The video games listed here are those that have received the most recognition, acclaim, and praise through out the years either for their innovation and historical influence on gaming or for their level of fun and approachability. While not at all definitive the following list gives a rough estimate of the most critically acclaimed games of all time by compiling how often they have appeared in the top ten lists out of a group of over 43 top ten list compiled compromising of such groups as Metacritic.com, Gamerankings.com, Genuiss book of World Records:Gamers Edition, Gameinformer, IGN.com, and many others. [1] Note this list is heavily biased towards older games as they have been able to receive recognition for longer periods of time.
Current Trends[edit]
Action games are the most often acclaimed with sports being the least(with rare exception of Tecmo Bowl and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 which received some recognition). Although popular himself the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise does not make this list and has apparently not left behind much of a legacy(probably due to its poor transition from 2D to 3D games)[2]. Tetris is the only really widely acclaimed puzzle game. The character most recurring in highly acclaimed games is Link closely followed by Mario. Despite being the first true video game Pong is not often recognized as one of the greatest games of all time, and games like Pacman and Space Invaders do not receive much attention either in Top 10 lists. If current trends continue then it appears either Half-life 2 or one of the Grand Theft Auto games will eventually be one of the games most often recognized as being among the best.
