Suburb name is a suburb of place, New Zealand, under the local governance of the Auckland Council. Add in a relevant summary of the article at the top, without using references.

Etymology[edit]

Where did the name come from? This section can be a part of history if it's deeply linked to the founding (and not very important).

Natural history and/or geography[edit]

Talk about how the area formed, if it's important. Volcanoes, etc.

Talk about major defining natural features. Hills, rivers, etc. https://gazetteer.linz.govt.nz/ can be helpful.

Talk about what the suburb looked like prior to human settlement. Was it a taraire forest? Swampland? etc.

What kind of ecological area is the suburb? Are there endemic species, or locally common/nationally rare species?

Some of these details might be found in references about the wider area. There's a chance these references don't exist at all (especially for newer suburbs).

History[edit]

The bulk of the article. These things should be present:

  • Pre-European history. Ideally this should be sourced directly from iwi/hapū.
  • Mention traditional place names, such as names of pā/kāinga, or traditional names for natural features in the area. Are there any significant figures from history associated with the area?
  • Are there traditional pūrākau (traditional stories) associated with the area?
  • Why was this area important in pre-European times? Was it known for a resource, ancestor or waka?
  • Did mana whenua change over time?
  • What do documents from iwi/hapū emphasise? What do they find the most important?
  • Name the modern-day mana whenua groups in the area (and if multiple groups, try to source info from multiple groups).
  • Are there any archaeological reports? Sometimes notable historic sites aren't strongly linked to modern mana whenua (especially if the site was from 600 years ago)
  • What happened during the early colonial era. What kind of purchase/confiscation was involved.
  • Etymology of the suburb name
  • Why did people start living here?
  • When did the suburb develop and why? Were there any big industries? Was there a train station/road
  • Include content from local history books if possible.
  • What is the suburb like today?
  • Are there groups other than Māori/Pākehā who are important to the area? Does the area have significant Chinese, Pasifika history, etc? Is the area significant to a minority group (e.g. rainbow community, religious groups)?

The best places to find information from iwi/hapū are:

  • Waitangi Tribunal documents. All modern settlements have an established history section.
  • Iwi/hapū/marae websites
  • Council documents on new developments (eg new housing or road development). These almost always have historical context sections
  • Sometimes local history books have sections written by mana whenua groups, if they're newer books (older books often have nothing, or problematic histories)

Demographics[edit]

Landmarks and features[edit]

Notable buildings and sites[edit]

Talk about notable landmarks (eg churches or town halls), archaeological sites, the commercial centre of the suburb, etc. Note any Heritage buildings in the area.

Natural areas[edit]

If there are too many photos for the article, and they're not more appropriate in sections, add them to a gallery

Politics[edit]

Talk about local body politics. What local board/council is the suburb a part of, how do people vote for them. Talk about historical politics, especially if the suburb is a former borough/town that previously elected mayors or a town council.

Talk about national politics, if appropriate. If any current (or notably former) MPs have their offices within the suburb, mention this.

Education[edit]

Schools in suburb, plus schools with strong links to the suburb.

Public transport (eg train stations, major bus routes), possibly historic ones if they once existed. State highways, airports, etc.
