Early life and background[edit]

Zoe Saldana was born on June 19, 1978 in Passaic, New Jersey[1] to Asalia Nazario and Aridio Saldaña.[2] Her mother is Puerto Rican, while her father is Dominican.[2]

Career[edit]

1999–2008: Early work[edit]

She then appeared in the film Crossroads.[3] It featured her co-starring alongside Britney Spears and Taryn Manning as three best friends taking on a road trip.[4] Despite being a commercial success, grossing US$61.1 million at the box office,[5] Critical reception was most negative; review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes labeled the film as being "for Britney [Spears] fans only".[6][7]

2009–2013: Star Trek, Avatar, and career breakthrough[edit]

Saldaña first starred in the 2009 film Star Trek, playing Nyota Uhura. Her mother was a fan of the franchise.[8] Saldaña's final film appearance that year was in James Cameron's Avatar. She played the role of Neytiri, a princess in a Na'vi clan. During production, she helped actors in screen testing for the role of Jake Sully, which eventually went to actor Sam Worthington.[9] The film became her biggest commercial success to date, grossing over US$2.9 billion at the box-office, thus becoming the highest-grossing film of all time.[b][c]
