Students working on class assignment in computer lab
Distance Education often does not look like this. In self-paced courses, the student is working alone.[1]

PBS NewsHour reported that other students meet with failure due to their own lack of motivation or self-discipline. Many cyber schools do not persistently attempt to intervene for a failing student who is taking their courses. This may result in a return to the traditional school.[1]

The NewsHour report also covered the criticism of PA-Cyber, a public virtual charter school, from the surrounding traditional school district superintendents. Much of the critique revolves around the state requirement for individual student's home school district to give money to PA-Cyber. Additionally, PA-Cyber students' state standardized test scores were below the state's average.[1] [2]
