Introduction

Like it or not, Wikipedia has political trends on it. Not conservative versus liberal, but trends that deal entirely with how the Wiki should be run. So what do you do with politics? If you're me and you're curious, you make statistical models of it.

In this Wikipolitical Compass, I've followed the example of Political Survey, and done something resembling a principal components analysis using a readily available source of Wikipolitical data: the votes that people cast on Requests for Adminship. The result plots both voters and candidates on a set of orthogonal axes; these axes estimate the way the voter will vote, or the kind of votes that the candidate will receive.

It would hypothetically be possible to do this with another source of votes, such as WP:AFD, but I haven't written the script that would extract those votes.

Warning to the Wikipolitically correct: I do not use the term "!vote" here. I happen to think it's an awkward bit of doublespeak; more importantly, to make this statistical model, I'm assuming that the things people post on RfA are actual votes, intended to increase or decrease the chance that a candidate will be promoted to an admin. Math doesn't know what a "discussion" is anyway.

This should go without saying, but do not use this as a voting guide for future RfAs! Voting based on what a somewhat inscrutable statistical algorithm tells you is worse than voting based on what an edit counter tells you.

Method

I created a matrix of voters and candidates, covering all voters who voted in at least 5 RfAs from January 1, 2007 to May 7, 2007, and all candidates who received at least 5 votes in that time. An entry in this matrix is 1 if the voter voted for that candidate, -1 if the voter voted against that candidate, and 0 if the voter voted neutral or did not vote or that candidate.

I then ran this matrix through a singular value decomposition. This turns out to be roughly the same as the "covariance method" described at principal components analysis, I think, except I don't understand that article and I do understand SVDs. The analysis was done using Pylab, an excellent package of Python software, hooked into the Pywikipedia bot (in read-only mode, of course).

The result is a set of independent axes -- as many axes as there are candidates, in fact, but they're sorted in order of significance. Looking at only the most significant axes gives a way to approximate the way people will vote. The axes don't get labeled with what they mean, of course, so next I have to sift through the data and try to extract some meaning from it.

I plot the average vote cast by each voter, and the average vote received by each candidate, on these axes, and normalize them so that the most extreme voter or candidate is at -10 or 10. (I first tried just plotting the raw vectors that came out, which correspond to total votes and not averages, but the results tended to indicate how often people voted and not much else. The average is a way of assuming that you would vote the same way on other RfAs if you had the time.)

I'll repeat the important part: the meaning of the axes is not set in stone. It's just my subjective interpretation of the data, and perhaps you could come up with a more accurate interpretation.

Axes

I number the axes starting from 0, because that's what Python does. So this makes axis 0 the most significant axis.

Axis 0: "Agreeability"

It's pretty clear what axis 0 means; the only challenge is coming up with a non-loaded name for it. I'll try "agreeability".

Voters with high agreeability tend to follow the conventional wisdom in their votes. Voters with low agreeability tend to cast controversial votes, which may be "oppose" votes on a popular candidate, or "Moral support" votes on a candidate who is likely to fail.

Candidates with high agreeability tend to become admins.

Note that this isn't the same as "percentage" or "consensus", because it takes into account who your votes come from. If a "disagreeable" voter opposes you, for example, your agreeability goes up. It would be a terrible measure for who should become an admin, but it's a pretty strong predictor of who does become an admin. (Everyone with agreeability greater than 4 was promoted, as well as a few scattered people with less).

A candidate scoring low on this axis also isn't the same as being unanimously opposed. If everyone from all corners of the compass opposes you, you end up near the middle.

This axis is the X-axis of the graphs below.

Axis 1: Time

The second most significant axis turned out to be quite boring. It's a time axis. Voters who voted more toward January 2007 were on one end, and voters who voted more recently were on the other. Same with when people ran for admin.

I'm not presenting the results on the time axis here. However, it's reassuring to know that axis is there, because it ensures that the other axes are independent of time.

Axis 2: "Balance"

(σ = 16.6) If I'm being charitable about what this axis means, I'll call it "balance". A candidate who scores high on this axis is everything to everyone. He's run the Adminship Pentathlon (article writing, RC patrol, XfD, policy discussion, and dispute resolution), he abstains from userboxes, and his edits are perfectly balanced across everyone's favorite namespaces. If I'm being uncharitable, I'd call this axis "shrubbery" instead.

A candidate who scores low on this axis tends to specialize in one area of Wikipedia. Supporters admire them for what they do, while opposers decry their lack of experience in other areas.

Voters who score high on this axis are those who support "balanced" candidates (or, uh, demand shrubberies). Voters who score low on this axis support specialists.

This axis is more subtle than the others, and perhaps I'm coloring my analysis of it with what I expected to find. Feel free to find a better explanation and mention it on the talk page.

More axes

The space of RfA votes is not two- or three-dimensional. There are many more axes, almost as significant as the top three I've described, but I have no idea what they mean.

Okay, this is the cool part.

The left graph plots the voters, with "agreeability" on the X-axis and "balance" on the Y-axis. Ordinary users are plotted in blue, while admins are plotted in rouge. (In particular, this indicates people who are currently admins, as of May 2007.)

The right graph plots the candidates on the same axes. Successful candidacies are plotted in green, and unsuccessful candidacies are plotted in yellow.

Into the fourth dimension

You want to see more axes than that? Even though I don't know what they mean? You got it. These images plot the same kind of data with axis 3 on the X-axis and axis 4 on the Y-axis.

Analysis

The voters are distributed all over the place, with most of them on the "agreeable" side (because if it weren't distributed like that, it would mean something besides "agreeability"!). There is a noticeable spread between those who demand balance and those who support specialists.

The candidates, meanwhile, fall into a really fascinating "swoosh" shape. There's a large cluster of people who become admins, with high agreeability (of course) and also high balance.

Meanwhile, there are almost no candidates in the bottom right corner (specialists with high agreeability). This is just a correlation, and I can't say what the causation is, but here are a couple of likely possibilities: either the axes stop being independent when the candidate actually has a chance of becoming an admin, so "balanced" candidates tend to get the "agreeable" votes; or there are specialists out there who would earn "agreeable" votes, but they don't run for adminship.

Another intriguing gap in the candidates is in the middle top. If my analysis of the axes is correct, this means candidates who achieve high balance are either shoo-ins for adminship, or very controversial, with basically no one in between.
