Introduction for COM 482[edit]

Hi Mako! I realized my initial introduction was pretty insufficient immediately after posting it so this is my edit. Hello![edit]

Hi Benjamin!

My name is Avery McClanahan and I am a senior this year. I am majoring in communications and minoring in diversity. Lots of people don't know that diversity is a minor at UW so I always like to tell people about it because it is really cool and interesting. The classes are about anything and everything and have expanded my mind in so many ways. I am originally from Austin, Texas (a city i love dearly) but UW was my dream school for as long as I can remember. Looking forward to taking this course and learning more about how the current media influences our communication.

Introduction![edit]

Hi Benjamin!

My name is Marisa Jones and I am currently a senior at the University of Washington studying communications and pursuing a sales certificate from the Foster School of Business. I wanted to reach out and introduce myself as I am in your COM 482 lecture this quarter. I am very excited to learn more about interpersonal media and Wikipedia as a whole this quarter. I am a very people oriented person that loves social interaction so this class is very unlike anything I have ever taken so I am looking forward to getting outside my comfort zone by getting to know more about the media world. I hope everything is well with you during this crazy time and I can't wait to learn more this quarter!

Best, Marisa Jones — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marisajones (talkcontribs) 19:39, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Marisajones: Hilariously, I also signed my response to you incorrectly. I guess just more evidence for the point that this stuff really is difficult! —mako 20:17, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Change in Assigned Wikipedia Article[edit]

Hello Professor Hill! This is Paul and I just wanted to reach out to give you a heads up that I am planning on changing my Wikipedia article from "Digimon Rumble Arena" to "Rascal the Racoon." I feel that the original article I chose had too little information about it given how outdated the game is. PaulSereeyothin (talk) 12:50, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@PaulSereeyothin: I responded over on your talk page. —mako 20:48, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page versus User Talk page[edit]

@Fronado, PaulSereeyothin, AveryMcC, and Marisajones: You four all left messages for me over on Talk:Benjamin Mako Hill rather than on User talk:Benjamin Mako Hill (i.e., this page). The first is the talk page for the article Benjamin Mako Hill which is the biography that other Wikipedians have written about me. That talk page is for talking about the biography. This page is my user talk page which is basically my inbox.

I went ahead and just copied and pasted those message over from the other page to this page so we should be fine. In the future, this is something to keep in mind. I know it's confusing! —mako 20:44, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Com 482 Introduction Olivia[edit]

Hello Professor Mako! my name is Olivia and I am a senior at UW majoring in Communication as well as Cinema and Media Studies. I am also minoring in Digital Arts. I really enjoy Facebook as it has allowed me to connect to various people of my past and because it is an older form of social media people in generations before me seem to have an easier time with it. I am involved in several niche Facebook groups that have connected me with people who are involved with the Seattle music scene and have started to do outdoor concerts during the pandemic. The only way I would know about these concerts is through Facebook. I am interested in taking this class because online communities and interaction is the future of social interaction and today more than ever we are using it as we can't interact safely in person the way we can online today. Hi Mako! I apologize for the late post for Assignment #2. I'm Toshie Araki and a Senior majoring in Communications and minoring in Entrepreneurship. In my spare time, at least recently, I enjoy the weekend backpacking and camping trips with my friends. I recently purchased a canoe, and so hoping to get a chance to use it with my roommate and her dog despite the weather changing. I'm excited to get involved in Wikipedia! Hopefully, I get the knack of it soon as it is currently a bit confusing. All the tutorials and resources though are very helpful. Article Changes[edit]

Hi Mako, I saw your message on my talk page. I was wondering to respond to your message, I would reply on here or is it on my own talk page? As for article change, I wasn't aware of the regional street food page. Thank you for pointing that out for me, I will be transferring all my new addition to the new article and checking my grammar. Also, I added some images, I wasn't sure if I violated any copyright or not. Iriszhou99 (talk) 20:09, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Iriszhou99: Either one is fine. I would personally add it to your talk page so we have the thread in one place. If you just say {{ping|Benjamin Mako Hill}} then I will get a notification. —mako 20:37, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Iriszhou99: In terms of the image, it probably is a copyright violation if the article is not released freely. Generally speaking, the rule is to not upload any image unless you are the copyright holder (i.e., you took the picture). Is that the case here? As I said in class, please don't upload an image unless you carefully read the material on WikiEd and/or check with me about the specific image and situation first. —mako 20:39, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Benjamin Mako Hill: I ping you on my current sandbox page, but I'm not sure if I did it right or if you got the message from there. Iriszhou99 (talk) 21:22, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on "Rascal the Raccoon"[edit]

Hello Professor Hill! First of all, thank you for your constructive feedback on my talk page about the article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:PaulSereeyothin/Rascal_the_Raccoon). In regards to that, I have made some changes to cater the topic more towards being more about Rascal rather than raccoons in general. Specifically, I added an intro paragraph in the "impact" section and mentioning Rascal as an "invasive species" so that the following info about the raccoon impacts all point toward Rascal (as an anime) as being the cause. Additionally, I shortened the leading section and made the content more about breadth instead of depth. I will go head and start moving the content to the live article!

PaulSereeyothin (talk) 10:08, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@PaulSereeyothin: These are good improvements. I've made a quick editing pass of the article and removed a little move, moved a little bit, and edited quite a bit. I think this is good to go. Please start moving it over to the live version of the article. —mako 18:59, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the demo on how to send messages in Wikipedia! This has been really helpful + a good demonstration for people with different learning preferences & needs. I'm looking forward to all we'll learn this quarter.

Thanks again! Amanda Arboyle (talk) 01:39, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
