Brivaracetam, sold under the brand name Briviact among others, is a medication used to treat epilepsy, specifically partial-onset seizures.[2] It is used in people over the age of 3 together with other epilepsy medicines.[2] It may be taken by mouth or injected into a vein.[4]

Common side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, tiredness, and nausea.[3] Other side effects may include suicide, psychosis, angioedema, and anxiety.[3] Use in pregnancy may harm the baby.[3] How it works is unclear; however, may related to synaptic vesicle protein 2A.[4] It is chemically similar to levetiracetam.[4]

Brivaracetam was approved for medical use in the United States and Europe in 2016.[3][2] In the United Kingdom 4 weeks of medications costs the NHS about £130 as of 2021.[5] This amount in the United States is about 1,200 USD.[6]
