User:Zarbat/Issues/"Indigenous Australians" or "Australian Aboriginals"

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I prefer using the adjective "Indigenous Australian", as opposed to "Australian Aboriginal", when discussing issues related to Indigenous Australians (exceptions are of course possible). Here are some reasons:

  • As described here, the two terms are not the same. Indigenous Australians is more general. It includes Australian Aborigines. It also includes Torres Strait Islanders, who (usually) aren't labeled Australian Aboriginals.
  • "Indigenous Australian" is a lot more consistent than "Australian Aboriginal". Look at the title of all the other articles having to do with Indigenous Australians.
  • Some consider the term "Aboriginal" offensive.
