Vandalism[edit]

I'm not sure what you were hoping to accomplish, but tampering with another user's user page and talk page is vandalism and it is unacceptable. You are hereby given a fair warning. If you pull something like that again, I'll block you from editing. Redux 00:13, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Arthur. Thank you for your message. Pardon me if the above message was a little "tough", but sometimes it's not that easy telling vandalism from an honest mistake. I'm glad to see that your case was the latter. Don't worry about it, everybody was new once. About the Federer article: your wording of it wasn't bad, since you said he is referred by some as the "Swiss genius", instead of saying, for instance, that he is a genius. That will still be perceived by most experienced users as POV though. Indeed, if you have sources that back this claim, it is recommendable to name them; In fact, when we're inserting affirmations that are bound to catch other users' eyes, we usually link the source in the very article (with this code: "many refer to Federer as 'the Swiss genius' [http://website ], [http://website2 ]). Notice, also, that if you only name one source, that happens to be, for instance, a Swiss sports publication, you might fail to persuade others that the nickname is indeed generalized and that Federer is somewhat ordinarily called that (and ideally we can't be using isolated opinions on Federer in the article, especially when it's already becoming too long as it is).
But there's also the question of placement. We don't always need to say everything in the opening paragraph (or the first couple of paragraphs, for that matter). Indeed, much of the stuff that is referenced in the opening part of the article will later be expanded, developed. So, you might consider the possibility of inserting this information further down along the article, in one of the existing sections, or a new one, that you may create. For instance, Curps' sentence states that Federer "is recognized as one of the greatest players of his era", from that, further down the article, we may expand on just how great Federer is considered to be today. It doesn't have to be all in the early paragraphs.
All of that doesn't preclude the possibility that the opening section may be lacking in terms of information. If what you are thinking of inserting there may be, in your opinion, erroneously perceived as POV, for instanece (the Federer article has been plagued with POV in recent times, so many users are already looking out for it...), it is always a good idea to discuss your intended changes/additions in the article's talk page before you implement them. Did I address everything? Regards, Redux 01:45, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
