page. Being a Wikipedia beginner, I thought the post to your talk page was sufficient. few days back, I did respond on the talk page of the article. Another contributor with ID: Toddst1, used your initial comment as consensus to his argument to delete the text again and again. When I restored it, he threatened me with vandalism and blocking on my talk page, which I feel is unfair, especially, considering that he is the one deleting legit content, not me. In fact he is deleting the cited text based on his opinion without supporting evidence, I could argue that he is the one vandalizing. Can he bully new users this way? Can I post the same warnings to his talk page? I do not want to engage in a war with him, but if he has the right to delete my text because he has different opinion but no supporting evidence, why can't I post the same warning to his talk page! Can you please help correct the misunderstanding, and add the relevant text in the talk page back to the article and maybe help resolve this issue amicably? Or guide me to an article on how to handle unfair editing and bullying on Wikipedia? What is the use of creating an account and spending time and effort to contribute to Wikipedia, if anyone can delete it with impunity!. 91.90.13.192 (talk) 15:07, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, FuriouslySerene. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Formal mediation has been requested

The Mediation Committee has received a request for formal mediation of the dispute relating to "Committee on Monetary and Economic Reform". As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. Mediation is a voluntary process which resolves a dispute over article content by facilitation, consensus-building, and compromise among the involved editors. After reviewing the request page, the formal mediation policy, and the guide to formal mediation, please indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Because requests must be responded to by the Mediation Committee within seven days, please respond to the request by 11 December 2017.

Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page. Thank you.
Message delivered by MediationBot (talk) on behalf of the Mediation Committee. 03:44, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Did you know?

Did you know that you can now use the visual diff tool on any page?

Screenshot showing some changes, in the two-column wikitext diff display

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

If you enable the Beta Feature for "⧼visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label⧽", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

Toggle button showing visual and wikitext options; visual option is selected

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

In the visual diff, additions, removals, new links, and formatting changes will be highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Screenshot showing the same changes to an article. Most changes are highlighted with text formatting.

This screenshot shows the same edit as the wikitext diff. The visual diff highlights the removal of one word and the addition of a new sentence. An arrow indicates that the paragraph changed location.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode, which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and improving the visual diff tool. Their work board is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

  • The 2017 wikitext editor is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. The team have been comparing the performance of different editing environments. They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at mw:Contributors/Projects/Editing performance.
  • The visual diff tool was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [16]
  • Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [17]
  • The citoid service automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. Other wikis can have this service, too. Please read the instructions. You can ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki.

Let's work together

  • The team is planning a presentation about editing tools for an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting.
  • Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and other communities may have the visual editor made available by default to contributors. If your community wants this, then please contact Dan Garry.
  • The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. This has already been enabled at the English Wikipedia. If you want columns for a long list of footnotes on this wiki, you can use either <references /> or the plain (no parameters) {{reflist}} template. If you edit a different wiki, you can request multi-column support for your wiki. [18]
  • If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly. We will notify you when the next issue is ready for translation. Thank you!

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, FuriouslySerene. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Did you know that you can use the visual editor on a mobile device?

Every article has a pencil icon at the top. Tap on the pencil icon to start editing.

Edit Cards

Toolbar with menu opened

This is what the new Edit Cards for editing links in the mobile visual editor look like. You can try the prototype here: 📲 Try Edit Cards.

Welcome back to the Editing newsletter.

Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.

Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:

Are you willing to try a new way to add and change links?

If you are interested, we would value your input! You can try this new link tool in the mobile visual editor on a separate wiki.

Follow these instructions and share your experience:

📲 Try Edit Cards.

Recent releases

The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:

  1. Section editing
    • The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
    • The team studied this with an A/B test. This test showed that contributors who could use section editing were 1% more likely to publish the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
  2. Loading overlay
    • The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.

Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.

New and active projects

This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.

  • Edit cards: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. Go here to see how: 📲Try Edit Cards.
  • Mobile toolbar refresh: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
  • Mobile visual editor availability: This A/B test asks: Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor? We are collaborating with 20 Wikipedias to answer this question.
  • Usability improvements: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use.  The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.

Looking ahead

  • Wikimania: Several members of the Editing Team will be attending Wikimania in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the Community Growth space. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
  • Talk Pages: In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin improving talk pages and communication on the wikis.

Learning more

The VisualEditor on mobile is a good place to learn more about the projects we are working on. The team wants to talk with you about anything related to editing. If you have something to say or ask, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Notice

The article Lists of Kinect games has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

None of the links on the page exist anymore. All redirect elsewhere, making this list of lists redundant.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Editing News #2 – Mobile editing and talk pages – October 2019

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this multilingual newsletter

Inside this newsletter, the Editing team talks about their work on the mobile visual editor, on the new talk pages project, and at Wikimania 2019.

Help

What talk page interactions do you remember? Is it a story about how someone helped you to learn something new? Is it a story about how someone helped you get involved in a group? Something else? Whatever your story is, we want to hear it!

Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.

Talk Pages

The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

Mobile visual editor

The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Edit Cards

What happens when you click on a link. The new Edit Card is bigger and has more options for editing links.

Toolbar

The editing toolbar is changing in the mobile visual editor. The old system had two different toolbars. Now, all the buttons are together. Tell the team what you think about the new toolbar.
  • In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
    • One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
    • New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
    • Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
  • Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.

Wikimania

The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.

Looking ahead

  • Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
  • Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.
  • Measuring the impact of Edit Cards: The Editing team hopes to share results in November. This study asks whether the project helped editors add links and citations. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: Edit Cards project page.

This early version of the Reply tool automatically signs and indents comments.

The Editing team has been working on the talk pages project. The goal of the talk pages project is to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. This project is the result of the Talk pages consultation 2019.

Reply tool improved with edit tool buttons
In a future update, the team plans to test a tool for easily linking to another user's name, a rich-text editing option, and other tools.

The team is building a new tool for replying to comments now. This early version can sign and indent comments automatically. Please test the new Reply tool.

  • On 31 March 2020, the new reply tool was offered as a Beta Feature editors at four Wikipedias: Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian. If your community also wants early access to the new tool, contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF).
  • The team is planning some upcoming changes. Please review the proposed design and share your thoughts on the talk page. The team will test features such as:
    • an easy way to mention another editor ("pinging"),
    • a rich-text visual editing option, and
    • other features identified through user testing or recommended by editors.

To hear more about Editing Team updates, please add your name to the "Get involved" section of the project page. You can also watch these pages: the main project page, Updates, Replying, and User testing.

Your subscriptions with the Feedback Request Service

Hi FuriouslySerene! You're receiving this notification because you were previously subscribed to the Feedback Request Service for one or both of the Good Article nomination categories "Arts" and "Everyday life".

You may have noticed that the Feedback Request Service has been inoperative for a number of months, and Yapperbot is currently in the process of taking over from Legobot in performing the requests. In that process, the subscription categories have been updated to match the current categories used by the Good Articles project, and neither "Arts" nor "Everyday life" is used anymore.

What this means is:

  • If you were subscribed to "Arts", your preference has been transferred to Art and architecture as a new category, which you have automatically been opted in to. You may also be interested in Music and/or Media and drama; however, you have not automatically been opted in to these. If you wish to opt in to these, you should follow the process below.
  • If you were subscribed to "Everyday life", you have been unsubscribed entirely from that category, as the category is too vague to assign to any of the new, more specific, categories.

You are encouraged to review your FRS preferences to ensure that they match your interests; there are a number of new categories you can now opt in to additionally. To do this, you should:

  1. Go to the Feedback Request Service page.
  2. If you were previously subscribed to "Arts" and wish to unsubscribe from "Art and architecture", scroll to that subheading and remove your {{Frs user}} template.
  3. If you wish to subscribe to an additional category, you should do so by pasting {{Frs user|{{subst:currentuser}}|limit}} underneath the relevant heading, where limit is the maximum number of requests you wish to receive for that category per month.
  4. Publish the page.

Please note that any subscription preferences you had with the FRS for requests for comment have not been affected by these changes.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on the Feedback Request Service talk page, or on Yapperbot's operator's talk page. Thank you!

Editing news 2020 #3

On 16 March 2020, the 50 millionth edit was made using the visual editor on desktop.

Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:

  • The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
  • More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
  • Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
  • The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
  • Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
  • On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
  • In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.

Reply tool

The number of comments posted with the Reply Tool from March through June 2020. People used the Reply Tool to post over 7,400 comments with the tool.

The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.

  • More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
  • Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
  • Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[20]

The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).

The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.

New requirements for user signatures

  • The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
  • Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can check your signature and see lists of active editors whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page.

Next: New discussion tool

Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the New Discussion Tool project page on your watchlist.

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:29, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
