Vanuatu_Girl_Guides_Association.svg     Done
You're welcome. Sorry but it seems I set off a tag minefield on the first couple I vectorised for you - don't have the time to get to grips with that at this moment, so I'll need to stop there for now. Begoon (talk) 03:17, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, and thank you! I hope you don't give up-you do beautiful work, and you make Wikipedia a better place. I wrote the deletion-tagger to give these images more time than 20 minutes after their upload, and to assume good faith. I am in Japan, so a lag of 18 hours is necessary. It is unusual to see freshly-created images put up for speedy deletion, and I asked him to stop. I've been here nearly five years, whatever you create, we can fix the tags and work with. Again, thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:39, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try to look at some more of them for you in the next few days - I genuinely don't have a lot of spare time for this at the moment. I also understand that the user tagging them is just being zealous - but one has to wonder how many people that huge wall of text and scary red icons scares off completely from editing in this area - probably a fair few good contributors lost that way, in my opinion. It's fine that the images need to comply with the rules, but there's probably a more user friendly way than "scary" templates without any personal communication...Begoon (talk) 03:46, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Truer words were never spoken, my friend! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 09:13, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Can you color-fix Vanuatu, and also this one at Commons? File:WikiProject Scouting trefoil blank.svg Thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 08:54, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Both done now - Vanuatu wasn't in My Recent Image List, because you last uploaded it, to revert the border, so I missed that one... Begoon (talk) 10:18, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. I so appreciate what you're doing for us! Do you take requests? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 09:12, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Only on the basis that I don't know when, or if, I'll have time to do them - or, indeed, be able to - depending on what they are. But feel free to ask - it may be within my capabilities, I just don't want to promise until I know what you need :-) Begoon (talk) 09:17, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Scouts-Guides Organisation (India).svg     Done

Then I will go slow, and I appreciate what/when you can do. Can you make an SVG of File:Scouts-Guides Organisation (India).png-redraw-platinum and brick red are proper colors, however adding the photo misaligned the badge. http://www.thesgo.org/ using File:Emblem of India.svg and File:Ashthalakshmi - Star of Laxmi.svg 8-point stars, vectorize? Thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 11:42, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's a horrible file. Questions:
  • Can we get a better trefoil (even as an outline) from somewhere ? It's a different basic shape to all the standard Scouting ones I can find. Other than that, I will need to redraw it, which will take a bit of time.
I can't find a good match for it, there really is not much standardization. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 05:16, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Where did the grey/platinum fill come from - on the main thesgo page it's just purple outline. If you're interpreting that colour from the poster (22.jpg) - I'd say it's far too dark - it should be a slight grey/silver only (almost white), with a bit of fade/vignette inside the outline ?
A photo, cited in the newest variant. I like your slight grey/silver with a bit of fade idea. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 05:16, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Doubtless stating the obvious - they must have some better artwork which they use for their posters/badges - if you emailed their "Contact Us" link, might that not be a good idea ? They might be able to scan something better which we can use as a starting point - everybody wins, they could get a nice Adobe Illustrator file from me to use as digital artwork for their website and publications/badges, and Wikipedia gets a better logo...
    Begoon (talk) 13:39, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I tried, nothing yet. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 05:16, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - I'll have a look at tracing/redrawing it in the next day or two (incidentally, the photo cited (22.jpg) is the one containing the poster which I was referring to above when I said the grey/silver is far too dark. I'm assuming that photo is where you ascertained the stars were red, too - Begoon (talk) 05:32, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, exactly. I would have said purple-and-white were default colors, as standard for many organizations, see World Scout Emblem. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 11:22, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I may have found a shape-match for you in File:All India Boy Scouts Association.png-India has a lot of Scout assocs. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 11:26, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Too late - I'd already redrawn it! :-) (that All India one is slightly different, anyway.) New image is uploaded - best viewed a bit larger to see detail - clicky-linky.... That's about the best I can do with limited originals Begoon (talk) 12:54, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's really beautiful-fantastic and way better than I hoped, especially with a bad original! I like that you boosted the emblem itself in proportion to the ribbon-I was gonna ask you to do that! Can you scoot the lions a little left so the centerline of the wheel matches the centerline of the fleur-de-lis? Thank you so much!--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 18:19, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Done - or as near as I can, given that the emblem isn't perfectly symmetrical - so I had to rotate (skew it a couple of degrees) - but that's not noticeable. (refresh browser if it doesn't seem to change) - Begoon (talk) 18:43, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
One more question, and you're gonna hate me, (I love this work by the way) since black does not exist in the original emblem, any way you can change the black lions and scroll outlining to the existing purple? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 02:25, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
ok - done... - Begoon (talk) 06:51, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect! Thank you so much! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 06:53, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done - For "Forest Green", I assumed This Web Colour-#228B22 - Begoon (talk) 16:48, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

People's Republic of Southern Yemen Guides Association.svg     Done

Next one when you get a chance, thank you so much! If you vectorize it, please name it File:People's Republic of Southern Yemen Guides Association.svg --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 15:23, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The file I've put at File:People's Republic of Southern Yemen Guides Association.svg is only a default trace/colour - I still need to tidy it up - there are some horrid edges in that file Begoon (talk) 17:08, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Better now, thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 18:54, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah - I wasn't expecting you to put it in the article until I'd finished - I generally have to reupload a couple of times, because Wikipedia renders them differently to AI. Also, I forget to crop sometimes, as you noticed !! Begoon (talk) 19:04, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Still, you rock, thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 19:13, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Asociaţia Scout Catolică din România.svg     Done

Next one when you get a chance, thank you as always! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 19:23, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK - confused... Reverse the colours could mean:
  • a: Leave the white as white (transparent), purple areas->green, green areas->purple.
  • b: Exactly as the AGESCI logo, but replace the "yellow" with green, and new lettering.
  • c: Something else ?
(a:) doesn't make sense - because the logo is correct according to this at ro.wikipedia.org which looks like it might be a scan of a cloth badge.
(b:) looks awful - the contrast between purple and green is not enough - see Example here
So I did what I thought was right - it's at: File:Asociaţia Scout Catolică din România.svg - feel free to tell me colours need swapping somewhere. Begoon (talk) 01:51, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
b is what I meant, sorry for the confusion. Perhaps the green can be lightened? I think they look terrible together too. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 02:40, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Have a look now - "reversed" colours as per discussion - reduced amount of black in green 40%->30% - any more and it starts to be a different colour Begoon (talk) 03:06, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I also put a couple of versions with a white keyline to separate the colours, which I think look 100 times better - you can revert to one of those if you like. - Begoon (talk) 03:45, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are brilliant, thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 04:05, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Same issue, when you can, thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 04:46, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - when I do that, I guess I could use the green leaf outline from this image instead of the "jaggied" green splodge in the existing file :) - Begoon (talk) 07:14, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's way better, where did you find that little gem? I was looking for a good shape match for you, couldn't find one. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 08:16, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just a Google Image search for "Organizaţia Naţională a Scouţilor din Moldova". The 6th result is this Facebook Page. - Begoon (talk) 08:54, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - uploaded to File:Organizaţia Naţională a Scouţilor din Moldova.svg - Begoon (talk) 09:51, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Great, except this time the inside fleur-de-lis should be white. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 10:06, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're absolutely right - my bad - changed it now, much better looking like that, too - Begoon (talk) 10:18, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 11:15, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can you invert File:Union Internationale des Guides et Scouts d'Europe.svg so the fleur-de-lis is red, the cross is white with a red border? Thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 12:31, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Uploaded - can you fix up description/article name, please. - Begoon (talk) 12:53, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect right off the bat, thank you! Sorry I was snagging a bite to eat. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:36, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty busy tomorrow, but I'll try to look at them soon(ish)... - Begoon (talk) 14:50, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you... --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 15:16, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - those 2 are done now - I think I updated all articles/links - but have a check...Begoon (talk) 12:38, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, fantastic, great! The 1940 one looks a little choppy in the green border, maybe it is just my monitor, I will check tomorrow. Thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 19:15, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No - you're right - the 1940s one I settled for a default trace for the borders because it was very close - the others I redrew. I've tweaked the 1940s one now, and it looks better - certainly good enough for the resolution you can display it in the infobox Begoon (talk) 20:13, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! Illegal? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:44, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
erm... not sure what you mean (illegal)? Begoon (talk) 10:35, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, your edit summary was tautology - tweaking your own tweak is possibly illegal in some jurisdictions-I wasn't so sharp when I got up this morning, sorry. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 11:17, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's the price I pay for using bad humour, when I think I'm talking to myself... I'd even forgotten the summary :-) Begoon (talk) 11:47, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I do it myself, not a problem until I answer myself! :-o --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:04, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, I noticed you asked for the wheel on the Cuban 40s logo - I've uploaded it and reverted to the old version, only because I wasn't sure what it was for - I couldn't see a version with a wheel on the Spanish Cuban Scout historical websites I found - anyway it's there now  -  Begoon (talk) 04:12, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have sent you one of the images I have with the mariners' wheel, I have better ones, but they are across the Pacific. You found more than one Spanish Cuban Scout historical website? I've only seen one, I can use the resources if you remember where they are parked. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:52, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That really came out nice, it's even a good color match! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 19:00, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know what the text in the scroll says - and the language/character set - ? If not, I'll have to grab a bitmap/trace off what's there - but because I don't know the characters it'll be hard to know how it scales... Begoon (talk) 21:00, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Arabic and translates to Together to Serve, but I don't know the transliteration. Perhaps better to leave this one as png for now and just fix the coloration? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:47, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The article says "the text, which says وأطيعوا, meaning "obey"." - anyway, it's done now - I traced it in the end and its at least as clear as it was in the png - I don't want to put those characters in because in Arabic font they don't look exactly like what's there, so I'd rather not alter that. Begoon (talk) 14:41, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I knew I should have read the whole article, d'oh! It's brilliant! However, it still has a box around it, top and left particularly but all visible. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:46, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Funny thing is, I knew that keyline was still there - noticed it about 10 times while I was tracing/redrawing, but forgot to delete it in the end. Gone now... ` Begoon (talk) 23:06, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Instead, here's a softball. ;) --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:49, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just a solid fill of that pink, and leave outline the same colour ? (I'm sure my grandma used to say "pink and green should never be seen" - but maybe I'm mis-remembering...) - Begoon (talk) 14:41, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Aye lad, precisely! I thought it was "green and pink, make you think", but it's in Vietnamese, so it doesn't rhyme. ;) I think the darker pink may be better, the modern iterations are File:Vietnamese Scout Association.svg and File:Scouts Lao.svg --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:58, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded 4 versions in sequence of darkness, plus a gradient version - then I reverted to the original - have a look at them Begoon (talk) 23:57, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I love the gradient version, I wasn't expecting that! Thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:38, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I know this is collapsed already as finished, but I've been admiring it all day, it's stunning! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:26, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's ok - I only collapse the sections to keep the page manageable. Yes, the gradient version is quite nice. I did it because there's no way you could represent that flower's colour, which flows from almost white, through several pinks, to almost purple, just by using an average solid colour - the human eye just doesn't work that way. - Begoon (talk) 21:24, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Boy Scouts of the United Nations.svg     Done

Replace dark blue keyline with surrounding light blue, please. Thank you for being willing to do this! Many graphicists insist on borders when there are none, and none are necessary for contrast. And de-funkify the shape if you can, it just looks... strange. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 04:05, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if I am a pest. Tell me to shove off if you need. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 19:34, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all - I can't always look at them straight away, though - as I mentioned. As it happens I wanted to ask what you didn't like about the shape. Is it just that dodgy curve on the right, or is it rather that the whole Scout fleur looks squashed and bulbous ? Is it like that on your "original" ? I can't find any online examples at all. (incidentally, that file opens quite oddly in Adobe Illustrator - the paths for the map in the centre are invisible because of some quirks in the order of layers - probably because there just are so damn many layers in the way it was created - it renders ok with the WP svg engine, though, and it works ok in Inkscape so I can use that (although I hate Inkscape)) - ) Begoon (talk) 21:24, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Whew, I thought I had chased you off. All-dodgy curve, squashed and bulbous, let me see if I have a good image, is it okay if I e-mail it to you? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:30, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine, I sent you an email address  -  Begoon (talk) 08:49, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I looked on my laptop, unfortunately the original I have is in storage 6000 miles across the Pacific. You're right, I did a Google image search, bag of nothing, I checked http://www.worldbadger.com/country3.asp?name=UNITED%20NATIONS, they don't have an image, all I can say is the shape is much more similar to the purple badge with the rope that I often point you to. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 15:43, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - I can still do something with it on that basis - I'll try to have a look at it tomorrow  -  Begoon (talk) 15:51, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I redrew the fleur completely to match more closely the standard shape, and uploaded a new version.  -  Begoon (talk) 20:55, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Much better, thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:31, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You rock, by the way! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 23:23, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you can't do the metallic purple or the embossed look, straight purple is fine as it would be more fitting for their cloth badges. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:55, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've put a version at File:Boy Scouts Association of Zimbabwe 2008.svg It manages to get enough more detail that you can actually see the bird emblem. There's a bit of graduation in the colour to give a hint of depth, but not overdone. I haven't redirected any articles or retagged the png.  -  Begoon (talk) 13:06, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That is brilliant, thank you! I have done all the redirecting and tagging, found it on articles I didn't suspect. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 14:15, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Scout-Association-of-the-British-Virgin-Islands.svg     Done

This one could really use your expertise. In addition to straight cleanup, can you put it atop a fleurdelis like File:Antigua and Barbuda Branch of The Scout Association.png. That's the new-type variant. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 15:04, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok - that looks a bit messy - I'll try over the next couple of days. -  Begoon (talk) 17:29, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about messy, if you want, you can skip it. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ)
I'll still have a look at the Virgin Islands one.  -  Begoon
Done - at File:Scout-Association-of-the-British-Virgin-Islands.svg - I completely recreated it from the coat of arms/redrawing/new text - the old png file is odd - it won't open in any of 5 graphics programs I tried it in. (It doesn't even display in the browser in Google Chrome, although Firefox/IE render it).  -  Begoon (talk) 10:51, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I had the same problem when I first found it-this is a friend's badge from a really small association, he's French, maybe they have some weird non-standard program there. Nice to see it so fixed up, thank you so much! Couple of small changes, if I may:
If you can fix the stars, this one is perfect, thank you so much! There are four others that have gone to this style badge of late, which I may ask you for later. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:40, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the best part about that is I started with the stars equal sided, and actually redrew them to match the Antigua ones. Anyway, fixed now, and I gave the face a little tweak, too  -  Begoon (talk) 17:07, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, now I know which is the right fleur - I replaced the whole thing - there were some wrong paths in my drawing  -  Begoon (talk) 17:35, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, gorgeous, thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:39, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pacific Blank Map (Mercator projection).svg     Done

Which reminds me, how big files can you handle before your computer crashes? I have a perennial request at the Commons Map Lab no one can do without problems.Chris (クリス • フィッチュ)

If you link me to the Map Lab issue, I'll have a quick look and let you know  -  Begoon (talk) 04:12, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Graphic_Lab/Map_workshop#WAGGGS-WOSMWestHemMap-World.svg . The big svg map needs to be trimmed way down to just the area of the gold map, but the big map's perspective is better. Thank you for looking. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ)
That big svg map won't load in Illustrator or Inkscape. I found a different Mercator map, chopped and recoloured it - at: Pacific_Blank_Map_(Mercator_projection)  -  Begoon (talk) 13:34, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now updated - WAGGGS-WOSM-Western_Hemisphere.svg  -  Begoon (talk) 15:40, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That is amazing! You don't know how long we've needed that one done! You are my hero!--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 15:50, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you did! Clever! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:25, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I think the problem was that the file you were trying to use just won't load into graphics editors except possibly those used by NASA !!! It says it was "Created in R using: library(maps) library(mapproj) library(mapdata) map("worldHires", fill=TRUE, proj="mercator, resolution=0.001, lwd=0.025, wrap=TRUE, col="grey", orient=c(90,180,0))"
R (programming language) is the language that was used, but I think the resulting file is just too complex for Adobe/Inkscape (or maybe uses incompatible xml/language forms).
I managed to find World_Blank_Map_(Mercator_projection).svg which is more manageable - then it's just a case of duplicating it all to the right of itself, to get the Pacific centred, and cropping the 2 ends off.  -  Begoon (talk) 16:34, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This one is hopefully a lot more straightforward. Thank you again! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 18:02, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I uploaded a version with and a version without the fleur. (Don't worry if you click on the history thumbnails and see a black keyline on the rope - that seems to be a quirk in the wikipedia svg preview - if you revert to the one you want it renders ok as a white keyline) -  -  Begoon (talk) 05:46, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Messy is right - no alternative but to totally redraw that - I've uploaded 2 versions - one with the colours from the Russian flag svg - one with the blue from the original png - not sure what else can be done if we don't have a better starting point... (I haven't changed any article links or tags etc...)  -  Begoon (talk) 10:47, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed all that. This one is really stunning, faithful and better all at once! Art is your true calling, I really admire that you have that skill! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 11:49, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
LOL - stunning, no - just a lot of time consuming straight lines and "colouring in", really.  -  Begoon (talk) 11:56, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the "time consuming" bit-you're regularly improving these images, some of which have been in pretty shoddy shape for a while, so I am sorry for imposing and at once I am grateful you are here. The big associations-America, Europe... have their own artists so their emblems always look sharp, but the out of the way ones, Wikipedia is their best face, most don't even have websites. Thanks, I really mean it.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 12:41, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Scout Association of Dominica.svg     Done

Hopefully this one isn't so bad. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 12:41, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not ignoring this one - just deciding the best way to tackle it. I can't find a good, big image of the coat of arms to trace, and it's really too intricate to redraw - so I may redraw and vectorise the rest, and embed the coat of arms as a png - unless I can improve the tracing parameters - I'm experimenting with that  -  Begoon (talk) 10:44, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, you're busy, do what you can when you can. Dominica and the Caribbean islands have the worst-conditioned and -licensed arms on the 'pedia, and are routinely deleted. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 10:48, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well I've actually got a decent trace from the official coat of arms you can find on a Google Image Search - not the "cartoony" version. Now I'm playing with the "D" motif and its funky background - tomorrow maybe...  -  Begoon (talk) 13:25, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - that one's done as best I can with those originals  -  Begoon (talk) 01:49, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's cool how you did the watercolory-pebbly-effect. Really the original is just a bad scan of a badge that uses that gold mylar thread. If you think it would look better solid (I do), you can use the gold like File:Faravahar-Gold.svg or File:US-O4 insignia.svg. Also, outside the D, the background should be transparent, and can you remove the shading behind the coat-of-arms? Thank you so much, this one is a lot of work for you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 02:02, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Gold "D" done
  • as much of shadow removed as possible, any more you lose detail
  • I've given you transparency outside "D" against my better judgement - it shouldn't be done as this is not really a valid option because type is outside "D" and will disappear on dark background.
 -  Begoon (talk) 04:44, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, also for your diligence with dark backgrounds, however, unless/until Wikipedia goes to the power-saving blackscreen (being discussed), this is the preferred WPMOS for image backgrounds. You did beautifully on this one, thank you!--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 05:44, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
unless/until Wikipedia goes to the power-saving blackscreen (being discussed), this is the preferred WPMOS for image backgrounds - do you have a link to that ? Seems very odd to me - if the image is always displayed on a white background then its immaterial whether there is transparency - and if it isn't then it matters - transparency should be created with a knowledge of the intended background colour or you can get all sorts of unintended fringes etc. If the MOS asks for transparent backgrounds then it must define white as the matte - and if it displays images in a white box anyway it seems a pointless requirement. If it doesn't always display in a white box then it is incorrect to have transparency like this - imagine the type were light grey and it displays on a light grey background (like the thumbnails in the file history)  -  Begoon (talk) 06:04, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to root around for it, so far no luck, it's somewhere around Wikipedia:Preparing images for upload. Anyway there's some imperative for them to have the {{opaque}} tag.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 09:19, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There's this: Category:Images_that_should_have_transparent_backgrounds - but to my mind that really means "images that would work better with transparent backgrounds" not that they are incorrect just because they don't. There's a discussion here: Wikipedia_talk:Preparing_images_for_upload#Category:Images_with_opaque_backgrounds where someone offers the opinion that they should have transp bkg because they won't always be in a white box - but the problem with that is that unless you know what the "other colour" they will be superimposed on is, you can't make a sensible transparent image (see my example above if Dominica had grey type, and used with grey backdrop). I'm afraid I'll take some convincing that it's even possible to create a transparent background that will work against any and all backgrounds - so therefore a policy that they should have one because of the possibility they might be used against an (unspecified) other colour than white would be just plain wrong. If you find it, please tell me where it is because, worded like that, it would need changing imo.  -  Begoon (talk) 09:50, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No dice, and just found that the company that took over my old company that went bankrupt is trying to hose me (with me so far?). Can we table it for now as finished, and come back later if it still bugs you? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 19:21, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You may - but I'll need you to fill in this colour guide because I came away all vague from your tag...:
  • Outer circle
    • Fill: no, leave as is
    • keyline:y/n:colour: red as at present, try one with black keyline to see if it looks better, it may
  • Main fleur assuming 'wings' and 'body' the same - specify if not
    • Fill: left petal orange fade, right petal green fade, center petal white with slight edge fades from side petals
    • keyline:y/n:colour:
  • Solid tall diamond lozenge in centre of fleur
    • Fill: red as at present, try one with black keyline to see if it looks better, it may
    • keyline:y/n:colour: red as at present, try one with black keyline to see if it looks better, it may
  • Oval "serviette ring" (LOL) centre of fleur
    • Fill: white
    • keyline:y/n:colour: red as at present, try one with black keyline to see if it looks better, it may
  • Tusks
    • Fill: Grey per FSIF logo
    • keyline:y/n:colour: red as at present, try one with black keyline to see if it looks better, it may

Wow you are thorough, and I like your terminology. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 11:59, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok - I'll try to get to that tomorrow, if I have time  -  Begoon (talk) 12:17, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've uploaded that - 4 versions red/black/light red/grey keylines - I reverted to the red keyline, which I prefer. No articles altered/tags fixed.  -  Begoon (talk) 02:35, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is fantastic, you got it! Thank you for trying the grey and pink varieties, I actually prefer the black but the red is good. Question-I find the thickness of the keylines overwhelms the emblem. Can you scale back the keylines to half or one third of present? Something like you did at Mahdi Scouts above is what I have in mind. Thank you!--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 02:56, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's actually a total pain, because those aren't really keylines, they are geometric shapes traced from the original. To make them thinner, you need to alter the shape, and then it doesn't intersect with the other shapes in the right places. The only way to get anything like is to drag around about 100 anchor points on 20 paths and reshape all the curves manually. Anyway - the best I can do will be uploaded in 10 seconds...  -  Begoon (talk) 07:46, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Painful is right, I put it back. I had no idea such math and stuff was involved. Sorry.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 11:38, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
ok - I took pity and redrew it from scratch - sometimes it's the only way - but I don't usually have time to do that...  -  Begoon (talk) 14:39, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

While we're on keylines, can you actually make File:Plast National Scout Organization.png thicker? (this one you could upload straight to Commons if you vectorize) --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 05:16, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to make this one painful for you, there's an earlier image with a full blue background that really just needed a trim, you can see several color variations, so long as the trident is gold and the petals are some shade of light blue, they'll be happy. Maybe match the Ukie flag. The Russian article has a black/white lineart variant if it helps. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 11:40, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Persatuan Pandu Puteri Malaysia title.svg     Done

Since I saw your interest in Malaysia, it got me thinking.

Since their creation, Burma, Laos, Ethiopia and Iran have had their emblems at Commons-I support this under some idea of PD-old, as the first two are totally defunct and the last two are often defunct, reborn and tottering. Maybe Cuba should be there for the same rationale. However, File:Persatuan Pandu Puteri Malaysia.svg, which is a present use badge, has always plagued me, I think it should not be at Commons-only here, what think you? If you have the same concerns, please help, I have tried to mess with svgs and they don't work for me.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 00:43, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, why can't we just clean up this version from the current website to svg, upload it to en with all your Scout fur rationales with a slightly altered name, as it's a different image, then tag the commons one for deletion as copyvio.  -  Begoon (talk) 07:36, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It seems like more work, but if you're okay with that... I kind of like the ring outside as well. File:Persatuan Pandu Puteri Malaysia text.svg would be best. Thanks! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 08:23, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I had to use File:Persatuan Pandu Puteri Malaysia title.svg because I stupidly uploaded the file to Commons first and used the file name.  -  Begoon (talk) 10:11, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I thickened the type, turned the scroll and centre to white, because it lost all definition with so much pink in the small sizes. I think it looks much better like that, and since the original is b/w only, and they use it in every colour combo you can imagine if you follow the links from the website, seems ok.  -  Begoon (talk) 11:05, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, white is much crisper. I hadn't noticed about the multiple colors, but a lot of Guide orgs do that it seems. The red-pink was actually based off a badge I have. Is there a two-tone combo more Malay-representative? The red-green-blue-yellow of File:Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia.svg seems too busy to me, but the star on the flag is yellow like that.
Also, can you bring the star to points?--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 11:11, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Before you posted any of that I was already doing a version using the red/yellow/blue of the flag - I just uploaded it.  -  Begoon (talk) 11:37, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No special interest at all - I'm British, living in Australia - so I guess that gives me a bit of interest in both SE Asia and Commonwealth stuff - but nothing specific to Malaysia - I reverted a bit of vandalism there, fixed up some bad grammar, and I keep nearly everything in my watchlist so I guess editing the article grew from that. Ok - I haven't had a chance to get to the last couple yet - birthday parties for my 7 year old and work - but when I do I'm not clear what needs doing with this - it's already an svg, and there seem to be no reasons in the "clean up" tag. I did note that [1] has a different logo. - Begoon (talk) 05:05, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Envy you being busy in the right way! Happy birthday! Boy or girl? The cleanup tag doesn't show the text for some reason, click on edit and it will make sense. Ok - my system keeps reverting that font for some reason - have to come back to that when I work out why.  Begoontalk 06:07, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I figured that might be what it was. Fun fun! When you put the green on, can you make the "frosting" as thick as the darker gold? It should be bicolor only without shade gradation.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:12, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Done - I got the shits with the font and turned the characters to vectors - I think it was Deja Vu Serif, but the borders were wacky, so this was easiest and safest - with the fonts embedded as it was I could make it render differently in Firefox/IE/Chrome - due to the odd way the WP renderer sometimes creates the png images it really uses. As vectors there's no danger of that at all.  Begoontalk 07:31, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can you have a look at File:Girl Scouts of the USA 1912-1976.png?--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:21, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's pretty crap. I'll need to see if I can find a better version first - recolouring that properly would need a pretty big redraw, and that doesn't fit too well into the little time slots I've got at the moment. I can't really just steal the eagle because (s)he's different (look at wings, lower abdomen) and even then it still leaves fiddly twigs/leaves/claws and stuff that I can hardly make out in the original - if I can't find a better definition version it'll have to wait a little while for one of those rainy afternoons I'm afraid - Begoon (talk) 16:47, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This File:US-GreatSeal-Obverse.svg may help.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 18:32, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm about halfway through doing this - massive redraw with some "borrowed" bits from the various files. It's a bit like graphic taxidermy - cutting up eagles and sticking them back together in a different shape - working out ok though. What I can't work out is the "banner" at the top. It looks like just a plain "streamer" - no wording - but I have no idea what colour it should be. Similarly - I have no guide for colour for the G.S. lettering or the funny shaped clover outline. - Begoon (talk) 19:08, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The shape is a trefoil. These images may be a bit of help: [2] [3] [4] I'm not an expert here, but I don't recall ever seeing a full color version of this logo. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 20:53, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The banner should be whitish, as in the Great Seal. I've never seen it with writing, I think it's okay to leave it blank. The GS/border combo (they seem always to match) I have seen in two variants, gold/gold like the Boy Scout First Class badge and the examples Gadget850 provided, and dark mint green, like the stylized Girl Scout logo before you updated it, that slightly darker shade-I have it in cloisonné 6000 miles away. ;) --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:54, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Try File:Girl Scouts of the USA 1912-1976.svg - no articles/tags changed. - Begoon (talk) 06:10, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I have changed the tags and such. The brown edging/GS is way heavy, can you try one each in gold-with-black-outline and dark mint green like the 1976-2010 Girl Scout logo?--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 19:39, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not right away. I know the borders are crap, but the way I created them was an error - tracing from a bad image, and has made them too fiddly to change, so I'd need to redraw it. Incidentally, they're not really any thicker than the double border on the black/white or the raised part of the earrings pics linked above - just solid. I simply can't put any more time into that one at the moment - you don't want to know how much time has already gone into that. It might look like just a few bits chopped/pasted moved from some other files, but there was truly a lot more involved to attempt to get that to look anything like what I think that crappy mono bitmap was. I will go back to it at some point, because it does need altering, but I couldn't force myself, or have the heart to start playing experimentally with it again right now. Sorry. - Begoon (talk) 13:33, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I personally, and the rest of us, but especially me, really appreciate that you do what you can when you can. We are incredibly fortunate to have a professional graphist helping us. Obviously the US Scouts don't need the PR so much, but a lot of those smaller countries you have been tackling for us, don't even have websites, so your artwork is the best face they could possibly have. I had a meltdown today, I'm just thankful you're here.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:47, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh - a meltdown, I see. Well, we all have them. It often just defines how strongly you feel about something, and if you go too far there really only ends up being yourself to discuss that with, and decide whether it was worth it. I had one last week (which wasn't worth it) and which you saw the echoes of here. My excuse was whisky and painkillers for my poor leg. Not really a good excuse - but then you don't actually need one, unless you choose to want one, which is why I never elaborated on it or actually offered it as an excuse. You were probably a bit strong there - which is why I will, under no circumstances, tell you I laughed at your comment. Oh. now see what I've done... However, you seem to have got the discussion you wanted out of it - so, again, you have to judge if that was worth the collateral. Possibly, for you, in this case it was. - Begoon (talk) 16:22, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Heck yeah. Felt good, but in a junior-high, get-the-monkey-off-my-back-and-a-little-reputation sort of way. Always had a problem with authority figures who hadn't earned being an authority. Old man is a cop and uncle is an NSW screwkey. Probably wanted to do just what I did two dozen times now. Hope I never pop that bad again, though. September is 40, junior high was ages ago.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:46, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
My sister used to be a UK "screwkey" (love the term) - she just retired on the strength of everyone not liking anything she ever did, so giving her a pension seemed easiest all round. A queue I'm only ever very briefly jealous of never being a big enough shit to get in. I generally only get 10% of the way through that thought - and since they can presumably take that kind of evidence on the "gate" I'm pleased about that. 40 makes you a kid - I handled all that 6 years ago. 40 is fine - you get loads of attention. 41 is the shitter, when you realise the attention was all for the zero, and not you. - Begoon (talk)
The graphics is actually where I'm the least professional of the things I do. I'm a better programmer, systems analyst, web designer and IT consultant than I am graphicist. I'd like to be better than I am, because I actually don't have the flair some of the kiddies do. (just more sense). That means it takes me longer than it should. Working for myself I like to be able to do it all - for obvious reasons. Jack of all trades - master of none... - Begoon (talk) 13:57, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Imhotep, Cicero, Elon Musk... such guys are the ones who really get stuff done. Thanks and good night!--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 15:50, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Not sure I'd want the divinity in the case of Imhotep (too much agonising and paperwork in the way I'd personally have to approach "godship").
  • Paypal - meh - hate it, I'm a developer, I have to hate Paypal (we swear an oath). But take your point.
  • Cicero - yeah I could take that as a role model - though I'd probably end up too tied up in the philosophising aspect to actually get anything done.
Actually would prefer to be Douglas Adams (but without the dying at the gym far too young part.)
Thank you though - the exercise of thinking about all that was valuable, and cheered me up a bit - had a 16 hour meeting today (11 hours of which was travelling) - and only got 50% of what I wanted out of it. I shall now proceed to consider that a half full glass. - Begoon (talk) 16:07, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think this one is a lot less icky than it looks, when you can, thank you!--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 02:48, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done - I also fixed the "bunching" in the article (I think) - It looked plain awful in Google Chrome/Mozilla - see WP:BUNCH if you're interested in why it happens/how to fix it. Sorry if you already knew that...  Begoontalk 07:47, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Beautiful, thank you! I kind of had to undo the fix, for some reason it broke something. Thank you again!--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 13:16, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, but if you don't think it's broken now, you should look at it in Firefox or Chrome - the section line goes right through the image, and the section titles are pushed inwards to make room for the image. Perhaps the images were in the wrong place after I inserted the "fixbunching", I didn't check that because I don't know where you want them, but personally I would have moved them in the source, rather than remove the template. At the moment the page is broken for up to 40% of users. Having said that, it probably doesn't matter on one level, since there are hundreds of pages like that, and it should be fixed at a higher level in the software than users having to bodge it by inserting templates.  Begoontalk 13:34, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Gonna hate me, dunno why I didn't think to look here when the uploaded badge at Commons (the png) looked weird to me, but http://www.worldbadger.com/image.asp?name=67480 the top should be rounded, not boxy, and the arms flesh-colored. Sorry.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 13:28, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Whenever I send you ones I think should be easy, they always turn out to be harder than I think they should be. Here's hoping this one really is okay. Because it's Ukraine, it's safe to put an svg at Commons. Anyway thanks, this is a weird summer. 40 comes up in six weeks...--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 03:06, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No - that looks like it will be easy enough, using the other SVG. The fleur outline should still be red? And the oval more that yellow/gold than lurid yellow?  Begoontalk 03:13, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think red or black outline both are okay. The flag at the URL is a darker red, so there will be contrast either way. Yes please, yellow-gold.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 05:14, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done - Red borders didn't really work - they show in the png because of the fabric texture, but pretty crap as line vectors - so used black.  Begoontalk 11:15, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It looks fantastic! The middle band should be white-white-white, not white-red-white, that is the old Belarusian flag. Right neighborhood, wrong country. ;) --Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 13:37, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kiribati Scout Association.svg    Done  &  Solomon Islands branch of The Scout Association.svg     Done

I have put these two together as they have similar properties. Hope they are all right for you.

  • Kiribati-using present emblem, encircle with top text above triangle, square knot below to form a ring. Ignore the gold background.
  • Solomons-using present emblem, place atop golden yellow fleur-de-lis, encircle with top text above triangle, square knot below to form a ring. Ignore the gold background except for coloration.

Thank you, you really earned that barnstar!--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 19:07, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just off to bed so I'm tired - this is probably me, so I apologise - but I don't really understand those descriptions at all - too many aboves, belows and existings without me seemingly grasping above what, below what or which existing what. The fact that I can hardly see in the originals what is text or rope or knot or jabberwocky isn't helping much... Could you possibly draw some sort of guide on a beermat or something with notes and arrows for the stupid (that would be me), scan it and email it - I'm only half joking (the jabberwocky bit) - something more visual might help. - Begoon (talk) 19:22, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, sent, they're ugly but they should make more sense.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:54, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Received - thank you. I have to get stuck into some RL work for the next few days, because the people who send me invoices are rather unreasonably refusing to accept Barnstars in payment. I'll have a look at those as soon as I have some time. - Begoon (talk) 14:12, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, barnstar was meant as a thank-you for your hard work. I put you up for it earlier, but it had to be debated first. Thanks and sorry.--Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:36, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now, see that's the beauty of English and communication on the internet, isn't it? I post what's supposed to be a jokey message about spending too much time editing Wikipedia when I need to get some work done, and you end up apologising because you think it means I'm upset about something. No problem - my humour is peculiarly British, generally, with a bit of Australian, and it's been my experience that it translates less than well in some cases. I should know better. - Begoon (talk) 05:52, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. The badge itself is still ugly, but the version you made is much, uh, well, just better, thank you! It's like the African countries that try to stuff every color available into their coats-of-arms, it just comes out painful. Sorry about your eyes. ;)--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 13:03, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it reminded me of those colour blindness test patterns we used to be given at school. The difference being that if this one were used, anyone who wasn't colour blind at the start of the test, or rendered colour blind by the test itself, would, after seeing this, wish that one of those 2 things were true... I'd love to hear a live performance of the Anthem without a title in its native Papiamento version. I'm sure it would be as much a treat for the ears as this emblem is to the eyes... Begoontalk 01:04, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I will have done now, but there are 3 colours in the png you know, it's not bicolour... I only made it light blue so as to be visible, but it's certainly a 3rd colour in the png.  Begoontalk 13:51, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's because my original was a b/w from a loaned library book, hastily colored back in the day. Several of the Girl Guide ones are still like that, the Guides don't do such a good job of international coverage as the Scouts, and the Scouts' coverage is poor at best. 400+ national emblems, most I had to hunt down myself, several were just sketches or word of mouth.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 18:01, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Colouring things copied from old library books - you'll make me feel old and nostalgic... I thought it would be something like that. Incidentally, if you can download the image from the discussion on User_talk:Egel#File:Scouting_Antiano.svg below, then email it to me. To be honest, it was too washed out - on the basis that the cloth badge was faded I've now taken the darkest green from it, and put a tiny amount of relief into the lettering to make it more defined. It's much better now  Begoontalk 14:36, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes - I thought that would make the castle too small - turns out it's ok. See how they've cheated on the png and raised the key in front of the door?
