My great thanks!

Milhist Coordinator elections
Thank you very much for your much appreciated support in the recently concluded September 2008 Military History Wikiproject Coordinator Elections. I was thoroughly surprised to walk away with a position of Coordinator. Thank-you for your support, and I assure you that I will do my best to serve this spectacular project well. Esteemed Regards, Cam (Chat) 00:49, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Romaioi

I never had a problem with the guy really, I just got kind of frustrated that after it all died down he raked it up again. (I figured he wasn't doing himself any favours.) As you can see from recent events, none his fault, there has been a deliberate attempt to implicate him again. Thats the sock puppeteers style, he tries to involve editors he thinks might be sympathetic to him. Justin talk 15:42, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

That sockpuppeteer is a reeeeeal jerk, isn't he? Ugh. —the_ed17— 17:08, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Cheers Ed

I haven forgotten about Shannara. I've been chilling from Wikipedia and have a massive deadline to make at work, plus we are moving house in a few weeks (lots of prep involved). Its an unkanny coincidence that I browsed my talk page yesterday and found some comments from the sock. Unkanny more so because its the second time, from memory, that I have looked at a page after a break to find fresh comments by him/her. Cheers Romaioi (talk) 16:00, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Oof. Good luck, my friend, with all of the RL events....
Don't worry about Shannara article here on Wikipedia until you've taken care of all of that...Wikipedia will be here after you move! (Don't feel bad because you said that you would help and you can't; RL events take precedence over Wiki matters, I know.) Cheers! —the_ed17— 17:07, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Hey mate, cheers again. Looks like I managed to find time to do some stuff yesterday anyway. I was left to take care of the bub for the day and got lots of practice typing with one hand. In regards to Justin's comments above. He certainly means well, I agree, but there has been a persistent mischaracterisation of my actions and unacknowledgment of all evidence that clearly shows that I did not do what others say (including the small things such as reverting sock edits). False accusations, WQAs, ANI's, MFQ's etc have been equally frustrating for me. Particularly when most of my contributions have been in the form of adding citations, references and the like. Justin was certainly right about me being in the wrong place at the wrong time - it was a matter if that and the accuser not looking closely enough. One of the topics that the socks keep harping about is one that does need addressing. Unfortunately, the behaviour of the socks has severely tarnished the topic. Equally unfortunately, others who may know something about the topic and attempt to contribute run the risk of automatically being labelled as socks themselves. Whilst Justin justifiably feels that the socks are responsible for most of the grief I experienced, I feel that they are only partly responsible (their "attempts to implicate" me were plainly obvious). Most of the responsibility lies squarely with my accuser. At any rate, I am certainly happy that Justin has his eye on the latest attempts of the socks - it will prevent a third accusation against myself. Cheers Romaioi (talk) 11:19, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, just don't worry about sockpuppets anymore. =) Just go out and have fun on articles that you take an interest in! If you keep focused on those accusations, it will slowly begin to ruin your 'life' on Wikipedia... Anyway, good luck with the kid :D and I hope to talk to you soon! Cheers, —the_ed17— 19:22, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Carrier Air Wing Six

Please make sure the tables in Carrier Air Wing Six have cites, so I can award it GA. Wandalstouring (talk) 08:36, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello, ed7! Hope all is well. I have revised the tables in Carrier Air Wing Six with the appropriate footnote citations.Marcd30319 (talk) 18:38, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi! Yeah, everything's fine (for the most part)! I left a note on Wandal's talk page telling him that it was done. =) —the_ed17— 18:44, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Operation Strikeback/GA1 Review

Thanks for the heads-up! I am wading through the GA1 review. Most of the issues I am confident of resolution, but I am concerned about the citation issues for the warship lists. I get in touch when I get to that stage. Marcd30319 (talk) 18:38, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Alright, just tell me where I can help, and I'll be there. Cheers! —the_ed17— 18:45, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Hello! I have addressed the various citation and quotation issues in the [Summary talk section]. The big question is citing the various ships and aircraft listings. The GA1 reviews assert that the [method of citation] does not conform to MOS standards. How can this be done correctly? By individuals citaton for each ship and air squadron? You suggestions, please. Marcd30319 (talk) 13:23, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Edits to USS West Gate (ID-3216)

Thanks for catching the missing s in your edit to USS West Gate (ID-3216). I beg to differ, however, on the applicability of WP:OVERLINK to the word materiel. As I'm sure you are aware, materiel is a specialized term that, while familiar to those of use who edit and write military history articles, is not necessarily familiar to non-MH readers. I've found in articles that I've written and/or those that I watch, that when it is not linked, it often gets "corrected" by well-meaning editors who confuse it for a typo of the word material. By the way, if you're using a script to look for overlinks, I'd suggest removing materiel from the list. — Bellhalla (talk) 11:37, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Okay! =) Thanks for not just changing it back without telling me, because I would have kept de-linking materiel whenever I saw it! :D But no, I'm not using a script; I just remove terms whenever I see them, so occasionally I may be wrong... Cheers! —the_ed17— 16:59, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't want to interject myself into this discussion, but the use of materiel is approprite when used in conjunction with the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy; when used with the U.S. Navy, the appropriate term is material. Marcd30319 (talk) 11:03, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
In the context of this article, where "West Gate took on 6,700 tons of cargo that included locomotives, steel rails, and other materiel for the United States Army …", I believe that the correct word is being employed, though I'm not sure I understand the distinction in your remarks. — Bellhalla (talk) 12:17, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
Very good point. BTW - the article is excellent. Marcd30319 (talk) 17:49, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
You are right, Bellhalla. Thanks for correcting me. =) —the_ed17— 19:19, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Carrier Air Wing Six

Carrier Air Wing Six has been nominated for a good article reassessment. Articles are typically reviewed for one week. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to good article quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status will be removed from the article. Reviewers' concerns are here. —Mattisse (Talk) 17:31, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

The ed17, I have addressed the above concerns to the best of my ability. Cold you review and as needed, do any clean-up for the fotnotes? Thanks! Marcd30319 (talk) 21:35, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Am doing now. =) Cheers! —the_ed17— 23:19, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Many thanks for your assistance. I read the latest GA reassessment comments. It looks like that Mattisse is not persuaded by the expanded narrative or the coninued incorporation of the extant tables and lists. Do you want to pull the trigger for the WP:GAR review? Armor? I don't think I changed it, but I'd've relied on Fitzsimons as cited. Not to say that can't be wrong... (His tech editor was Anthony Preston, who I'd rely on generally.) The NYT piece does contradict, but I frankly would want a better source, say Jane's, before changing it; mainstream media aren't notorious for getting tech specs right, especially so far back. I was wondering if you were going to see that edit summary...the_ed17— 05:02, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
No classical, eh? I getcha - I used to be ambivalent about it, too. But...now, I hate to sound like those evangelicals who try to convert every secularist they see, but have a looksee at my favorite piece ever. You may or may not like it, but I'm curious to see what you think. Tell me your honest opinion afterward, please. :) And you can also tell me if I'm being a pushover for this...La Pianista (TCSR) 19:55, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

(outdent) :D Pretty cool. Not something I listen to every day, but every once in awhile it is awesome to hear that. Amazing how people can ecen play that! O.O No, you aren't being a pushover—if you like classical, you will probably like that. =) —the_ed17— 21:23, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

MilHist + Novels shared task force

my original comment, left on Kevin's talkpage

"Seeing the interests of the_ed17 above it would be nice to co-ordinate with WP:MILHIST more and maybe get a joint military novel / short story literature task force on the cards." Hmm not a bad idea! There are a lot of military history novels...Tom Clancy comes to the forefront of my mind, with Dale Brown, Alistair MacLean, Stephen Coonts and Joseph Heller next in line..... [and we might get more interest in WP:NOVELS... :)] Anyway, cheers! —the_ed17— 15:46, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

If you think this is a good notion how best do you think we should go about it. Does MilHist have any similar group currently. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:52, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

I've got class now; I'll reply in an hour. Cheers! —the_ed17— 15:53, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Alright, class got out early. MILHIST does have a similar group...I didn't think so, but then I spotted the War Films task force they share with the Films WikiProject. —the_ed17— 16:40, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
So we would need to promote the idea of a War fiction task force or something closely similar. Needs to be named to be a conjuction of the two projects interests. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 16:46, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Hmmm that is kinda awkward though...maybe "Fictional War novels task force" or "War novels task force"? —the_ed17— 16:48, 8 October 2008 (UTC) "Novels of War"? —the_ed17— 16:48, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
My thinking was to include all lengths of fictional narrative prose, inclusive of short stories, novellas and novels etc. Also "novels" are nearly always treated as fiction so both would be "almost" redundant. Unfortunately naming is important so we should get it right first time if we can. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 19:48, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Alright then, I suppose that accuracy is better than a slightly awkward choice of words, so I'll propose it at the [{WP:MILHIST]] talk page. Cheers! —the_ed17— 19:55, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Should we wait and get people interested first? —the_ed17— 19:57, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Go ahead and propose away. We need to get the ball rolling. How about MilHist. Perhaps we start it with tight MilHist style scope and then apporach about a sharing, or should we approach first? :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 07:43, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't know if MILHIST would do a task force like this....."Note that the project generally covers only those depictions for which a discussion of historical accuracy or real military influence is applicable. A distinction is therefore made between fictionalized depictions of historical warfare and purely invented depictions of fictional warfare; topics sufficiently divorced from actual history that a discussion of actual military history would no longer be relevant to them—such as futuristic warfare in Star Wars—are not considered to be within the project's scope. However, songs and music with long military associations—for example, It's a long way to Tipperary and Lili Marleen—are within the project's scope." (WP:MILHIST#SCOPE)Ed 17 for President Vote for Ed 03:14, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Agreed I would see SF and alternate history as separate to the scope of this group. In other words fiction based on real wars, real conflicts albeit fictional accounts (with some invention). So I don't see we should have a problem. Military themed stories might be more tricky. Drama based and Sandhurst or West Point for example. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 07:43, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

The Discussion (not part of episode)

All right...so what have we got here? How about this episode be centered on edit summaries? Since, of course, they are only used for the most serious of occasions. :D :D :D —La Pianista (TCSR) 01:36, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

The episode

Ed, I need help! Oh, someone save me! My head has imploded out of pure frustration! The automatic edit summary mechanism in my preferences didn't work, and my last edit went unsummarized! Now, when I go through my contribs via Wannabe Kate's, there's that annoying thin red line in my normally perfect sea of green! 'Tis truly maddening! Oh, what shall I do?! </damsel in distress> —La Pianista (TCSR) 03:32, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

If your head imploded, how can I help? You're virtually a chicken with your head cut off! and then there is the small problem that you are lying...(I looked at your contribs...)
Secondly, since when have you been a "damsel" Ms. I'm a tuff gangsta Pianista! —Ed 17 for President Vote for Ed 03:41, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Chickens can run with their heads cut off. Pianistas can sign guestbooks with their heads imploded. Simple as that.
The damsel façade is for this episode only, Ed. So are ya gonna help me or sit around and add "Nerd site(s) for people interested in battleships"? —La Pianista (TCSR) 03:50, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Well, sure, but chickens can't think. No they can't.
Oh sorrrry. And nice link...meeeeeean. :D
Anyway, I'll ride in on a white stallion with a jousting lance to save you! I will run down that red line and spear it through its evil heart, and it will be gone forever, never to return. I can't hear them, but my computer's speech system will read it to me. And my touch-typing is superb - one googol of words per minute, if you were planning to ask. Thus, my communication with you is almost completely the same as to begin with. And, you ask, why am I not dead?
In my early years (beginning from the day I first took my piano lesson) I have been drinking the elixir of life. So sue me - I am virtually immortal. 14"/45 caliber guns

As a battleship fan and a coordinator I feel that I too have a stake in Nevadas FAC, even if only by extension of the virtue of the fact that I work with the project :) One advantage to having written most of the battleship articles for the Iowa class is that I know a few sites that have reliable info on the various aspects of battleship weaponry. navweapons.com is an outstanding reliable source for the guns used by most US battleships, so if you plan to write more battleship articles it may be a good idea to bookmark the page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TomStar81 (talkcontribs)

...As for the DYK hook, I am not picky, "whatever works", thats my motto. And you deserve some of the vredit since it was your Nevada FAC that compelled me to write the article. I'm not picky about who gets the credit either :) TomStar81 (Talk) 01:01, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Wandal. I'll get to it as soon as I can. I shouldn't be on this right now (Why? See the next two sentences.) Anyway, I've got a serious RL issue that was just dropped upon me when I got here, but I'll be back on Sunday/Monday. Sometimes NOT knowing is best. That way what you do is totally neutral and that's what that article needs more than anything at the moment - neutrality. Like a lot of articles connected to the Irish Troubles it's been the subject of a lot of controversy. Sometimes I wish I knew nothing about the regiment either LOL. Re: USS New Jersey

Actually I agree with the IP rational, we really should not be editting the intro too much since readers who look at the mainpage article and read the article in its entirety expect that the summary on the main page and the intro to the article will be mroe or less the same. I would be willing to reconsider the change after the passing of the article though, since the limelight will have passed and the intro will not need to be kept consistant for the TFA blurb. Would that be fair? TomStar81 (Talk) 19:00, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

No, it's really no problem. =) I just wanted to know which one you liked more, and I about to revert back to my version just because it is mine! Good luck tomorrow, and I'll help with any vandalism I see. Cheers! —Ed 17 for President Vote for Ed 19:35, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

After New Jersey leaves the mainpage it will be nessicary for us to check all the article linked to USS New Jersey and ensure that no subtle vandalism crept into them by means of the USS New Jersey article. Are you willing to help? TomStar81 (Talk) 19:58, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Sure! That will be fun... :) —Ed 17 for President Vote for Ed 20:15, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the barnstar—it was a pleasure to work on a ship article at FAC. Incidentally, I just came across a review for a book on Nevada that was published earlier this year. Not suggesting it as a source or anything; just thought you'd probably want to read it :) Maralia (talk) 04:56, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

One thing you learn about moving articles through the assessment scheme is that when the time comes to go through GA, A, and FACs you are never really ready, you are just sort of prepared, and s/he who is more prepared is s/he who is poised to succed. In any case, thanks for the award. :) TomStar81 (Talk) 07:22, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
