Pemetrexed, sold under the brand name Alimta among others, is a medication used to treat mesothelioma and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).[2] It is used for mesothelioma which involves the pleura and cannot be removed by surgery.[3] It is given by gradual injection into a vein.[2]

Common side effects include fever, infection, inflammation of the mouth, rash, nausea, tiredness, shortness of breath, and chest pain.[3] Other side effects may include bone marrow suppression.[3] Use in pregnancy may harm the baby.[3] It works by blocking the creation of DNA and RNA by inhibiting thymidylate transferase.[4][2]

Pemetrexed was approved for medical use in the United States and Europe in 2004.[4][3] It is available as a generic medication.[2] In the United Kingdom 500 mg costs the NHS about £450 as of 2021.[2] This amount in the United States is about 3,700 USD.[5]
