Biete Medhane Alem[edit]

Biete Medhane Alem is an Orthodox underground monolith rock-cut church located in Lalibela, Ethiopia[1]. It was built during the Zagwe dynasty.[2] It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Lalibela.[3] Biete Medhane Alem (House of the Saviour of the World) is home to the Lalibela Cross.

The excavation of the churches is something of a mystery.[4]
