Hi AmiDaniel, I'm an italian wikipedian. I've seen some screenshot of your tool, and I wish to import it into it.wiki. Well, the interwiki VP project sort of ... ummm .... died, for the simple reason that VP was constructed initially as a single-wiki application and reconstructing it to be interwiki-compatible proved far too dificult. A sister project, m:WikiMonitor, however, will hopefully be going beta soon, and it will be quite capable of supporting _any_ wiki in _any_ language (that is, actually, the primal goal of the project). Question about Vandalproof:

I just clicked on a link to the vandalproof page & noticed your name there. I've never heard of the programme before & was wondering if I could ask you a couple of questions about it. 1)Can anyone use it? 2)It sounds exactly like the tools sysops use - Are they? 3)If so, do you have to be screened/elected to be able to use the tools or do you have to already be a sysop? 4)If vandalproof is like being an admin, why doesn't everyone just download the vandalproof file rather than go to RfA? any other info would be helpful... :) Thanks, Spawn Man 08:42, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One:Yes, but you must be approved. 2)Nope, sysops tools are built into MW software. Their actions are logged publicly. 3)You must have 250 good edits or be a sysop. 4) Because it isnt. To be honest, we're currently debating doing away with the moderation system altogether; however, until that time, I'm really quite unconcerned with who has access and who does not. You recently edited the "borescope" article and deleted two links that I added. I am curious why you think informational pages on How to Select a Borescope and Borescope Technology are spammy, while an article on the history of a particular borescope manufacturer is not spam. All are linked to borescope manufacturer's web sites, which obviously have the intention of selling their products. It is likely that any useful links will contain some "sales" content or be associated with a manufacturer or seller of borescopes. Please help me understand your (or Wikipedia's) criteria for spam. Read. I want to express my opinions regard it. I suggest that you consider installing a different CMS, like Drupal, Joomla or MkPortal. The last two can be connected with SMF. Joomla with a bridge, MkPortal's integration with SMF is build in the CMS, it's designed to handle SMF/phpBB/ipb/vbulletin. Yeah, postNuke is shit, but I really can't stand Joomla or Mambo .. or really any other CMS that I've seen. I'm really thinking about just doing a MediaWiki as the start page, unless I can find something better. The only problem with that route is that people then have to register for bugs, smf, mailing lists, _and_ the wiki, which is sort of a pain in the ass. Is VP2 not added as a product? I thought I had .. perhaps I forgot to set it public. Feel free to post bugs, although it may be some time before the devs get on board (or bugs may be abandoned for another system, though at the moment I really like it). Re: WikiMonitor, nothing at the moment .. I'm absolutely swamped and am not sure when I'll get around to it. I personally dislike CMSs in general. I use a basic HTML page, or a CMS system of my own design, when I am doing things like that. The other one was, though, horrible. Unfortunately I have no compiler on hand at the moment as my other laptop is nowherez to be found (actually I know where it is, but it's not here..). On another note, I'll have phpCollab up soon and hopefully a web-based interface for my subversion repository. The shell version is already up, so if you want to just ssh into it to upload, I can gladly give you a login. The web-based version should be a hell of a lot easier to use though. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the GFDL. As I now count it, there are three article forks with three unique histories, all about the same thing (this assuming there are no forks I do not currently know about). When you disagree with your fellow editors on something, DO NOT WP:POVFORK^{fixed by ffm ✎talk} THE ARTICLE! This is not a solution, but rather an even greater mess--indeed, this is why the redirect was protected in the first place, to help prevent such article forking. At present I do not see any reasonable way to merge these histories together, and I certainly do not have the time to fix it right now. I'm currently quite inclined to just AfD the whole lot of them, as these articles been nothing but headaches from the start and contribute very little to the encyclopedia. In the future, when you think a page needs to be at another name, use the "move" tab to do it--if you are unable to move the page, request that an administrator move it. If there is disagreement about where to move the article to, do not move it until a consensus can be reached. But for the love of god, do not just copy and paste the contents of the article into a new page at a different name. This is a violation of the attribution terms of the GFDL, and is an absolute nightmare to fix. I'm not going to do anything about this right now, I'll just say that I'll get to this when I do. Ok the reason why there are a few different pages is because they all have different subject headings and this was a censures decision taken by Sfacts administrator to split all the page so it prevents edit wars, all I want you to do now is un-block the Shree Swaminarayan Sampraday page and redirect it to the Swaminarayan Sampraday page which is very simple.

Yes, what you're asking me to do is a very simple task; however, performing that task does not resolve the blatant GFDL violations of these articles. If this forking was suggested by another administrator (I'm not familiar with the name "Sfacts"), please have him contact me. Before I'm going to begin unprotecting articles and screwing with redirects, however, I need for the GFDL attribution concerns to be addressed, which, frankly, is not "very simple". Your Wiki

Since it is a private wiki, why don't you install a feature similar to WikiTruth's, which disables account creation and editing by anonymous IPs? No hard feelings about the ad-infinitum block, I just didn't know that it was a private wiki. ~Step trip 01:50, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I can guess based on a conversation I had with AmiDaniel. (And you wouldn't need to install anything, just make some configuration changes). It is easier to let users create accounts that can't do anything (you should not have been able to edit) and change their rights to make them "join", rather then creating an account for anyone who needs to join via email. So really he didn't need to block you I suppose, unless he abandoned the idea of restricting editing because of an error message, and you could edit. Thanks - I've only just found my way back to you. Jo Mabel was also helping and suggested I went to Meta:Developer (something like that) which I did via his page but he's closed down and I now can't find my way back! These 24 hr. Wiki days, where change occurs all the time, are so difficult for 'newbies' to work with. I do want to get back, however, as myself - and will eventually do so. The next step will be to follow this up - so I do hope you can leve it here for a while, since I have to figure out all the dots and dashes - and that won't be today. VandalProof question...

Hello there. An editor recently placed a "serious warning" for "Blatant vandalism" on my talkpage using Vandalproof. It was perfectly obvious that my small edit was not vandalism, as i explained it in detail on the discussion page and later his talk page, and infact made the article more clear and accurate. I do not wish to impune his reputation, but it is pretty clear to me that he was using this vandalism tag to intimidate new users from editing a page he regularly edits. My question is: is Eurocopter tigre entitled to use this software or feature? It seems his talk page states that his application was turned down... In any case, entitled or not, I believe this user is using this software to persue an edit war against those who disagree with his inclusion of the EU on various lists of countries. Please ignore or delete this if this is not an appropriate place for this little problem. Or if you're busy doing something useful! You created this template, but the same thing can be accomplishd with {{pp-protected}} using the reason= parameter. Nothing transcludes the one you created and nothing links to it. OP Checking

Hi,

nmap will tell you that a given host has one or more http-related open ports. After that, how do you confirm that the host is actually an open proxy? The straightforward way would be to send an actual request to each open port, to retrieve a page from Google or Wikipedia. Is there a better way? --Gribeco 18:31, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In most cases, actually sending a request to the proxy is really not necessary (and many of these proxies I'd be terrified out of my mind to connect to); if you can identify services like squids or unfiltered http proxies, that's usually more than enough evidence to block it. In many cases, simply resolving the host will tell you everything you need to know (i.e., if the host resolves to a tor gateway). If you really feel that you need to connect to it to be sure, then probably wgetting google through it is the best way (though, please, keep iptraf running in the background, and close the connection if anything fishy happens -- a lot of these open proxies, like the myspace proxies that have started popping up, are really just tricks to infect more hosts). I unfortunately do not know of any better way to conclusively check proxies, and while a successful page request through the proxy pretty much proves that it is open, failing to get a successful page request in no way proves that it is not. User abusing vandalproof for edit-warring & non-vandalism reversions

Hi, the user User:Purgatory Fubar has been reported at WP:ANI for persistent abuse of vandalism tools. User has been "edit-warring" and using VP for quick revert purposes. Attempts to engage in discussion on his user page have been reverted, again using vandalproof.

Examples:

[5] - no explanation of random revert with vp given

[6] user warning given with vp, despite no vandalism having occurred anywhere

[7] attempt to discuss issue on user's talk page ignored and reverted using vp

[8] same again

[9] again removing attempted user talk page discussion using vp

[10] using vandalism reversion with vp to revert non-vandalism edit on another article

[11] when the other user clears *their* user talk page suddenly its vandalism and he uses vp to revert

[12] he issues a "last warning" to the user with vp

[13] another article - vp revert to non-vandalism edit

[14] another article - vp revert to non-vandalism edit

[15] attempt to "block" the user as a vandal (subsequently removed by administrators [16] and given warning by User:Ryan Postlethwaite [17])

[18] removing valid warnings (abuse of vandalism templates) from user talkpage without expln, using vp revert

[19] - removing valid warnings from somebody else's talkpage without expln, using vp revert

We (at least I anyway) know about that, and it should be fixed in the next version, assuming I bother the SVN devs enough. Until then, you can edit CustomButtons.txt, and make the the change locally. We'll try to get this fixed in the next release; however, Michael and Alex seem to have disappeared, and I have no time whatsoever presently for VP or WikiMonitor. Granted that not all can use it, could administrators, etc, be forced there for password and email changes? ("You cannot change this here, you have to log into the secure server." This would also stop a bunch of the "open keyboard" problems, as finding an admin-powered keyboard would only allow the usurper (who doesn't know the password) to commit temporary mayhem, not set himself up for more in the future.) Security is a pain, if we could only get rid of the users we'd have a prayer. ;) htom 23:33, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What's presently being discussed is a mechanism to allow session data to be transferred from the secure to the http server, and then requiring all users to log-in (but not edit) from that server. Still no word yet on if or when this is going to happen, though, and it's relatively low on the priority list. Mmmmph. Not really a Bugzilla user, and not sure how to proceed. I'll toss what I was going to leave there here, and if you think it worthwhile, please forward it to the appropriate list: "How about requiring, after the user attempts to change their password, email address, or both, that they then log into the HTTPS server, and complete the change request if they succeed in the HTTPS login? If they don't succeed in the login, then the change shouldn't be allowed and the attempt recorded, at least in the user's talk page, so that they know an attempt was made. I will guess that this should create only a small increase in traffic in the HTTPS server, but could prevent the damage propagations we saw today.
