Activity[edit]

Participating in Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago[edit]

As of March 13, 2009 - Focused on setting the "importance" parameter for those ChicagoWikiProject articles that do not have any "importance" rating. By doing this I will be accomplishing two things: (1) learning to navigate and work within Wikipedia, and (2) helping the ChicagoWikiProject group by whittling down the number of articles that do not have any "importance" rating.

Oh yes, by reviewing the articles with "Chicago" in them, I will be also getting a feel for what people think Chicago is all about. I am very surprised at how quickly I found new bits of information about Chicago that I would not have uncovered if I had not been doing all this editing. It kind of feels like finding bits of precious metals in tons of overburden.
Follow the link ( Category:Unknown-importance Chicago articles )and scroll down to the section called - Pages in category "Unknown-importance Chicago articles". There you can get the count and list of the articles with which I'm working.

Progress - Clearing "Articles Needing to be reviewed for importance":[edit]

Date Number of Articles Needing to be reviewed for importance Number of Articles Needing to be reviewed for class
2009-04-01 9,616 (did not get)
2009-04-03 9,578 (did not get)
2009-04-14 9,399 {did not get}
2009-04-23 9,299 (did not get)
2009-05-05 9,199 4,664
2009-05-22 9,099 4,619
2009-06-10 8,999 4,566
2009-06-24 8,899 4,530
2009-08-09 9,900 3,674
2009-09-06 10,087 3,156
2009-09-06 Ceased to try and keep up. Will only do a manual Importance assessment when one is given within the "Importance Assessment Requests" subsection. A bot will automatically set defaults. This should greatly reduce the numbers.

Interest shifting toward working with categories. Seems categories are key to potential automation process whereby the minimum Importance assessment value would be set.

Category work[edit]

Pknkly (talk) 23:51, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Somehow, probably with the reading all the stuff related to the work with the Importance Assessment process, I got deeply envolved with categories. I think they may very well be the skeletal structure upon which the articles (the "flesh") hangs. Spending a whole lot of time on developing Personal Use Templates (which I will make public (or semi-public because they are specific to Chicago Project stuff) when I feel comfortable that they work and are well documented for use by others. I'm hacking my way through category templates, having input and "to do" items" related to category codes for Chicago Project, and input to development of bots that will perform Auto Class Assessment and Auto Minimal Importance Assignment. Somehow it is all involved with category codes.

I am also straightening out the subcategories and the articles assigned within category:Organizations based in Chicago.

Very involved with categories, especially for the Chicago Project. Started to document how category pages and reports are used by the Chicago Project at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Categories. Hope to help other editors become better aquited with the Chicago Project's classification scheme.
Doing category clean up work that is tracked at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Categories/Category clean up. Lots of categories that need to be audited. Hope to get some help.

95% of Wiki time spent on developing Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Categories. The undertaking is much larger and more difficult than I expected. Finding processes that are no longer being used, but there are remnents of those processes. Also found processes that are sporadically used. I unknowingly document the dead end processes and then have to undo that documentation. Learning a lot as I try to find out what really is happening, what works, and what does not. Will emphasis what works and is generally followed.

Finally getting a block of time to see what is happening in Wiki. Seems its going to be like this for awhile. Will give what time I to the category work.

Pknkly (talk) 11:39, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Calling it quits. Just not getting or finding the time. If I do have the time, I'll find out and follow the instructions for shutting down my Wiki account.

Participating in Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Work via Wikiprojects[edit]

Joined it on April 4, 2009 with plans to help where possible. These activities may support my contribution to the ChicagoWickiProject effort.

Haven't been able to find something constructive thing to do. Maybe I'll stubble across something.

Reading the project articles and hope to understand the processes by which the activity within the ChicagoWikiProject are used by this project. It seems so confusing!

Pknkly (talk) 18:21, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
Good momentum picked up for this activity:
By reading, and on rare occassions contributing, to the articles about the processes being used for the project, I now have a better understanding of the relationship between the WP1.0 project and the Chicago Project.
My offer to beta test Version 0.7 was accepted - I will have less time for the Chicago Project.

Pknkly (talk) 05:44, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Received the beta of Ver 0.7. Will be spending most of the time on it.

Pknkly (talk) 11:44, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Until I get some more Wiki time I'm just not going to have time to cover this.

Pknkly (talk) 21:40, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Don't feel right about possibly misleading other project members, So, I've removed my name from the project. I'll rejoin if things change.

Editing Chicago[edit]

As of April 9, 2009, I looked into and decided to help out with the core ChicagoWikiProject article - Chicago. What a history and what potential! The article needs to reflect the exciting history, rich bounty of resources which includes us - the people, how we live and prosper. I hope to help move the article along so that it is seen as the pivotal article for our project group from which all the other Top Importance article would be linked. The Chicago article somehow becomes a TOC for all Chicago Top Importance articles.

Still enjoy editting the Chicgo article, but now I'm questioning if it is the core article for the ChicagoWikiProject. ----

Pknkly (talk) 15:29, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
I keep a watch on the article, but by the time I get to responding to issues with the article the other responsible editors have already done so. Good thing. The more watching the better.

Pknkly (talk) 11:47, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Even before the drastic reduction in Wiki time, I had to remove this from my watch list. Then, I was too consumed by the category work and now my just too consumed by the real world stuff. So, this is completely off my radar.

Participating in Call for proposals[edit]

Hope to contribute to the ideas with my participation. Pknkly (talk) 19:07, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Dead stop on this. No time.

Participating in Categories Project[edit]

The work I've done at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Categories drew me to this project. Hope to get to knew people with similar interests and use them as a resource to finish the work at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Categories. Its a complicated topic . Wonder if there is a project that already has a scheme document that can be adapted to Chicago Project.

Pknkly (talk) 11:52, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Whatever little time I can give will be directed toward category work. However, my interest doesn't seem so important as others' in keeping up the content of articles. That is how it should be. The articles and the acurate and well sourced content is the principal function of Wiki. Category and all the other stuff is secondary.

Pknkly (talk) 11:41, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Removed account from the project.
