You seem to know how to fill in bare references. I recently corrected/changed the refs (and added quite a few additional ones) on Matthew Jay as they seemed to be about 10 years out of date and very antiqued and made it difficult to follow and edit the article. Would be appreciated if you could help.

Linkrot template

I am told (this template states quite clearly that it is only for "inline citations" - ELs have to be altered manually).

What I do, not that is a recommendation as such, is fill in the bare URL(s) in 'external links' using Refill, but make sure that the <ref> marks either side are then removed, before completing the edit. I can not see the problem with this approach. Who told you otherwise, and where is the quote you used above. I have never seen it before. This page makes no mention of not using Refill on external links. Apart from anything else, I oftimes follow the mandate of Ignore all rules !

You may know, or perhaps you do not, that I spend a lot of my time here using Refill, to try to put some clothes on those articles with bare URLs. Personally, although I have used both Reflinks and Refill for some considerable time, so my judgement is hideously biased, I feel that it is a fairly simple thing to use. I can tell though that many editors shudder at the thought, perhaps thinking that the bot will blow up and render Wikipedia, or themselves, instantly sterile (or dead). Each to their own. Many of Wikipedia's editing guidelines make me laugh, for fundamentally they assume that all editors understand the wording therein. Even after 12 years here, I am can not make head nor tail of half of them. They then presume that editors will all follow like sheep and "do the right thing". Let me make this as simple as I can, I have no frigging idea what Twinkle is ! To me this is Twinkle, god bless her. The disambig page suggests it could be "a hypothetical integer factorization device". Sorry, just fell off my chair with that one.

Probably what I am driving at is that we are all different, and I don't Twinkle (except on extra special nights), and you do not Refill. Fine by me, and yes the "documentation" wording is not realistic. If I am allowed a final gripe, it is the annoyance caused to me by those editors who rarely, if ever, use Refill, yet find it fair and proper to post here, dutifully pointing out my shortcomings (real or otherwise) when I am simply having a go and trying to improve dear old Wiki. The real crux of the potential problem on Ranini Cundasawmy's article is the amount of detail shown under the sub-heading of 'Citations'. What are these details precisely, do they actually reference/support the article's text, are they merely duplication of the references used therein, in other words what purpose do they serve ? There are sufficient references to support the text as it stands, so is it necessary or helpful to the reader to have these citations included in the article ? If these do not serve any real purpose, then they could be deleted, and the "sources remain unclear because it has insufficient inline citations" tag removed. Alternatively, if they do support the text, then they need to be included in-line, in a similar style to the existing references.

Finally, please remember to sign your comments/talk. 4 x ~ will serve this purpose.

Access dates for subscription-only sources

Hi Derek, could I suggest that you consider not adding access dates when expanding bare urls for subscription-only sources? Your edit at Graham Yallop introduced access dates for a large number of CricketArchive pages that, judging by the non-descriptive ref titles, you don't have access to. Subscription sites do present a problem. To be fair, {Refill} adds its own accessdate(s) as part of the bot's processes, which in this case was more than a few ! If anyone with subscription to the CricketArchive pages wishes to add more descriptive titles, then I have no objection. I do try hard to be as astute as possible when using {Refill}, with many manual interventions along the way. But, hey-ho, there are limits to how far one can be expected to delve, particularly when there were 200 or so bare urls to fill. I do my best.

Thanks for tweaking the references, but the citations now have incorrect titles. The Ancestry site gives access to public records, and it is those public records - such as "New York City, Births, 1891-1902" - that should appear in the list of references in the article, rather than "Search Ancestry", etc. I don't want to revert your entire edit, but your (automated or otherwise) last edit now provides wrong information. Bare URLs

I noticed that you like formatting bare URLs and wondered whether you had come across User:DilletantiAnonymous, who is writing MANY articles, mostly stubs, on paintings in which he/she uses bare URLs. There are too many for me to (want to) tag but I thought it possible that you might be interested to know about them.Eustachiusz (talk) 23:14, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

To say that I like formatting bare URLs is a bit of an exaggeration - in an ideal world, I would never have to do another one ! The user you cite is unknown to me, but given that he/she seems to be concentrating on paintings - not an interest of mine - that may be part of the reason. It is not a perfect situation that someone is creating stub articles with bare URLs, but far worse things happen here. If the articles are not tagged as such, they will not pass before the eyes of the relatively few editiors that work on such cases.

I love the title in this which you added. For personal musical (/financial) reasons I've been interested in them since about 1982 and I've always been struck by their lack of grandiosity ... there was an interview (at the time) with Glenn Gregory in NME or something in which he claimed that at the time he was the Best Baritone in Sheffield ... It was hosted by Martyn Ware and a rather tubby looking Ana Matronic - a rather curious mix - who seemed to be largely congratulating each other in having similar musical taste. The bulk of the programme was videos showing their mutual preferences in action. There may have been more to it than that - I missed the first ten minutes or so. Anyhow, it passed me half an hour in relative discomfort. I never totally forgave Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh for breaking up the best line-up of The Human League. But each to his own. Cheers,

Ah yes indeed. I am almost sorry I missed the documentary, but having read your review, perhaps not. I have a feeling that Martyn Ware has some kind of consultancy job on a digital music masters' course at QMUL, a university which has no music department but hey. As for the Human League, well yes they lost that rather great lineup but it does not seem to have harmed their prospects too much ... cheers DBaK (talk) 22:50, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

Jackie Daly

Hello there o venerable grandmaster (actually I am a little more venerable than thou). Thanks for adding the maintenance template to the Jackie Daly article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Daly) asking for inline citations. I have added a bunch of these and removed the template - perhaps I should not have done. Could you have a look at the page and let me know (or put the template back) if you think that the issues you raised have not been dealt with sufficiently? Hello Spinaci. It is good to know that there are still those more venerable than little old me ! I have had another look at the article - well done on your efforts. I have spruced up several things; such as punctuation before referencing, and added a Wiki preferred styling of said citations. Whilst I could point out that several of the sentences/paragraphs in the 'Music career' section are without references, as is the entire discography, I am more than content in you removing the maintenance tag. I rarely get hung up on such things, particularly when another editor is obviously taking time out to improve matters. Happy editing,
