Purpose[edit]
I've been meaning to write this for a while, so it's probably time to at least start the process. This is aimed as a general introduction to Wikipedia for academics, covering what they need to know to be an effective part of the community, and what they should expect to encounter. Academics, in this case, are assumed to differ from subject-matter experts, as the latter may have expetise in an area, but will not neccessarily have the same skills and requirements as academics. For example, academics may wish to conduct research on Wikipedia or use it for teaching, and they bring with them generic research skills that may not be the case in subject-matter experts. Anyway, I'll expand this over time, and see if in the end it will be a useful essay. If anyone stops by, feel free to play. :) - Bilby (talk) 01:32, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
