"Hell is other people" was said ironically! The point of No Exit is that responsibility is held by the individual, that others are secondary to self despite outward appearances. Each chose to empower one and submit to the other, forming a loop. When the door flew open it emphasized that it wasn't the empowered that was responsible, but the person empowering. This forces us to reconsider the concept of responsibility. In the unspoken philosophical context of the play, each was condemned to freedom; the only power they had over the other was what the other allowed. And for this, hell is just-- yourself. As a side note, it is a shame that Simone's genius was shadowed by Sartre's fame.
