Speedy Delete

Wikipedia, by and large, is a dictionary. Maybe the rule should be restricted to one liners and non linkers but regardless, the disscusions in favour of change to this directive are extensive, well written, and ignored for years ie: no answers, deaf ears. This is contrary to WP:PNSD which is much more important than WP:DICT. If the debate was open the policy would be fair. The debate is not entered into. Admin v Opinion. Instead it is a dictatorship policy. Some of the suggestions for change are very considerable. Any project not open to intelligent debate (for several years I may add) should be up for speedy deletion.
Sincerely
ThisMunkey (talk) 09:31, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

  • I should clarify "by and large" includes a dictionary. Regardless, my speedy delete got an immediate response. Why have the dabates entered into recieved little or no response?
    ThisMunkey (talk) 11:06, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
As it turns out I got a good answer and would now point out that Wikipedia makes it very easy to include tags for Wiktionary (as good as including the dictionary, serving any intents or purposes) BUT! this info is sorely missed from pages such as Wikipedia:Your first article or Wiktionary. Thankyou

of Header edits and underconstruction notices...

Thanks Bencherlite! I noticed that you did a header change to the clock page to make if conform to some spec... I was not able to figure out what it was you did and the link to that WO:MOS page seems to just contain Gibberish. Did someone vandalize that page? also... can I, or should I remove the {{under construction}} header from the Dreger Clock Site when I am done adding the main materials? or does someone else have to remove it? Bencherlite...I am currently in the process of writing a user box for all of the colleges that are part of Oxbridge. This template is meant to replace your current college template. Please take a look at the work in progress and comment on it. My main concerns are college abbreviations and color choice. I am using scarf colors for the colleges. Detachable Penis

I believe that article should have just had a few sources added, not been deleted. With almost 200k google hits, 25k of them with the correct band name, and 11 mentions in wikipedia, it is totally notable. How do I propose undeletion? Akb4 (talk) 21:54, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

undelete

Thanks for the undelete! I've added a refs section with links to the lyrics, video, and the "all music guide" descriptions of the band and album, and I've removed the tags from the article. Please let me know if you think there are still critical problems with the article. -- Akb4 (talk) 07:03, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

British barrister cat

You asked for my view on the above cat, which is (1) that because there is no such thing as the British bar, it looks very inaccurate when applied to an individual article, and (2) it appears to run counter to the general way of things, which is to delete a more general over-category once a more accurate sub-cat is in place, as is the case with "British barristers" and "Members of X Inn". I understand your point about how it feeds into other cats, but it is very creaky. If it is not possible to get where you want by another route, then, at the very least, more annotation is needed on the cat pages to make it clear how these cats are supposed to work together: otherwise somebody is likely to do the same thing in 6 months. BoxCount | Talk 14:25, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes, thanks, I have already understood your point! I am pointing out that the expression "British barrister" is prone to misinterpretation: if it is to be limited to the meaning of " a barrister of British nationality", there must be a clear explanation on the cat page that that is all it means, as otherwise - as it did to me -it will look as though it is supposed to mean "Member of the British bar", which would of course be a nonsense calling for correction. Some clarifying notes are needed in the approporiate places (though I suspect you will still find that the cat is removed from time to time by people who (a) read it as implying a "British bar" and/or (b) assume that it is a superfluous over-cat to one or the other of the Inns). BoxCount | Talk 15:02, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
(after a bit more thought) Perhaps this would all work better with some addl cats to keep the nationalities and the qualifications more clearly separate - (eg) if the "Members of X Inn" cats were subcats, not of Category:English barristersCategory:British barristers, but of Category:Members of the English barCategory:English barCategory:English law? (+ sth similar for the Scots, N Irish etc; and maybe sth parallel wd also work for solicitors?). Otherwise it's not easy to keep the useful distinction you point to betw Brits/English people who are barristers but not necessarily of the English bar, and barristers of the English bar who are not necessarily English/British, because they get muddled up at the "Cat:English barrister" and "Cat:British barrister" levels. If you think this wd work I'm happy to take on the labour.BoxCount | Talk 01:06, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

David Underdown (talk) 20:05, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
It is usually possible to track down the honours lists by doing a search for "graciously pleased" and restricting it to a date range, I usually try searching between 25 December and 6 January for New Year lists (rembering of course to make December a year earlier than you're actually looking for), and something like 25 May to 25 June for Birthday Honours, all this assumes that you know the year the honour was awarded, which obits and son on don't always give. a new article for DYK

Hello, Bencherlite, there is a new article on a Chinese athlete Jin Jing. We want to push this article onto the "Did you know" on the main page. DYK - Hollywood Canteen (1944 film)

Thanks for reviewing the Hollywood Canteen (1944 film) for DYK. I guess I don't understand the rationale for not including the list of guest stars in the character count. If I understand the DYK rules (I have to admit I am still learning), there woudl be no question of including them in the character count if they were included in text. Samnite gladiators

Hi Bencherlite, I notice you promoted this one in spite of my leaving a query on it. I have no objection to that, but perhaps I should have better explained why I queried it.

Basically, the hook says "that the Samnite gladiator type likely went out of fashion in Ancient Rome when the people of Samnium, whom it was intended to mock, became assimilated into the Roman Empire?" I could see no reference in the article for the claim that Samnite gladiators were "intended to mock" the Samnite people. The hook in effect is making an unsubstantiated claim about "mockery" of Samnites going out of favour after they became assimilated.

As I see the update has now been posted, I still think this is a problem, and that the unreferenced phrase, along with the word "likely" should be deleted (since the article itself doesn't equivocate on this point). Regards, Gatoclass (talk) 05:40, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

On reflection, I think I'll strike that. The article does reference the games as a "mocking milieu" so arguably that supports the hook (albeit somewhat tangentially). When I put the update together last night, it was late at night, the update was overdue, and I had already scored several "dud" hooks in a row and was getting a bit frustrated by the time I got to this one, so when I couldn't readily confirm it I just left a query and went on to the next. I'm still a tad uncomfortable about the hook but not enough to make a fuss over it at this stage. Gatoclass (talk) 05:54, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Wales

Greetings Wales community! We need your Voice! We need mediation and impute from the wider community who regularily contribute to articals of Wales interest. At issue is the use of a distinctive border around the country info box, as well title bar. The issue seems to have become a crusade against Wales by certin editors, who have almost never contributed to and practically never visit (by their own admission) the Wales page. I do not tust the motives of the editor, whome seems to be stalking my edits and reverting them purposefully. This editor even dismisses the colors of Wales red and green saying that Wales does not have any official colors! (quote: "I imagine that this use of "national colours" (of which Wales has none by custom or tradition)...", Unfortunatly, I must deal with these cyber bullying tactics if I am to contribute here. However, I implore the Wales commmunity to weigh in on the topic of allowing info box borders and title headers. Please submit views on Template talk:Infobox Country and talk:Wales. If the wider Wales community decides not to support a border and title header color in the colors of Wales then I will withdrawal from this position. However, I and other editors do feel it makes the Wales page far more distinctive. Sincerly, David Llewellyn♦Drachenfyre♦·Talk 02:30, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

I know that in cyberspacve there is no way of proving this, but believe me when I say that it was my contribution all alongh. That said, you being the accomplished Wikipedian that you are have provided for a much more professional layout. So again, diolch. When I will have a spare moment I intend to give a more detailed analysis and lity. crit. of my father's life and works in both languages. Thanks for stopping the edit war on the above page, I was hoping someone would step in —Preceding unsigned comment added by Snowded (talkcontribs) 21:18, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Personally I'm not happy that a 3-day page lock has been put on the article because of just two people edit warring. It's scuppered my edit plans. Why should the article suffer? Why should I? I thought the idea was to go after the people edit warring - not the article! I don't get it. It's like someone being naughty and the whole class getting detention. I've got a good mind to hand you a letter from my folks! Seriously - is this fair?--Matt Lewis (talk) 01:10, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
Its difficult when someone refused to engage in discussion after two invitations to take part in a talk Matt. I don;t think there was any choice. Bencherlite - I don't know if you are monitoring the activity but I attempted to summarise (as objectively as I could) the current position (and "voting" strength) on the talk page this evening. Given previous history I would not expect the majority vote to be accepted and anticipate another bout of edit wars when protection is removed. --Snowded (talk) 23:01, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the message, and the removal of protection. I would be interested to know what your advice would be in similar circumstances. This was the first edit war I have been embroiled in. I reversed what I thought was neo-vandalism (we get a lot of this on Wales with attempts to make Wales more UK, less distinct). It was then reversed again with a request for evidence, I reversed providing evidence and then moved to the talk page. However the other protagonist would not move there, but reversed again. For a third time I reversed, with a second request for talk. I then stopped as I had reached three in a day, but in practice you came in --Snowded (talk) 23:35, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

edit request

Did you see my edit request by the way? It's not related to the edit war, but something I feel should be amended, that was put in during that time. It's now stuck in the Introduction and doesn't favour Wales as a country at all, imo. My suggestion is just a compromise that the person who wrote it won't mind (it adds clarification along his own lines to his edit that makes Wales look a little less like England!). Since the Calzaghe fight I think this article will be looked at by a great many people who know little about Wales. It's a frustrating time (and stage) for it to be locked. --Matt Lewis (talk) 01:10, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I'm new to wikipedia, is there a way to message you privately please? It is about an entry I want to discuss with you privately?? Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mellbell90 (talkcontribs) 08:27, 3 May 2008

Re:Should this existing FL be split into shorter lists?

This is in response to your post at WP:FL. As far as I know, there is no official procedure, but I think the best way would be to move the larger list to the new page, and it would retain its FL status, then move the smaller one to a new page and it would have to go through a seperate FLC. If you want another opinion, ask at WT:FLC (more FLC regulars have that page on watch). -- Scorpion0422 19:25, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

DYK update

You active? It's several hours late again. Gatoclass (talk) 09:38, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

RFA for Gatoclass

You inquired about nominating him for adminship. You can co-nom at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Gatoclass 2 if you're still interested. Royalbroil 03:52, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks B :) Looking forward to it. Gatoclass (talk) 06:33, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Tall, Taller, And Teller Deletion

Could you please tell me why my page was deleted? I posted a reason for it to remain on my talk page. Pheonex (talk) 23:16, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Will I be able to post some of the page up again when it is on YouTube?

Pheonex (talk) 23:27, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

OK. Thanks for your time. Pheonex (talk) 23:36, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

WBOSITG's RfA

RFA

Thanks Bench! It's a little late to organize my thank-spam tonight, so I'll have a bit more to say tomorrow :) Gatoclass (talk) 11:44, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

RfA thank-spam

Bencherlite/Archive 4, just a note of appreciation for your recent support of my request for adminship, which ended successfully with 112 supports, 2 opposes, and 1 neutral. If there's something I've realized during my RFA process this last week, it's that adminship is primarily about trust. I will strive to honour that trust in my future interactions with the community. Many thanks! Gatoclass (talk) 06:26, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Whew! Finally got through all that thank-spamming. That was hard work! Anyhow, saved the best till last.

This is just a special thanks for being my co-nom, which helped get my RfA off to a flying start. Not to mention the strong support and encouragement you've given me over the last few weeks.

I was planning to hand you a six-pack but since I couldn't find one, I'm just shouting you to a beer instead. Enjoy! Gatoclass (talk) 09:56, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Return of a sock puppet

I could be wrong but 122.105.220.129 postings on the England talk page are very similar to our former sock puppet on Wales. Same use of odd web sites (about.com), same repetition without reading other people's comments, same constant outdents and the date s/he started ending matches. I'm new to this aspect of the Wikipedia so would appreciate it if you would take a look and tell me if I am wrong. --Snowded (talk) 09:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for checking, and apologies I should have doubled checked the IP addresses first before bothering you! --Snowded (talk) 12:34, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Jim Sweeney

Thanks I have added a request to WPRENAME Jim Sweeney (talk) 07:56, 2 June 2008 (UTC) for now at least

Thomas Sampson speedy

You obviously didn't take the trouble to check the page history in the deletion of Thomas Sampson. This you should always do. Charles Matthews (talk) 08:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi Bencherlite. I'm the one who nominated the article. I actually DID check the history but obviously not deep enough. Sorry about that.  Channel ®   10:54, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Oops

Oops, sorry! I completely missed that typo. Good thing you were on the job, because I obviously forgot to review the edit before I made it! Gatoclass (talk) 09:26, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

I thought of trying to edit it to make it more readable, but then decided it wasn't worth the bother :)
BTW, I notice on your user page that you are a musician. You might be interested to read my latest article, Raymond Hanson. I'm not usually that happy with my articles but I was kind of pleased with the way this one turned out. Gatoclass (talk) 09:49, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Kurylewicz

Thanks, he is notable after all and deserves an article here. Regards. Tymek (talk) 21:01, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks - I took the liberty of fixing the message to list all seven articles that made it in one hook! BencherliteTalk 01:05, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Haha, brilliant work on all seven Welshmen! Nishkid64 (Make articles, not wikidrama) 01:16, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Replied to your post. Lradrama 10:50, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

It's OK I can see your concerns. The 6 month block is fine. I'm glad we were able to sort this out quickly and efficiently. Thankyou. It is what working on Wikipedia should be like all the time. Best wishes, Lradrama 11:32, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
