Appropriate technology for developing countries[edit]

If you're interested in Appropriate technology for developing countries, then please say hi here. Maybe a Wikiproject would be a good idea, but this spot here will do for now. --Singkong2005 07:59, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Do we want a category for development organizations? These would be those with a focus on development, rather than just relief. (Relief organizations would also be a useful category to have). --Singkong2005 07:59, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Change of username[edit]

I have changed my username on all Wiki sites from Singkong to Singkong2005. This is to make it possible to distinguish between singkong (the Indonesian word for cassava), and my username, when searching in Wikipedia. Singkong2005 13:35, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Note: In Feb to June 2005, before registering, I also made minor contributions as 203.173.53.135 and 203.217.23.173. Singkong2005 23:26, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wilayah[edit]

Wilayah doesn't have any official meaning in Indonesian. It just means "area" or "territory". A province is called provinsi (or sometimes propinsi) in Indonesian. Meursault2004 8 July 2005 14:43 (UTC)

Language learning[edit]

Hi singkong, i am Tobias, we met on Wilayah article. Your language learning program looks ambitious or even crazy. If you meet someone in Germany the first words might be "Guten Tag" ([wish you a] Good day). It would be used to say hello , no good bye. I am very impressed, arabic, hindi, mandarin .... I only learned different european languages, but in opposite to your languages, they have very much in common. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 9 July 2005 10:22 (UTC)

help me understand[edit]

I don't understand why the Singapore/Batam bit is is the article... you have placed it back. Help me understand it's importance to the understanding of sex tourism. If you want it in there, please include a few other countries without such laws.... otherwise, it just sorta sticks out.

thanks,

me

Hello "me",
1. I would have asked the person who removed the Singapore/Batam bit what their reasons were, but they were anonymous. They gave no reasons in their "Edit Summary". Also, the same user who removed it is apparently the same person who makes a habit of vandalizing Wikipedia articles (judging by other edits made from that IP address). So I wasn't inclined to take them seriously.
2. Being incomplete is better than not being there. Other Wikipedians can add other examples that they know of, and/or I will add more information as I'm able to. "It just sorta sticks out" is a reason for editing something, but not for removing it. --Singkong2005 00:56, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

water-borne diseases[edit]

I'm adding the category to all the parasites I can think of. The only real judgment call was schistosomiasis/schistosoma/schistosomatidae, where people are infected from being in water rather than from drinking it. I don't know if that counts. I thought I'd let you know. Keep up the good work. Dave (talk) 08:03, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I hope to have some great new stuff for you to see, involving this article and this one. Hopefully I can get them into articles without being too disruptive :-). Dave (talk) 06:05, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio[edit]

Thanks for your "wet blanket" note. I didn't add the image of Alfred E. Neuman; it was part of another user's comment on my talk page. In general, my attitude toward my talk page is very laissez-faire. I don't remove comments just because they're ill-informed or uncivil or whatever. Copyvio, though, is a necessary exception. I've censored the other user to the extent of replacing the actual image with a link. I appreciate your calling this to my attention. JamesMLane 00:06, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I actually live in the ACT these days (formerly a Victorian), but I've been finding NSW's political history a little bit more interesting, which has inspired me to do a bit more work there. I see you're assumedly in NSW - I don't suppose you might be interested in the same? It'd be nice not to have to write all the articles myself. :) Ambi 02:11, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Userpage[edit]

Hi Singkong2005,

I personally am not an expert on page formatting. The person to talk to would be User:Cool Cat. He's the one who came up with the general format for my page in the first page. However, I also suggest looking at Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page as it contains a lot of general hints towards formatting. Sorry I can't be that much of a help, but if you have any more questions, I'll always try to answer them. Linuxbeak (drop me a line) 13:27, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One thing you need to do is fix your "click here to leave me a message" box. It still redirects to my user talk page ;-) Linuxbeak (drop me a line) 13:31, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fairmount Water Works[edit]

You move the article on the Fairmount Water Works into Category:Water management authorities, the problem is, based upon the Water works themselve and the other articles in the category, it not management authority, the authority was the City of Philadelphia Water Department (PWD). The works were, as they are no longer used in the fuction, as a kinda distrubution system, but i could not find a category that would best to place it in. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 07:48, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair play. I was thinking about putting it under the treatment category, but i didnt really think it fit their either. I'll keep it with the current, though of a facalites cat comes open, and i didn't want to do ne cat for one article, being that their are other working on the area, i think it would be a good fit. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:07, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting a userbox[edit]

Hi Cool Cat - commendations on your suavely formatted user page. Thanks for the code I stole.

Could you advise me on how to align a userbox with text, e.g. the Members section of WikiProject International development?

<center> doesn't seem to work, and I don't know how to stop the text from wrapping.

Any other formatting help on that page would be much appreciated. Thanks! --Singkong2005 10:54, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Appropriate technology - merge, category.[edit]

(moved from User:Singkong2005/Appropriate technology

Thanks Singkong for the personal note on the merge proposal. My personal concern comes from issues noted in Wikipedia:Disambiguation about using the most common term. I also think that "appropriate techology" is the more common phrase, so if a merge takes place it should be toward that rather than the longer term. If the two articles were combined at appropriate technology I wouldn't have a concern, and I think that comparing the two within the same article (with strong links to Schumacher's original definition) would make for a better, single article. Until an article gets to around a dozen subheadings or 20K or so I don't feel much is gained by splitting it into pieces.
For a good example of how two almost-warring sides can get along one might check out the integration of the term journal in the diary article. For an example of how splitting an article too quickly can lead to problems check out the teeny article at blood sport and the inappropriately-named article blood sport (hunting) which isn't about hunting at all. I would hate for something like that to happen under the longer name.
I think the idea of a category is terrific, though. Thanks for asking. I would strongly support a merge FROM appropriate technology for developing countries TO appropriate technology, but think the shorter phrase is stronger and more common. - Rorybowman 05:02, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If not a category perhaps a List of appropriate technologies or List of appropriate technologies for developing countries? Rorybowman 05:08, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good to know that talk on subpages doesn't get flagged, so thanks for telling me that. If it is okay with you I will try to find some time to run a once-through on the new merged Appropriate technology page this coming week. Thanks for all your work on this! - Rorybowman 16:22, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Boxes...[edit]

Hi Cool Cat - I'm looking to learn from for your table mastery again... I'm having trouble with userboxes on my userpage this time, making them all stick to the right. See here. I want the Wikiproject boxes and the text to fill in on the left - don't know why it isn't working. Suggestions or edits appreciated. (You can ignore the edit after the link I gave - I reverted the changes so it's not a complete mess). Cheers, Singkong2005 14:05, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried to fix your page. Better?
I have one advice unrelated to your request: You may want to break your userpage into topic spesific sub pages.
--Cool CatTalk|@ 14:53, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again. Working on your suggestion.
I'm not sure why the right hand box has a large blank left border though. Its width is specified to be 240px, and the boxes inside it specify width: 242px; in their templates, but it won't go narrower.
Can I get your assistance with {{totd b}}? I want to make it more compact but can't make the text wrap around the image. Any suggestions/improvements welcome. (I'm also making a suggestions for change to the Tip of the day format on the talk page.) Thanks! --Singkong2005 04:37, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Signs[edit]

Thanks for letting me know re: the size of the signature. I had just copied it from someone else and did not see a difference on my screen. In fact, I still do not see a difference so please let me know if it is normal size now. I used 'drdan' as a signature since I first signed up on Wiki. A couple of weeks ago I was mixed up with a vandal/troll and decided to change my signature to a homonym of my username rxnd / erikssond. I will be using that one from now on. To my understanding, this is not considered sock puppeteering and should be OK. Thanks for the Wikia-link. I will have a look at it, but I will not have much time at all over the next two months. Have a nice time in Indonesia! --rxnd ( t | | c ) 14:59, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the encouraging words! I am focusing my time on that project now, hence my low activity in the international development arena. The two project are however closely related in the areas of international disaster management. --rxnd ( t | | c ) 22:59, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As the article is focused on the hazard of natural arsenic contamination I put it in Environmental threats/Pollution/Water pollution (even though it isn't directly man-made). If the article would focus on the situation in Bangladesh it would be categorised under Environmental disasters. Maybe it should be split into two articles, one on the geological phenomena and one on the Bangladesh event? It would definitely be interesting if the article included a section on the geophysical theory behind the contamination. --rxnd ( t | | c ) 16:35, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops. I stuck the article in Category:Environmental disasters before reading this. I still think it fits in that category, but I also agree with Erikssond's plan for how this topic should develop. As the articles split off, the different categories should go with the corresponding articles. Carcharoth 11:27, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DVDs[edit]

Chris,

I wanted to discuss a little more about DVDs as compared to the internet possibilities. It is best explained below.

Using Portable DVD Players to Educate People

Eldis OnDisc: Eldis is at the forefront of development information technology. People in the south do not have the internet access that the north does. We have decided to provide CDs which will enable the distribution to a wider audience than we currently reach. Eldis conducted a feasibility study to assess the potential impact of providing CDs. We discovered an over-whelming need for them and they will make our information available to a much wider audience.

Jan 06 Ken, this is something you have had in mind for some time, use portable DVD players and DVDs to teach the world. Seems these people have spent a lot of time and money perfecting it and it is working, even beyond their dreams. This is just beyond belief. They are training people at a rapid rate. It is like attending Harvard or Oxford in the middle of the Amazon. You simply bring Harvard or Oxford to the student on a DVD. They have solar powered DVDs for areas without electricity. Thank God for technology!! The whole school fits in a small briefcase. Ben

3 Feb 06. Ken, This morning I talked with Brick Cliff, the one with the DVD training. The exciting thing is that one man can, in theory, have 7 schools, one in a different town everyday. They have one, two, or more men, say in Mexico, that are running several training schools, some with 20 students each. The trainer goes from city to city so the students attend class once per week. The good part is there is little expense, no people to house, no books to buy, all the printed material is copied at the source. Ken, this is something that is working; it is not theory and they are training thousands of people all over the world. Brick travels to different countries to oversee the training. Ben

Mar 06: A letter arrived from Ghana stating that he found my address on the internet offering DVDs and would I please send him some. He enclosed a British pound coin [$2]. I mailed him 3 DVDs. Just think, here is a man out in the bush of Africa who got my address. This proves that there is no limit to the use of the internet and DVDs.

Portable DVD Players There is no country on earth where these cannot be used to teach people. In the USA, a player without a screen [plugs into a TV] cost $30. They are available with 7” to 10” screens for US$80 to $150. They play NSTC and PAL. They operate on 220, 120 & 12 v. They have cables to connect to a TV and a 12 v. battery.

24 Feb 06 Please tell me what advantage DVDs and portable players offer over computers with CD drives and CD players. Please be very specific about the advantages you see. Bob Towell, WEI

I have lived in two developing countries and I have taught in 16 more. Go to any one of those countries and it is only a very small percentage of the people who have a computer. There are Cybercafes in most towns but only a small percentage of the people have the money to use them. Nigeria: 75,000,000 Nigerians live in poverty & have no access to computers and the internet. India: 250,000,000 cannot afford them or the cybercafe. They can be taught with portable DVD players and DVDs. Many can not read but they can see and hear the study. Imagine what would happen if all organizations had players and DVDs. Not only could they teach others but they could learn more and teach people to read or garden/farm or whatever. They could teach thousands of people. Those millions could access knowledge on a DVD. To do that same thing with books, in just one country, would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and thousands of dollars to ship them. I borrowed a player and watched a DVD. I could have been in the jungles of Latin America or in the bush of Africa just as well as in my home.

¡People who cannot read and write can learn by watch-ing and listening! There are many free DVDs available. Ken Hargesheimer minifarms@gmail.com Workshops in organic, 0-tillage gardening/farming in permanent beds with bucket drip irrigation.

It just occurred to me that you probably saw this on nabuur.com. Anyway, I can go to any village in the world and teach the farmers, etc. anything they want to learn.

WikiProject:Urban studies and planning[edit]

Hi I've created the Wikiproject for Urban planning. You'll find it here - Wikipedia:WikiProject:Urban studies and planning. I'll see if I can get some UK planners to sign up for it. Perhaps we could have a go at filling in some of the blanks in the template?--Mcginnly 23:10, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Very good. I'd like to cut out large chunks that seem irrelevant and archive them (at Wikipedia:WikiProject:Urban studies and planning/Archive1). Does that seem okay? My idea of how to lay out a WikiProject can be seen at Wikipedia:WikiProject International development - I was trying to do something a little different, to get people in and make it easy for them to find a way to contribute. Not sure how effective it is... but anyway, see what you think, and copy and/or modify anything as you see fit. --Singkong2005

Appropedia[edit]

Thank you for adding the http://www.appropedia.org site to Appropriate technology. This site does intend to differentiate in function from wikipedia in a few ways, encouraging, in addition to encyclopedic entries:

  • original research
  • personal/organizational pages for collaboration
  • project writeups
  • how-to's
  • Common working pages for relevant grants, events, calls for assistance, offerings of assistance, etc.

The layers of appropedia are categories and subcategories functioning as textbook style writeups, with articles, functioning as project/how-to submissions, underneath them. Users can, for instance:

  1. Look up greywater
  2. Read about greywater concepts
  3. View case-studies, how-to's and common errors to avoid for various greywater projects
  4. Edit and add their own greywater experiences, projects, how-to's and common errors to avoid

or skip to any of these steps.

Other layers (hopefully namespaces) are personal/organizational pages, used for networking, and common working pages as described in the bulleted list above.

Please check out the new projects that have been added this week. And more importantly please consider contributing some of your amazing expertise and energy. I understand your opinion on duplicating wikipedia's function, and I hope that you find appropedia to be a value-added and different wiki. Finally I would love to hear about any of your opinions on the nascent appropedia site.

Solar chimney[edit]

I used links (external and page history) from your comment at Talk:Solar chimney to edit that article. Still needs work, but it's a start. --Singkong2005 (t - c - WPID) 05:59, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So you bit the bullet! I had been hesitant about making the change myself in view of the fact that it seems to be a rather controversial topic. Still a lot of cleaning up to do; the article can probably be cut in half. I actually think the whole thing is a dud, and that the investors may have done the right thing by dragging their feet before putting money into it; see the discussion under Talk:Energy Tower.
It may be more interesting to extend the article on the Solar chimney (new style). As you noticed, I did quite a bit of surfing on the topic, and it turns out that there is a lot of interesting stuff out there. JdH 09:05, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, since the 24 June I have rewritten Solar chimney, and did a an extensive editing job on Solar Tower, and renamed that article to Solar updraft tower. But look: I haven't finished cleaning up and there pops up another one, please have a look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Floating Solar Chimney Technology. I would appreciate you opinion on that one. JdH 13:39, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Cats[edit]

Good work on categorisation. I was wondering about the capitalisation of Category:Without Borders Organisations - I think it should be Category:Without Borders organisations (cap B as it's part of the title of the organisations, but small o). I wanted to check with you as it's not a simple move - it seems the only way is to create a separate cat, and edit each article.
After that's sorted we can add other organisations - this link can help find some.
No probs. I did it in a hurry. A agree it needs changing. I realised this mistake too, but moving a category is harder than moving an article. Perhaps just flag the original for speedy deletion and create the correctly name category afresh. Cheers! — Donama 01:59, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Community Builders TaskForce[edit]

Hello Singkong2005! I am so very happy that you decided to join the WP:CBTF! I've been very lonely there and it's extremely encouraging that a man with your interests and background has decided to join the effort. I've been pouring over the things you've linked to on your user page and I see that we share a lot of common ground. I'm a strong advocate of community building at the worldwide level and intersted in things like world peace, green development, ecovillages, sustainability, technology transfer, appropriate technology, community studies and many many more topics, that I think we have in common. The whole focus of the Wikipedia community development strategy is to identify wikipedians that are keenly interested in the processes and procedures connected with concepts like consensus decision-making, conflict resolution and Wikipedia:User categorization. The idea is to define Wikipedia as both a community of interest and a community of practice as well as a learning community. I've needed "another head" in this thing with me for a long time. I've had extensive conversations with Sj, Cormaggio and a tiny handful of others who want to analyse m:The Wikipedia Community and identify structures and functions that are conducive to community building within this way of life.

Another role, in addition to the primary one of managing and improving wikipedia content about community, is to create an pervasive "project space" here in the article space, here in the Project namespace, at Meta, and the new "incubator" at incubator.wikimedia.org for collecting and refining "original" articles that examine the community aspects down here in the wikipedia space, meta, . I have launched a program:

The idea is to invoke the spirit of community all over the world during these trying times. You strike me as one who could get excited about such. Follow that series, if you have time and let me know what you think.

Couple of other questions:

  • Could you also enroll yourself on the participants list?
  • Do you use IRC? If so, I can meet you at #wikiproject and we can work in realtime.
  • Where the heck are you? Austrailia? Indonesia? You get around!

I'm interested in your thoughts on how to procede as a TaskForce of now only 2, and how we can get it going and growing. Oh BTW, the {{WP:CBTF}} task table is a long way from being workable. (only a draft at this time) We need need more discussion and participation at Proposed tasks. Thanks again, Chris. Later! • CQ 21:42, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Allegations of sock puppetry on the Center for Science in the Public Interest page[edit]

Allegations of sock puppetry have been made against some of the accounts that have edited the Center for Science in the Public Interest page. I have instigated the wiki process for handling such allegations. See Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/David Justin. As someone who has contributed to the CSPI page, please add your views to the Comments section. You have up to 10 days to make comments on the allegation. A check user Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/David Justin has shown "that Wright, Creighton, and Wise are sockpuppets". These accounts are Bryant Wright, Ralph Creighton, Stu Wise. Other suspected sock puppets are too old to check. I will keep everyone informed of progress. Nunquam Dormio 09:30, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Singkong, looks like a good topic which I'm surprised hasn't been created before. I think SS as an abbreviation may be misleading as settleable solids are also an important factor in waste water treatment. The settleable solids increase effluent discharge costs due to blocking up of sewerage pipes. --Alex 15:18, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note to self re Solar Tower[edit]

I was going to add this to Talk:Solar Tower, but I want to get it straight in my own head first.

The terms that are commonly used seem rather ambiguous, so we may have to go for less common terms, if necessary. But if it's possible to resolve ambiguity with a term in brackets, that's an option, but I'm not sure which is better. (Updraft) & (downdraft) are good suggestions. Other ideas for clarifying some of the many solar-related articles include adding (thermal solar power) and/or (power generation) to the names.
I would still like to move the current Solar tower to Solar tower (astronomy, as that would be much clearer and avoid wrong linking when someone writes about the solar power style of tower. (Also note that googling "solar tower" gives more hits for the updraft style structure than anything else.) Any objections to this rename? Jdh, you don't seem keen, so I'll wait for your comment.
Sorry if I'm not being very clear... the whole terminology thing is a bit of a mess.

Solar updraft tower[edit]

Re Talk:Solar updraft tower#Neutrality

Hi - I haven't had time to look at this in detail. I'm not certain which editor your were concerned about... From what I saw of FlexMe's edits, he did seem to be making genuine contributions, but also removing things that shouldn't have been removed. I'd suggest replacing them, with an appropriate edit comment. If it's removed again without explanation or attempt at compromise, it's time for a polite note on the talk page, or their user talk page... Remember to assume good faith - always give an editor an extra chance to do the right thing. Quite often we get a pleasant surprise, in my experience.

Sorry I can't help more right now - I've bitten off more than I can chew in some of the things I'm doing. But please keep me updated, especially if it isn't quickly resolved. --Singkong2005 (t - c - WPID) 17:52, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that Flexme, 211.29.251.198, 211.29.250.59, 211.29.250.61 and 211.29.251.98 are all one and the same person: IP addresses 211.28.0.0 - 211.31.255.255 all resolve to OPTUSnet
Anyway, thank you for your kind advice; I will let this rest for a couple of days and take it from there. JdH 19:27, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SingKong ... this issue of quoting sources giving reliablilty of information ... it seems sensible at first ... yet it is wildly out of control ... check out the comment on the updraft page where it is said to be an expensive way to produce windpower (it might be expensive , but this is NOT the way to show it) ... this is simply a website quoting the media who quote someone's offhand comment - possibly out of context ... this is not reliable! Or another ... the floating chimney, as jdh saw it was totally misguided (though it may start a similar but sensible design in sci fi novels) Similarly, if i was to "publish" my results of my analysis that is at present on my talk page and in the tower discussion page on ANY other website, even on my own yahoo freesite, then my results would suddenly become verifiable!!!!!! this is out of control. i read wikipedia a lot and find it a wonderful source of info, i had no idea about this shambles behind the scenes. when i first started editting i assumed that wikipedia itself was a nice central location to bring my ideas so they could be verified in some sense, but it seems that if you feel you know something then in fact you are best off going ANYWHERE other than wikipedia!? bizzarre!--Flexme 10:53, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please post link to changes[edit]

The user Essene, (talk), a.k.a. H. Alfred Goolsbee,[1] has posted un-civil messages in this section (archived here), making accusations of defamation (regarding something written by another user) and threatening legal action. In spite of my prompt responses on his talk page, and my offers of cooperation in spite of his rudeness, he has even posted these legal threats on my blog, which I consider harrassment. He has, however, failed to respond to requests to clarify what he regards as defamation.

While I do not believe the threats had any basis, I have made very slight changes to JdH's post to remove any doubt. I have simply made it clear that the comments about Proton44 (a sockpuppet of Essene, or vice-versa?[2]) are simply opinion, which is legally protected as free speech. Readers are welcome to draw their own conclusions.

If Essene had approached this in a more civil manner, in the Wikipedian spirit, he most likely would have achieved a much more favorable outcome.

  1. ^ Essene identifies himself as H. Alfred Goolsbee, and the email address for Goolsbee at this website is the same as that given in his legal threats.
  2. ^ Proton44's contributions and Essene's contributions reflect similar interests, so I'm guessing they're sockpuppets - not that that's forbidden, but it's good to be clear.

--Chriswaterguy talk 05:29, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, there is a Wiki policy against Forbidden uses of sock puppets, and what Essene is doing here may qualify as such. JdH 17:01, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To JdH: I read your reply on the mediation page. Your suggestions seem reasonable - my only comment is that you do seem quite aggrieved... While it's understandable that we get annoyed at other editors, it is important to assume good faith and be as civil as possible. Still, things certainly seem to have improved a lot, so I think mediation was a very good idea. -- Singkong2005 tc 01:43, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you are right: my trigger level was/is set quite low. The reason for that is that "Solar updraft tower" has a very torturous history; you may want to check out previous discussions about that, see Question about this article and Self-promotion?. Basically, the first version of this article was written by Proton44, who identified himself as H. Alfred Goolsbee. Goolsbee is very much involved in promoting the Solar Tower®, and he actually owns that trademark. For his role in all of this you may want to check out this and this press release. My opinion of what Goolsbee was trying to do is that he was (ab)using Wikipedia for promoting his stuff; if that's what he was doing, it is considered spam and it against Wikipedia policy. So when Flexme started to remove material that was even remotely critical of the Solar Tower® I lost my temper. My apologies for that. JdH 18:30, 17 July 2006 (UTC) Slight changes made to wording, as mentioned above. --Chriswaterguy talk 05:29, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know that I added a comment to Proposal to make Solar tower a disambiguation page on the Talk:Solar tower page, because I thought that my comment was more relevant there. cheers JdH 14:17, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Urbepedia invitation[edit]

Dear Chris

my name is Meutia Chaerani from Singapore. I volunteered helped out in the Urbepedia at Urbepedia. It is a newly set up wiki focusing on Urban issues, and currently needing more contributors. I'd like to invite your participation in the wiki. Also need to brainstorm more on how the Urbepedia can be different yet complementing to information already existing in Wikipedia.

At this stage, i'm thinking that Urbepedia would be more detailed and more technical, and also acts as repository of best urban practices from around the world, as well as repository of contact information of urban experts. Whereas wikipedia is aimed for a broader audience, the article should be easy to grasp to different kind of people, from kids to adults. In that sense, urbepedia is different from wikipedia, but of course, we can link both wikipedia and urbepedia together in the article page.

We hope that you'd be interested to get involved.

Category:Water quality measures?[edit]

I think there should be a category for water quality measures such as Suspended solids, Total suspended solids, Biochemical oxygen demand and dissolved oxygen. Can you think of a better name than Category:Water quality measures? --Singkong2005 talk

I agree it seems like a good idea. I think water quality measures sounds fine as it is logical and descriptive. I can't think of anything conciser at this stage. --Alex 08:02, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am thinking of things that need to be included or articles that need creation:

Initially spring to mind--Alex 10:32, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think regarding nitrate, nitrite, phosphate concentrations etc? The wikilink to each of these will give you the chemical properties, not necessarily the effects of them on aquatic environments and ecosystems. --Alex 11:08, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure, but I'm inclined to add the category tag to any article on a substance or indicator that discusses its use as an indicator. I've added it to Nitrate for this reason (see Nitrate#Effects on aquatic life). The other articles don't mention theor use as indicators, so perhaps they should be expanded first. Water quality mentions various indicators, so I added the tag to that article too.

There are certain indicators which are very standard (esp. fecal coliforms) but many more which potentially could be used. I haven't done a lot of study on this, so I'm not sure where we draw the line. I suppose we just include anything that is notable as an indicator. Arsenic would qualify in Bangladesh, but I'm not sure which article is most suitable - Arsenic contamination of groundwater seems more relevant than Arsenic or Arsenic poisoning, but isn't about arsenic as a water quality indicator. --Singkong2005 talk 15:05, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Arsenic is an important factor in analysing water as are other heavy metals. It is quite expensive to test for individual heavy metals and require the use of OES (optical emission spectroscopy) or AES (atomic emission spectroscopy), or x-ray fluorescence. Usual proceedure is to use conductivity as a measure of ions in the water. There is also the relationship between acidity and increased heavy metal dilution in the case of acid mine tailings.--Alex 15:17, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. Would this be a reliable way of ensuring that toxic metals are at or below a safe level? Definitely not where there is a salinity issue, but it seems from the following quotes that arsenic levels are much lower than salinity levels even in fresh water: The World Health Organization recommends a limit of 0.01 mg/L (i.e. 0.001%) of arsenic in drinking water (from Arsenic poisoning); and The actual amount of salt in fresh water is, by definition, less than 0.05%. (from Salinity).
I realize that conductivity is not directly proportional to salinity in g/L or percentage, but I'm assuming that there is a reasonably strong relationship, and this would imply that conductivity is not very helpful as an indicator of danger from arsenic or other metals.
It would be great to have info on this at Electrical conductivity. --Singkong2005 talk 15:35, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It starts to get technical here. Different substances are toxic in different levels. The mechanisms by which heavy metals are toxic are different to the mechanisms that make salinity toxic. Heavy metals have adverse effects on cells and can bioaccumulate. Cadmium and mercury are some of the more toxic heavy metals. Aluminium is debatably less toxic. Salt concentrations have effects on osmosis in cells - relating to diffusion of water across a membrane. The international standards for toxicity are Dutch and give a good outline. I think they are called the Dutch Standard or something similar.
Conductivity will relate to the charge on ions in the waterway, and I am not an expert on this subject so I am probably not best placed to write an article on this. --Alex 15:57, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note: I created Category:Water quality indicators on 3 October 2006.

iPod Shuffle[edit]

In response to your question on the iPod Shuffle talk page you can use this amazing, small, fast and FREE(!) program:

http://agoraphobeus.free.fr/iShuffle/index.html

You put the program into your Shuffle's root directory. Next, you create a folder named 'Music'. Transfer your song(s) to the Music folder via windows explorer or other similiar means. Then, you run the .exe and thenyou're done! Doesn't read MP4 files though. From what I remember you do not need to initialize the Shuffle with iTunes. Energy portal & future selected articles[edit]

Hi! Over the past couple of months I've been spending much more time than I should developing the Energy portal, and intend asking for a portal peer review within the next day or so.

The portal provides a showcase for energy-related articles on Wikipedia. One of the most prominent ways is via a the selected article that is currently changed every 6 weeks or so. It would be good to increase this turnover, and with three Wikiprojects dedicated to energy-related topics and a good number of articles already written, I'd like to suggest that members of each Wikiproject might like to use the 'selected article' to feature some of their best work.

With this in mind, I'd like to suggest that your Wikiproject bypasses the normal selected article nomination page and decides collectively which articles are worth featuring - or these may be self-evident from previous discussions (or from here) - and add short 'introduction' to the selected article at the appropriate place on page Portal:Energy/Selected article/Drafts, which includes further information. Your personal involvement would be welcome!

Please make any comments on your Wikiproject talk page, my talk page, or on Portal talk:Energy/Selected article/Drafts, as appropriate. Gralo 15:54, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would now like the article to be considered for featured article status. I have nominated the article for consideration as a featured article. Please take a minute to look at this here Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/Anaerobic_digestion leaving feedback and suggestions for improvement where relevant. Many thanks --Alex 12:42, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pre-Meiji Period: Use of Japanese era name in identifying disastrous events[edit]

Would you consider making a contribution to an exchange of views at either of the following:

As you know, Wikipedia:WikiProject Disaster management came up with entirely reasonable guidelines for naming articles about earthquakes, fires, typhoons, etc. However, the <<year>><<place> <<event>> format leaves no opportunity for conventional nengō which have been used in Japan since the eighth century (701-1945) -- as in "the Great Fire of Meireki" (1657) or for "the Hōei eruption of Mount Fuji" (1707).

In a purely intellectual sense, I do look forward to discovering how this exchange of views will develop; but I also have an ulterior motive. I hope to learn something about how better to argue in favor of a non-standard exception to conventional, consensus-driven, and ordinarily helpful wiki-standards such as this one. In my view, there does need to be some modest variation in the conventional paradigms for historical terms which have evolved in non-Western cultures -- no less in Wikipedia than elsewhere. I'm persuaded that, at least in the context of Japanese history before the reign of Emperor Meiji (1868-1912), some non-standard variations seem essential; but I'm not sure how best to present my reasoning to those who don't already agree with me. I know these first steps are inevitably awkward; but there you have it.

The newly-created 1703 Genroku earthquake article pushed just the right buttons for me. Obviously, these are questions that I'd been pondering for some time; and this became a convenient opportunity to move forward in a process of building a new kind of evolving consensus. --Ooperhoofd (talk) 18:26, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Water well[edit]

An editor has nominated Water well, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Water well and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 22:44, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comment from Jeffalbert[edit]

Chris-

Greetings, and my apologies for taking months to respond. as you can see, i am a Wikineophyte - and amazingly, i did not see your message of May 1 until just now.

In any case, yes, i do intend to continue to update Appropriate Technology/Water Treatment, particularly to add more material on community-level treatment systems, health consequences of various interventions, etc.

Thanks for reaching out several months ago (and nice work with Appropedia!)

Your warning to me about the vandalism tag[edit]

I am familiar with WP:AGF and used the term vandalism quite deliberately. To quote WP:Vandalism: "Continuing to add external links to non-notable or irrelevant sites (e.g. to advertise one's website) to pages after having been warned is vandalism." I have warned the user twice, although they have done added the link several times to various articles. Review User:Sreejiagriman contributions if this is unclear. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 02:28, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your concerns about newbies and templates are valid, but I had previously given a non-template warning to this user here. I chose the vandalism template for the next warning because WP:Vandalism is where the relevant policy is found. I'm not sure how much more it makes sense to do, given that they seem to have ignored all warnings thus far. Oh well. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 16:30, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

G'day[edit]

G'day esteemed person who has expressed interest in Sydney based meetups at this page (I hope that's the correct wording for the formal greeting!!). You may have heard that Australia is to have its very own 'chapter' of the Wikimedia Foundation - and further, there's a meeting coming up to discuss / enact the chapter's incorporation (details here). I'm afraid that I don't know too much about the details of what this entails, other than having a private hope that we might get a secret handshake, and maybe cheap coffee at wikimania (this is a poor attempt at humour - I'm sure that the Chapter's do great work, and it's a good thing that Australia is to have one).

If you're interested in meeting up this weekend (the set date is the 20th) - or later, then please do head over here and sign up, or make a comment at the talk page... the drive to create the chapter has largely come from another town in Australia that I'm afraid I haven't actually heard much about.. and anything they can do.... right? - cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 11:11, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hippo Water Roller Page Work[edit]

Chris -

Thanks for the "welcome" earlier this month.

I've done some work on the Hippo Water Roller Page.

  • Restructuring with headings
  • Addition of African Water Supply content
  • Notes and References
  • Also see the discussion page for my status with a photo search.

I'd like to your input in refining my restructuring / references to obtain a uniform stub.

Also any thoughts on the addition of African Water Supply content. By no means is it comprehensive, I wanted to get some information down to start.

Roccasecca (talk) 01:21, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like a good stub now. My only suggestions are:
  • Be aware that citations are needed in Wikipedia. If you can't find the citations for what you want to write but think they probably exist (in acceptable sources), you can use the {{fact}} tag. If it's good content but not likely to have references, consider putting it at Appropedia instead.
  • Link the African water supply section to a relevant page - Water crisis or something more specific.
  • "African water supply" is an example of a topic that could be explored more freely at Appropedia - though if there are sources, there's no fundamental reason not to have pages on both Wikipedia and Appropedia on the same topic, with different kinds of content.
Minor point: on Wikipedia, the style is "African water supply" rather than "African Water Supply".
Keep up the good work! --

Your Thoughts[edit]

Chris - Taking a step back and looking at what the Wikipedia community at large wants from its contributors, how do you think the Hippo water roller stub can be expanded with the ultimate goal of "featured article" in mind? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Roccasecca (talkcontribs) 02:45, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yikes - tough one.
I see my role as more one of throwing useful stuff together, as well as encouraging others to contribute. I then hope that someone will tidy it. But am not too fussed if it stays messy, as long as it's functional. Yes, I'm an engineer.
My initial thought is that the Hippo water roller is just not a very big topic, and its ideal length may only be a few paragraphs. It's already a very useful page for anyone wanting information on it. For a more helpful response, perhaps ask at the :WikiProject League of Copyeditors or ask a WikiFairy. Also think whether you particularly want to focus on this, or if another International development stub would be benefit more from the work. All these are suggestions only
Sorry I can't be more help. Don't hesitate to ask further. --Chriswaterguy talk 13:25, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just had a closer look... you've been doing a lot of good work. 2 things to look at:
  • the refs need to be a link, so <ref>[http://changemakers.net/foo Change Makers]</ref> rather than <ref>Change Makers</ref> - where http://changemakers.net/foo is the specific page that mentions the information you are referencing.
  • look for directly relevant statistics. Rather than the population of Africa, look for something like the number of people (in the world, or Africa or wherever) who live more than x distance from their water source.
Cheers, --Chriswaterguy talk 13:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting help[edit]

Hi White Cat - good to meet you in Egypt, so long after you helped me out with my user page.

I was thinking how badly we (at Appropedia) need someone with formatting skills, for Appropedia:Main Page tests. I'd really appreciate any help if you're able:

  • fixing up the columns to make them more level (the announcements on the left drop down for some reason) and/or
  • rearranging the entire page - basically we'd appreciate any ideas on what will look better.

Up to you[edit]

The conversation between you two is obviously your problem and probably should be off wiki by the look of it - I would genuinely assume agf every time when offering comment about articles - the over reaction was quite unnecessary - and as for the problem of English Wikipedia Indonesia project articles - there is no sign that the original issue had been addressed - there are many articles in the project that leave the average english reader in complete mystery as to what has been written SatuSuro 06:57, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure why you feel compelled to comment on our conversation. I have said things to Serenity about the way she communicates (and as a friend I tell her quite bluntly) but on-wiki or off-wiki is not really your domain to be judging, especially as you seem to have a chip on your shoulder regarding Serenity.
Your original issue, which appeared to be a broad attack on the English skills of a non-native speaker, is best dealt with another way. A wiki is a collaborative effort. If you wish to collaborate, I welcome your messages. If you cannot be constructive in relation to a particular editor, I suggest you move on, cease the comments in relation to that editor, and edit elsewhere. If you wish to be constructive, then so much the better. --Chriswaterguy talk 17:08, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you are reading into some simple talk messages this level - I suggest you chill out yourself. I had no broad attack on serenity, let alone any chip on the shoulder, nor do I have any form of grudge against the person, or for that matter any non native english speakers. I have already apologised and consider the matter closed and have little or no interest in the articles about Revo or Indonesia Wikipedia for the moment.

You seem to be increasingly misintepreting me. Check your misinterpretations (you are reading too much into things that are not there) and I will be prepared to explain the very serious issues that are facing the English Wikipedia Wikiproject Indonesia which have little or nothing to do with constructive, criticism, collaboration. They are far more comprehensively credibility issues of the whole project that require considerably tougher decisions that having to cope with being misinterpreted SatuSuro 04:21, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, I've replied to your comment on SatuSuro's talk page. Orderinchaos 05:48, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Orderinchaos: Thanks for your comment - I replied there also.
SatuSoro: I don't see any misinterpretation, though I guess I might be making the all-too-common mistake of thinking I've understood someone's intent in a purely text-based medium. If you didn't intend to make a broad attack, then more careful choice of words would be helpful in future - it didn't look like a friendly note to me. If you & Serenity have both apologized then that's good - happy to let it drop. --Chriswaterguy talk 16:00, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Misattributed Orwell quote During times of universal deceit etc.[edit]

It seems that all bar two of the misattributions on http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/George_Orwell have some explanation of their having been mixed up versions of real quotes, just not the last two, including the one about times of universal deceit and all its variants.

Did Charles Walker just make it up when he quoted it in "My Few Wise Words of Wisdom" (2000) or did he pick up a modified version of a real one somewhere?

Done, I think; see [8]. It was easiest, in this case, for me to just make changes using a bit of AWB and some manual edits. A lot of the connections were actually from Template:Washington Radio, which I also changed - but it may be several hours before the system updates What Links Here to reflect that (templated links get updated via a job queue).
I hope all is OK; if you need more, just use another {{helpme}}. Thanks. Chzz  ►  11:06, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Archive[edit]

While I was here, I notice this user talk page is a bit long; it is possible to set it to automatically put things older than 'x' days into an archive file, if you want. And have a link to 'archives' at the top. The page is not that busy, so maybe just 90 days (ie 3 months), or 30 days (1 month) might be good.

If you want me to set that up, just let me know (here), and how many days, and I will add the code for it. (If you don't, that' absolutely fine!)  Chzz  ►  11:15, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting - didn't know about that. I'll leave it for now, though - I'm planning to do a manual cull, and see if there's anything important I've missed. I'll let you know if I want to take up your kind offer - thanks again! --Chriswaterguy talk 12:51, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, no worries, give me a shout any time. Or, you can always just do it yourself; it's not rocket science - User:ClueBot_III#How to archive your page. I usually just set it up for people and then explain, just 'coz it is a little bit fiddly, and it's quicker to do than to say!
Anyway - my talk page is always open. Keep up the good stuff, cheers,  Chzz  ►  20:47, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting an article proposal[edit]

Dear Chris,

My name is Mike, and I am the new International Marketing Manager for Unichal, a small technology company based in Seoul, South Korea.

I am the only foreigner/English native speaker working for them now, and they are struggling getting the word out about their company and products.

Unichal is the creator of the 1-Click Dictionary DIXAU. It is a device that you can place over a word in a book, magazine, etc, then have the word defintion given, or have it translated. The device was referred to in only one Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_translation

Could you please write an article about Unichal, just giving some basic facts of the company and the products we offer? I am emailing you specifically because I have a great respect for the Wiki Community, in that I have a definite conflict of interest as outlined but the website, and understand third-party sources other than myself should write the article.

If you do not have the time to write the article, you are welcome to pass it on to others or create a WikiProject related to it. I know that is company and its products will be making waves in the near future, and it doesn't make sense that it doesn't exist in Wikipedia.

Please advise,

Mike Username: Unichal — Preceding unsigned comment added by Unichal (talkcontribs) 08:11, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Misspellings - a job for a bot?[edit]

From a site search, I notice that there are 51 occurrences of "earthern", which is (presumably in all cases) a misspelling of earthen. I know there are bots that make such corrections - is there somewhere I should suggest this correction? Or can someone do it with WP:AWB? --Chriswaterguy talk 09:42, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

gday, some individuals do it by manual adjusts - some use awb - I am not sure if any bots that do it, do it anymore SatuSuro 09:45, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You could post about it at Wikipedia talk:Typo Team. It's dangerous to make spelling corrections automatically because some cases should not be changed - for instance, if the word occurs in a direct quotation, or if it occurs in a link where "correcting" the spelling would break the link. It really needs a human intelligence to look at each instance. JohnCD (talk) 10:01, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Until I got to "Alpha Centauri" and "SF convention" I had no idea what you were talking about, and thought it was one of those odd comments like you see on blogs these days... but then I remembered the thread and it all made sense. :-) --Chriswaterguy talk 02:24, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The real mixed marriage is that between a fan and a mundane. I met Cicatrice at a con (she says I called her fanzine a "crudzine", but I don't remember it, just her), married her at a con a few years later (1981), with the ceremony performed by a member of Madison fandom who was an ex-roommate of Harlan Ellison's, and also happened to be my bishop. Next January, best we can figure, will be our 16-year-old daughter's 72nd con. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:46, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's pretty hardcore. With the exception of a few books in primary school, then Douglas Adams in high school, I only discovered SF reading more seriously as an adult,, thanks to a friend with a respectable set of bookshelves of SF and haven't actually been to a con. (Have been in SE Asia a lot in recent years - never heard of an SF con there). Must go when I get a chance.
I love "Lord of Light" and "The Mote in God's Eye" in particular, and the 2005-ish Battlestar Galactica. Wonderful stuff. --Chriswaterguy talk 12:27, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know of any SF conventions in SE Asia. There are regular cons in Australia, an annual National Convention in NZ, and of course some in Japan; but that's about it. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:50, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I am very new to Wikipedia. I am with Global Humanitarian Technology Conference and created a page for it a week ago. I tried to see if it comes in search putting GHTC and then the name of the conference but it did not come out. Would appretiate any help in making our page better and searchable. Thx. Wrong email address used on Wilderness.org.au ?[edit]

Hi Chris,

Could it be you filled in the wrong domain extention when providing your email address to received emails from the Wilderness.org.au list? I own the domainname "http://rootsofchange.net/" and you filled in as your email address <chris@rootsofchange.net>. Hence I received your email. Maybe it should have been <chris@rootsofchange.org> or <chris@rootsofchange.au> or <chris@rootsofchange.com> ? I've made this kind of mistake in the past as well.

I didn't alter your details on the Wilderness.org.au website, which I could access via a link in the email sent to me/you.

Hope this message reaches you now.

All the best and keep up the good work.

Ibrahim London, UK

Hi Ibrahim/@Tarpal: thanks. I used to have the email address chris@rootsofchange.net from about 1999 to 2005, but I let it lapse. My plans to do something with the domain never came to anything. Amazing that it's still subscribed to something! Feel free to cancel the subscription.
The hopes I had for a "Roots of Change" site ended up being fulfilled somewhat by Wikipedia and Appropedia. I'm happy to see that someone else has thought of those same words to inspire change! Really nice (and intriguing) to get your message. --Chriswaterguy talk 11:31, 23 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris, Amazing indeed how it went with the domain name rootsofchange.net. Can't remember when I registered it but actually only recently started to use it as I am fading out another site. Before rootsofchange.net used to forward to nomadtribe.net but now it will gradually take over. Maybe later I swap the contents between the sites. Quite a game. Takes a lot of time. Actually abandoning some domain names up for expiry now but a couple, though for now only used as forwarders, I like to keep as long as costs permit. Their names are good finds IMO. Web building (and Internet presence in general) takes a lot of time. Still, some information on one of my ancient and sort of abandoned website still finds readers while what I wrote on my (now willingly disabled) Facebook page has sunk in a pool only accessible by marketing and government surveillance agencies.

Got another story: came on a sailing site across the domainname radicalsailors.org . The site didn't exist so... I bought it :-) Next a guy ends via the sailing site up on my site and next on my boat. We're still in contact. Then I find out the creation of "a website to promote activism afloat" had been discussed years before on some meeting or radicals. I found the guy in Belgium who launched the idea but who didn't have an idea someone had actually done something with the idea. Haven't figured out why the sailing school had put the (then dead) link on their website, claiming they were part of the Radical Sailors Network. Well, in the end it already got us somewhere.

I did log into your Wilderness.org.au account using the link the site sent me and disabled the newsletter subscription. Didn't alter the (unknown to me) password so if you want you can update your email address there.

All the best and take good care. Ibrahim — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tarpal (talkcontribs) 02:36, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
