Pile load test[edit]

Pile load tests are used to check the estimated load bearing capacity of a test pile on the site of an intended project.[1]

History of load testing[edit]

The procedure is based on the Case Method of pile testing and is standardized by ASTM D4945-00 Standard Test Method for High Strain Dynamic Testing of Piles.

Types of tests[edit]

Static or dynamic methods can be utilized to perform a load test.

Static load test[edit]

Static load tests generally consist of loading a pile in increments over an extended period of time and measuring the displacement experienced by the test pile. Load can be applied by hydraulically jacking against a weighted box or platform, or against a girder secured by anchor piles placed in the ground outside the influence of the test pile.[1]

Dynamic load test[edit]

Dynamic load tests generally consist of rapidly loading a pile and measuring the acceleration and displacement of the pile. Dynamic load testing is a fast and effective method of assessing foundation bearing capacity that requires instrumenting a deep foundation with accelerometers and strain transducers and analyzing data collected by these sensors. It may be performed on driven piles, drilled shafts and other cast in place foundations. In addition to bearing capacity, Dynamic Load Testing gives information on resistance distribution (shaft resistance and end bearing) and evaluates the shape and integrity of the foundation element. The foundation bearing capacity results obtained with dynamic load tests sometimes correlate well with the results of static load tests performed on the same foundation element.

Analysis of load tests[edit]

Analysis of load tests can be performed in several ways. The method utilized may produce different results from the same data.
