Robby Bambata[edit]

Robert Luht, also known by his stage name Robby Bambata (sometimes referred to as South-Dwa [1]), is an Estonian producer, beatmaker, and rapper. Born and raised bilingual in Sindi, Estonia, speaking both Estonian and Russian, Bambata has contributed to the local music scene, focusing on the genres of hip-hop and rap-rock. He is known for founding the Estonian-Russian speaking hip-hop band South-Dwa, its subsequent merger into the collective 7NS2 [2], and for his role in transforming the Estonian rock band Driven [3] into a rap-rock ensemble.

Robby Bambata's musical career includes producing tracks that not only received radio and TV play but also featured in music charts. His work in producing beats has led to collaborations with well-known Estonian artists such as Genka, Okym Riim, Wild Disease (Põhja-Tallinn), s-Poom, and Fast-K.

Career[edit]

South-Dwa (2002–2013)[edit]

Influenced by prominent groups like Mobb Deep and Wu-Tang Clan, Robby Bambata noticed that local music lacked the fluency and style of US hip-hop. Initially skeptical about replicating such rhymes, Bambata began exploring digital music creation, starting with the then-popular genre of trance music.

His perspective shifted upon encountering the work of an established Russian hip-hop band Kasta. Impressed by their sophisticated rhyming techniques, Bambata gained both confidence and inspiration to pursue his passion in hip-hop as a composer and MC.

Bambata's early forays into beat-making involved creating sketches based on samples from childhood vinyl records featuring fairy tales. Sharing these beats with friends, and subsequently with aspiring rappers from the neighboring city of Pärnu, led to the formation of a collaborative ensemble. This group eventually became known as South-Dwa, a name symbolizing their origin. "Dwa" means "two" in Russian, and "South" refers to Pärnu, often regarded as the southern capital of Estonia.

Driven (2009–2013)[edit]

Robby Bambata began to innovate in the music scene by experimenting with the fusion of hip-hop rhymes and rock music. This endeavor led to the collaboration with the Estonian rock band Driven, resulting in the track "Oma hinge nead." The song quickly resonated with Driven's fanbase, leading to a transformative partnership between Robby Bambata and Driven. The band retained its name but shifted its musical direction from pure rock to a rap-rock hybrid.

Following this successful collaboration, Driven, featuring Robby Bambata, released another song titled "Kloun." Accompanied by a music video, the track swiftly gained popularity on YouTube, local rock radio stations, and television, marking a significant milestone in the band's career.

Simultaneously, Driven, with its expanding repertoire, performed across Estonia, engaging audiences with their unique blend of genres. Concurrently, the band focused on developing their joint album "Tulevik on nüüd" showcasing their commitment to the evolving rap-rock style.

In 2011, Driven participated in the Jägermeister Rock Liiga, a prestigious rock-music competition, where they achieved third place.

7NS2 (2010–2013)[edit]

7NS2, a hip-hop group, was formed following the merger of artists South-Dwa and 7N, also known by the stage name Jura Napas. This formation led to the creation of a new musical entity in the Estonian hip-hop scene. The group's initial album, "Poproboval-Popalsa," was released shortly after their formation, marking their debut in the music industry.

The group has since been a regular participant in major hip-hop festivals in Estonia, indicating their active involvement in the national music scene.
