Re Favor

The problem is there is no calibrated Washington map for the Geobox - see User_talk:VerruckteDan#Calibrated_Washington_map_for_Geobox_use_request. I have never calibrated one of these maps, but will try to do so in the next 24 hours. Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 19:09, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

I think the problem was perhaps a WP:BYC issue - my last edit on the map last night was just remeasuring on Google Earth - apparently I got it right the second time doing that (ninth tweak overall). • "Pundarika asks Krishna for a boon to stay in that form..." Awkward connection between "boon" and "stay in that form". It reads as though the boon is staying in some form.
• "When he asked the reason for their appearance, they told Pundalik that Kukkuta served his parents and thus became pious and that by serving the sage they became pure too." Snake sentence.
• "Pundalik and his wife [..] forced the parents to walk the whole way and to groom horses while Pundalik and his wife rode on horseback." Pundalik's parents are grooming the moving horses while Pundalik and his wife ride them?

Bridge Creeks all over the place

Hi, I saw that you had changed the Bridge Creek (John Day River) title to Bridge Creek (Oregon). The problem with this is that Oregon has many streams named Bridge Creek. Please see the GNIS list here. Adding the parent-stream name is a standard way to differentiate multiple streams with the same name in the same state. If you agree with this logic, could you please revert your change? Finetooth (talk) 01:07, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

I agree with your logic if this were an issue at Wikipedia. However, there are only currently two articles about streams named Bridge Creek. One is Bridge Creek (British Columbia) and the other is the one in question. No doubt there are hundreds(?) of streams with that name all over North America but it doesn't seem that they are notable or at any rate they don't have articles at Wikipedia. Therefore, there's no need to differentiate from any other creek (except the one in BC). WP:NC:LFORM says that "in practice, most rivers needing disambiguation have been identified by the smallest appropriate political entity." For interests of symmetry and ease of the general reader, I would prefer this format, i.e., Bridge Creek (Oregon), but I'm not adamant about it if you have strong feelings on the issue since "a river can be identified uniquely as a tributary of another river." Certainly if other Oregon Bridge Creeks have articles written about them in the future, this would be the way to go, but, as of now I feel the widest possible disambiguator serves the general audience of Wikipedia the best. — AjaxSmack 14:29, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

When not feeling well I become very literal - sorry. The joke seems clearer today (and I am feeling somewhat better, though not 100%). The old Market Street Bridge had an open steel grate deck and also "sang" with traffic. They would take sections of the deck out at night and repair the surroundings - it was always surreal to drive across in the dark and see a figure halfway out of the deck surrounded by showers of sparks. Your story made me realize that the wooden bridges I work on may well be (some of) the oldest bridges in their counties. Will have to check that. Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 20:32, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind offer - I am feeling mostly better, but am also busy in real life just now. Not sure what else I need help with. I have thought in the near future to try and go to reviewing only PR requests with no repsonse that were planning to go to FAC / FLC as a way of cutting back. I had also thought of making a "Common problems seen in articles at Peer Review" page and just dropping a link to it in the ones I did not review. My goal for today is to get Plunketts Creek Bridge No. 3 far enough along to nominate it for DYK, then finish responding to your PR comments, and reviewing a few articles. The AP Bio class articles at PR are sort of like watching a rodent move through a python - the lump is working its way down and slowly getting smaller. At least these are generally better articles than the various Entomology class articles at PR earlier this year. Once the articles through the 22nd are done, it will have been 9 months since the all PRs get a response began. That is seeming more and more like a good stopping point. DYKs

I know you mentioned on one of the talk pages about trying for some DYKs, which is great. First, someone nominated your Fairview Creek for one. Next, since you didn't seem real clear on the process I thought I would give you quick rundown. FYI I almost nominated the Dairy Creek (which if I find the source again at the state archives I'll note in the article that it was originally spelled Dary or Darry) and the Bybee wetlands articles. But there were two different problems, which leads into the criteria. Roughly:

• Start class articles and above (1500 characters of prose) (pretty much everything you write meets this)
• Created w/i the last 5 days or expand by 5X in the last 5 days
• Interesting "hook"
• Hook is cited inline from a RS

So that's the basics, thus most of the new articles you write qualify. Expansion is tricker, so personally I only bother trying for a DYK from an expansion if I started with a paragraph or less. The reason I didn't nom Dairy Creek was because I didn't find anything particularly interesting that I thought the "hook" checkers would agree was interesting. Unique type stuff usually works, and there if I could remember where I saw it, thus the fact that it is the largest tributary (not sure if by length or flow) of the Tualatin might have worked in conjunction with the Tualatin being the only river in Washington County. With Bybee, I was going to go with the one of the largest wetlands in the US bit, but it was a bit vague and the source was not from a third party. So, when you write in the future, keep that in mind and you can get your article featured on the main page, which in the past often means about 1000 hits, where on a typical day it might only get 5. I'll answer here rather than sending two notes. Thanks to you both. I have been 100 percent remiss about submitting suggestions for DYKs. I say to myself each time the idea occurs to me, "When things settle down, I'll look into that stuff." Things never settle down. However, your helpful and gentle nudges are welcome, and I'm telling myself to make some DYK efforts in the near future. I've been generating sidebar articles to go with Columbia Slough. That's the main reason I created Fairview Creek, Delta Park, Jacob Zimmerman House, and Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area. I think I might already have a hook for Blue Lake, which sits in its own tiny watershed north of Fairview Lake and has peculiar hydrological arrangements. Me? I'm still at my same old haunts: Lafayette and the Louvre. I'm spending a lot of time on Laf now; mostly working on fixing POV problems in the French Revolution section (some my fault, some not). In other news, I've been trying to (still) revive WP:FRANCE and review articles for A-class on Milhist. Borchgrevink Peer review

Thank you for your review of this article. I shall certainly attend to the points you raise. On the question of the Bay of Whales pic I'm not too worried about losing that. What about Image:Ross Ice Shelf 1997.jpg as an alternative? It appears to have NOAA status which I think covers it for PD? Otherwise, in one of my old books I have a really old picture of the Ross Ice Shelf from Ross's Voyage to the South Seas, 1844. It's a drawing, not a photograph, but very graphic. And Ross's party were the only people, prior to Borchgrevink's men, to actually see the Barrier. Re: Image license question

Hi Finetooth, I do not think the image is public domain in the United States (hence failing for storage on either Wikipedia and Commons). This came about because the original map was not public domain in Canada by 1996. I will try to break down the issues involved.

1. Note that commons:Commons:Image casebook#Maps specifically states all maps are copyrighted (unless the copyright holder says so otherwise).
2. The Atlas of Canada is a Canadian government work and hence falls under Crown copyrights.
3. As stated on its website,[1] it is free for non-commercial use, but not free for commercial ventures. Permission is needed for commercial use. "Freely available" does not equate to "free for any use".
4. This flowchart states that such works would fall into public domain 50 years after its publishing.
5. Hence, the 1957 map is in Canadian public domain on 2007.
6. However, the US has signed a copyright treaty, the URAA, that renews the copyrights of the existing works then.
7. This URAA agreement renews the United States copyright of foreign works unpublished in US; any foreign work that was not in public domain on January 1, 1996, had its copyright extended or renewed.
8. In the case of the 1957 map, its copyright for the United States last until 1957 + 95 = 2052.
9. Hence, although the original map is in Canadian public domain, it will not be in US public domain until 2052.

I could recommend that the editor concerned could instead of using the 1957 map, use the 1915 map (which is definitely PD in US due to publishing before 1923), or use maps sourced from GeoGratis, which has declared all the works stored on it as public domain.
