A Star Is Born is an upcoming American musical film telling the story of a young woman who enters show business, meets and falls in love with an established male star only to find her career ascending while his goes into decline. Beyoncé Knowles has been announced as the female lead and Clint Eastwood has been announced as the director.[1]

Production[edit]

Background[edit]

The film is a remake of three earlier versions:[1] the 1937 version was a drama starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March; 1954 version was a musical film starring Judy Garland and James Mason; 1976 version was another musical film starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.[2] By some accounts, this would be the fifth version of the story; George Cukor directed a 1932 film titled What Price Hollywood?, which had an identical plot to the first A Star is Born. The 1932 film starred Constance Bennett and Lowell Sherman.[3]

The script for the current version was written by Will Fetters and the screen adaptation will be produced by Billy Gerber, Basil Iwanyk and Jon Peters. Peters produced the 1976 version.[2] As stated by Digital Spy, Beyoncé's pregnancy could delay the film.[4]

Casting[edit]

Knowles had originally agreed to take on the role for this project back in 2008, but was rumored to have dropped out due to lengthy delays until the January 2011 announcement of Eastwood as the director. The male lead has not yet been determined for the project. Russell Crowe was formerly associated with the role, but pulled out.[1] Other names mentioned to be in consideration for the male lead include Will Smith, Sean Penn, Sean Combs, Jay-Z, Eddie Murphy, Robert Downey, Jr. and Jon Hamm.[3][5] In a 2011 Billboard cover story interview, Knowles noted that the role is "a dream come true" and that it was an honor to be working with Eastwood.[6] Although Will Smith was a serious contender to play the lead male role,[7] according to Nikki Finke of Deadline.com, in June 2011 Eastwood entered into talks with Leonardo DiCaprio to discuss the position.[8]
