Jazz Instruments[edit]
During the Jazz Age people would us many different instruments, but the main instrument group jazz artist would use was the brass instruments.A vary communally used instrument was the saxophone.The saxophone is a hybrid wooden instrument.The mouthpiece is like the clarinet its wooden. The saxophone was many used in the military or in dance bands. Adolphe Sax created the saxophone in the 1840s, there are four members of the saxophone family. The soprano, the alto, the tenor, and the baritone,[1] The trumpet was also an instrument that was used during the jazz age. the sound of a trumpet could be changed by placing mutes in the bell. because the trumpet had such a variety of tones than any other instruments in the orchestra it was more popular in jazz,[2]
Jazz Artist[edit]
Lois Armstrong was nicknamed "Stachmo",and was born and grew up in New Orleans, where he learned to sing and play the trumpet.he made his first record preformed with King Oliver and Fletcher Henderson. he made his first famous records in 1925-8, called the "Hot Five" and "Hot Seven". in the 1930s he started big bands but ended up with small groups. he also was a great singer. he would sing words with no meaning or nonsense know as a "scat' singing. Another jazz artist was Edward Kennedy Ellington. he was born in Washington. D.C. He would paint sings during the day and play music in the clubs at night. He and a few other musicians decided to move to New York to start up a band. he was an excellent pianist, but his greatest talent was as a band leader, composer, and arranger.Him and his band stayed together all the way to his death at age 75.[3]

In the 1920s negros all around America were mistreated. Slavery was ended but some whites still believed that they were better than blacks. during slavery days blacks were surrounded by protestant churches,because of this they would worship also. Negros would sing songs to praise the Lord. This influence lead to them singing more and more, as they walked around,even as they worked. showing passion through song was a way Negros talked to the whole world. The plantation dancing and folk songs contributed to the birth of jazz also. Ragtime which originated in St. Louis was a music group that also started at this time. Blues swept throughout the south. it was a mournful scale and a repetitive harmonies that shaped jazz. Jazz was started in New Orleans. played at funerals and parades people called this classic jazz. It was started in the 1990's in the cities. [4] Jazz Babies and Flappers generally disdained convention and did as they pleases. The musical forms that most impacted the 1910s was ragtime, blues, and jazz. They rose from the African American community and are recognized as distinctly original American art forms. [5]
Summary[edit]
Jazz was a form of music that allowed people to express their feelings. African Americans struggled through slavery and through civil rights. As time went on they started to be more appreciated. Jazz was a time when Americans were doing a lot of new and different things. Ragtime was one of them. Artist like Louis Armstrong and Edward Kennedy Ellington where great jazz figures and they helped mold the jazz we know today.
