User Page Feedback[edit]

This is a good start! Your topic is very important, and I'm glad you're working on it. Right now, it's too big. Your next step is to really search around for what is written (in "print" such as books and journal articles, as well as from reports) and also on Wikipedia. If you want to do a comparison between Australia, UK, and U.S., that might be obtainable. What about shifting to three comparisons that are not all anglophile? I recommend a conversation with a reference librarian to help you locate resources, too.

Again, I really encourage you to keep working on this vital topic. Consider reading ahead to the Furlong chapter on health. Also, our library has an ebook of a great new work, Respect Yourself, Protect Yourself about how Latina girls navigate safe sex by sociologist Lorena Garcia. Feedback[edit]

Hi Courtney! I find your topic really interesting as well, but to piggy back off Professor Vandegrift's comment I would focus on one facet of the topic. Maybe you could take the HIV/Aids angle from the documentary and look at that as an STI and the awareness in South Africa? Any topic in the realm of reproduction would be very relevant, it is really just what you will want to study all semester! :) AllieQuinn7 (talk) 22:28, 21 February 2013 (UTC)AllieQuinn7[reply]

Welcome[edit]

Hi Courtney. Welcome to Wikipedia! I'm an online ambassador for your Global Youth Studies course at Drake. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, chat with us on IRC, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question.

I think the reproductive rights article could benefit from a section discussing the rights of minors. Your ideas for the name of the section and its placement sound good. You may want to check out abortion law as well as minors and abortion. Access to information is also addressed at sex education. You should know that because reproductive rights are a controversial topic, you should take extra care to ensure that additions comply with Wikipedia's neutrality policy. Follow-Up[edit]

Hi! Thanks for working with me on this topic. I am more interested in access to reproductive mechanisms (contraception, sex education) then I am about promoting or arguing against abortion (which I am not allowed to do anyway). In your opinion, would that fit more in the Reproductive rights article? The Sex education article is enticing - would it be appropriate to include access to reproductive mechanisms in addition to the policies in the different countries, since it is already divided that way? Let me know your insights on where my interests could best be included on Wikipedia. I don't really want to be controversial. Court caitlin (talk) 00:36, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you're still settling on an article, I think you have some options.
  • The reproductive rights article could use a section for the rights of minors, but the scope of that article is largely centered on legal rights.
  • Sex education and sex education curriculum don't really address access to contraceptive devices and I don't think including that would be within the scope of the article except where access is part of the curricula.
  • Birth control#Prevalence discusses access, but it already has 'Good Article' status, so it isn't a good candidate.
  • I'm just now seeing the family planning article, which has a broader scope. That might be more along the lines of what you were originally looking for. There are also Family planning in... articles for India, Iran, Pakistan, the United States, and Hong Kong.

Classmate Feedback[edit]

Courtney, I love your idea with working on Sex Education. I think that would be such a fascinating topic. While I was briefly looking at the page I noticed that there is nothing on countries in South America. Im not sure if that is something that you would be interested in, but if so maybe you could edit the page by adding a section about that continent. Best of luck! Feed Back[edit]

I think this is a great topic, and would be useful to the public. I am wondering if you will need to break your topic into a focused area/region in order to fairly represent the youth in that area. Maybe you could have your sub-topics dealing with different regions and issues in those areas. AshleyMichelleThompson (talk) 17:44, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback[edit]

I think it is great that you are taking a global approach to reproductive rights instead of looking at a certain country! My question is how are you deciding which countries to focus on in particular? I would assume you will get a wide array from different parts of the world, with different cultures and levels of SES. Also, I think it was great that you are being intentional not to put your own opinions into your page. Keep up the good work! Scarlson0921 (talk) 16:58, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Draft feedback: Doing great![edit]

I love your article topic! I post these comments on the talk page so everyone can help you with edits. I think your work is at a good draft stage, and I like it!

My most labor-intensive suggestion is to seek to make your sections parallel to each other, so the information in one somewhat aligns with information in another. Can you create an outline that each case study will roughly follow?

  • What stats do you have about access to reproductive health?
  • What Linking to other articles will you do to bind your work to the entire Wikipedia project?
  • Might the section be called “Youth Reproductive Rights Globally”? Or “Youth Reproductive Rights: Country and Regional Cases.”
  • Edit for clarity, and be brutal in getting rid of extraneous details (e.g., "a large continent" - and, Africa is a large continent, too) Also the details about Jordan - just link to the country, like this: Jordan has a large youth population with limited access to reproductive health information.
  • Why is the U.S. listed first? Why Europe and not countries? Or, should it be “European Union?” Maybe you should make the sections all be region - it feels a bit fragmented to have U.S., Europe, Africa, then Jordan.

I feel you can still strive for more WP:Neutral Point of View in your U.S. writing. For example: Family planning can be expensive or: “Sex has been a touchy subject for all of America, including the youth population.” Seems like a murky opinion. Could you give opinion poll data about how the public feels about youth reproductive access? Or, the example from the morning after pill ruling from earlier this month? link to NYT article

I'm sure I will have more suggestions, but this very strong first draft is ready for a round of revisions and peer edits. Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 19:46, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More feedback[edit]

Hi Courtney. Your draft for reproductive rights is looking good. One major aspect of youth rights that I don't see in your draft is parental consent laws. Guttmacher has a good overview of their status in the US.

I agree with Professor Vandegrift that creating parallel layouts for your sections will aid in readability. As for the order, often times in Wikipedia, regions and/or countries are listed in alphabetical order. You may also consider naming your section 'Rights of minors' or something similar in line with the women's and men's rights sections. I think that any information about the rates of sexually transmitted infections needs to be contextualized to be relevant in this article. While STI rates are part of reproductive health, their link to reproductive rights is nuanced and less immediate. Gobōnobō + c 19:11, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
