Toonami India was a 24-hour channel in India that started on February 26, 2015. The channel was initially dedicated to bringing high-octane animated action to children, superhero fans and their families across the country. However, in 2017, the channel was rebranded as a classic animation channel, airing shows mostly from Cartoon Network and Hanna-Barbera's library, while still airing a handful of action-anime series like Dragon Ball Super. The channel was broadcast in English from its launch until the channel closed on May 15, 2018. However, on 22 August 2016, the channel started broadcasting in Hindi from 6-8 pm each day.

Toonami was previously a programming block of Cartoon Network that aired on Cartoon Network in India from 2001 to 2008. For most of its run, the Toonami India block aired three times a day with an initial block, an afternoon block, and a late-night block. Most of the block's programming included Japanese anime, such as Dragon Ball Zee and Cardcapter, as well as some North American animated series, such as Batman Beyond and Max Steele.

History[edit]

Cartoon Network blocks[edit]

The block premiered as a 1-hour weekend block, airing twice a day on Saturdays and Sundays. In mid-2003, the 1-hour block began airing twice a day on weekdays, at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. By the end of 2003, a late-night Toonami block had also been added to the weekday Toonami program, which aired from 10-11 p.m. In November 2004, Toonami's late-night block began airing at 8 pm.

On November 6, 2006, the block was rebranded "Toonamy: Game On". To coincide with the rebrand, a seven-city live tour was launched, giving children a chance to personally experience the show shown in the action block. The cities visited during the visit included: Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Ludhiana. Viewers can also participate in an on-air competition, in which prizes are given each week. The prizes include: Toonami watches, lots of Pokémon gifts, cybergiants and an Xbox 360 gaming console
