Cautions and Concerns[edit]

The phytic acid in soy products may inhibit the absorption of the nutrient iron[1]

Soy products contain a complex carbohydrate, oligosaccharides, which may cause gas, bloating and intestinal distress, and to rid of these complex sugars, soybean is often genetically modified. [2]

Estrogenic Isoflavones in soy products are a cause for concern in infants, but more research is needed.[3]

In Culture[edit]

Since soy, due to it's presumed estrogen isoflavones, is perceived to have an feminization effect on men who consume it, with a degree of validity[4] a pejorative term, "soy boy" has emerged to describe emasculated young men with asexual traits..[5]

Interspecies Consumption of Milk[edit]

Humans by far are the biggest consumers of other mammals milk. However, the consumption of milk between species is not unique to humans. Although the occurrence of this consumption is not vastly documented, interspecies milk consumption has been observed Red-billed oxpecker —a bird that can perch on the udders of an impala and suck its milk. In addition, Seagulls, Sheathbills and African Cats have been reported to directly pilfer milk from elephant seals’ teats.[6][7][8] So, while it’s quite rare, milk stealing does happen between certain other species in the wild.
