Since Hakuchō and Super Hakuchō services were discontinued on 21 March 2016,[3] the 789-0 series sets underwent several modifications, including the removal of automatic train control systems[4] and addition of full-colour LED destination displays.[5]
On 16 December 2016, for its March 2017 timetable revision, JR Hokkaido announced that the 789-0 series fleet would return to service on Lilac limited express services.[6]
