Mobile editing[edit]

I'm trying mobile editing and having a hard time. Does the app not support mobile editing and is editing talk pages not allowed on the mobile web version? Thanks --Pine^✉ 02:52, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am terribly sorry, I just saw the email notification in my spam folder (ironically enough, I tend to browse the Wikipedia from an anon context...and even more ironcially, I saw your, or what I think was your, email on mobile-l before this post). The 2.0 app does support mobile editing - in unprotected pages, there should be one or more edit pencils to initiate the editing workflow from within the app. As for editing of talk pages on the mobile website, it is possible: one way to do this is to search for the talk page using the mobile website searchbar...for example, enter User_talk:ABaso(WMF) as the search term...and then you'll get to the talk page, from which you can edit (you'll generally need to be logged in on the mobile website to edit). Okay, here is what I would say:

In the past few years, WP:F1 has established a consensus that says its articles should be written in such a way that emphasises accessibility and readability for all users, irrespective of the device that they are using; this includes computers, tablets and mobile devices. If a user reports that an article cannot be read, then the community seeks to improve the quality of the article without impacting upon the ability of other users to read it. Because of this, Formula One articles—such as 2016 Formula One season—often use complex markup in tables (and associated results matrices, which are styled as templates for stability) and frequently employ multiple templates. An example of this is the use of the flagicon and nowrap templates; the flagicon is a visual representation of a team or driver's nationality, while the nowrap keeps everything on one line and prevents some very messy side effects that can come about when the table sort function is used.

However, recent updates to the Wikipedia software—introduced in the past month or so—have rendered the use of multiple templates impossible. This is most noticeable on mobile devices. Originally this forced everything across two lines; when that was fixed, the spacing was incorrect; when that was fixed, the flags themselves were not displayed properly; now flagicons do not appear properly when used with other templates. Strangely enough, they do appear properly when viewed in the editing preview window.

I'm looping in @OVasileva (WMF), who is now doing the product management work for the reading side on the web (I've been helping with this, but am now getting back more to my day-to-day engineering director work). @Prisonermonkeys, would you please take another look and share some screenshots of what you're seeing now? I know @jdlrobson has posted some additional patches in the last several days, so am curious if we're getting closer to a solid fix from what you can tell. CC @JHernandez (WMF), who is tech lead on Reading Web for the remainder of September 2016 (@Bmansurov (WMF) will take on tech lead duties for six months starting October 2016).
