Max Rischart’s Backhaus KG is a German bakery based in Munich. Founded in 1883 by Max Rischart, it is still family-owned and consists of 15 bakeries in Munich with approx. 8 million customers yearly. This includes Germany's most frequented bakery at the Marienplatz which is also the company's headquarters. Since 2009, Rischart's CEO is Magnus Müller-Richart.

In 1883, Max Rischart opened the first bakery in the Ickstattstraße in Munich. In 1896, he bought the bakery in the Fraunhoferstraße 44. His son, Max Rischart jun., entered the family business in 1906.The company bought the store at Marienplatz 18, today's headquarters, in 1932. Eight years later, in 1940, Max Richart jun.'s only child, his daughter, married baker Franz Müller and they took over the company. Allied bombs during World War II destroyed both the bakeries at Fraunhoferstraße and Marienplatz in 1944 and 1945 but the houses were rebuilt after the war. In 1973, Gerhard Müller-Rischart became CEO of the company, making him the fourth generation to run Rischart. Under his leadership, the bakery's factory moved to Buttermelcherstraße 16 in Munich's Gärtnerplatzviertel, a short distance from the Marienplatz store.[1] It is the only bakery whose factory is still in the heart of the city to avoid long distances when supplying the different stores.

In 2007, the first Richart Oktoberfest tent, named Café Kaiserschmarrn, was opened where, in remembrance that the first Oktoberfest was a wedding celebration, the company is selling wedding cake. Two years later, current CEO Magnus Müller-Rischart, son of Gerhard, took over the company. Gerhard Müller-Rischart was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2015 for his achievements.

Architecture[edit]

The architecture of Rischart stores won several awards, such as the facade award of the city of Munich for the Marienplatz store. Between 1979 and 1982, Rischart built a new factory near headquarters designed by Uwe Kiessler, which was awarded the Bavarian BDA award, the steel construction award and the Mies-van-der-Rohe award. When the production facilities had to be increased in 1990, the changes were again awarded the Bavarian BDA award.
