Randall “Randy” Rudd[edit]

Randall Rudd (born October 25, 1951) is an American Filmmaker, Animator, Artist, Automatist and Professor. He has worked on films and radio since 1968.

His career spans a broad range of creative endeavors, from creating and directing thousands of broadcast projects, movie trailers, and feature movies, including directing his first feature movie while in high school. Rudd has created major theme park attractions and exhibits worldwide. Some of his innovations include being the first to direct Mickey Mouse in CGI for Disney, the first virtual reality cinematic experience, and the first recognized US automatist, creator of human-powered performing sculptures for museums nationwide. His film/video work culminated as a Creative Director at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood, the legendary Robert Abel & Associates, Energy Productions and Creative Alliance. Where he was responsible for creating, writing, producing and directing thousands of projects worldwide in all media. Randall is the recipient of many internationally acclaimed awards and honors, including Cannes Lion, Clio Awards, IAB, Addy Awards, Monitor and Broadcast Design Association. Rudd has appeared on camera as spokesperson for various businesses as well as voiced thousands of broadcast projects, including animating and performing as the voice for Little Caesar’s “Pizza-Pizza!” guy and the only known perverted Muppet, Gonzo.

Early Life[edit]

Rudd was born in Abilene, Texas.

Rudd fostered his interest in filmmaking and mechanics since inventing a working phonograph with TinkerToys at age five. He attended Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas, where he wrote and directed his first feature film at 18 years old. He continued filmmaking and teaching film while attending University of North Texas, and Texas Tech, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

CAREER[edit]

KLBK-TV[edit]

While a college student, Rudd worked as an independent filmmaker and became a cameraman/director at KLBK TV in Lubbock, Texas.

Texas National Productions[edit]

Rudd became Animation Director creating dozens of broadcast projects, including cartoon, animation and live-action projects. Recipient of 4 ADDY awards.

Hayes Productions[edit]

In 1980, Rudd was asked to form and head a computer animation department at Hayes Productions, considered one the premiere film production houses in the country. His department grew to over 14 animators within a little more than a year, making several early CGI innovations and winning major awards, including several ADDY awards. working on major campaigns for national and international campaigns, including Chiffon margarine, Tide, Hints from Heloise, etc.

Mirage Film Graphics and Computer Animation Rudd joined Mirage, one of the earliest companies to employ computer animation for the advertising and film markets. Outstanding projects include NBC’s Fall Campaign and Walt Disney On Ice. Rudd was awarded 4 ADDY awards.

Paramount Pictures / Omnibus[edit]

In 1985, Rudd was asked to become creative head of Ominbus, the computer animation department at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood. During his tenure, Rudd remained Creative Director through the acquisitions of Digital, Effects, Digital Productions and Robert Abel and Associates, bringing his company to the largest CGI/effects entity in the world. Rudd was creative director for Disneyland’s fist 4-D attraction, “Captain EO and the Space Knights” with George Lucas and Francis Coppola, starring Michael Jackson. Rudd also acted as creative director on such features and commercial project as “Chicken Little Walks Among Us!, Explorers, Flight of the Navigator, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Coming To America,” and he was the first to design and animate Disney’s Mickey Mouse in 3D CGI.

Post Paramount Career[edit]

Won Monitor award for designing and directing “Just Add Water” campaign, along with other award-winning national and international broadcast projects. He also conducted seminars on integration of CGI into visuals internationally.

Energy Productions

Won International Broadcast Association Award for ABC Network Graphics Campaign, and CBC Broadcast Graphics Award, created and produced Effects for Warner Bros. “Vice Versa” Award-winning Pirelli Tires “Leopard” commercial.

Creative Alliance TDK Audio commercial with “Sting” and several international broadcast projects for European broadcast network projects, including the award-winning campaign for Vlaamse Televisie Maatschappij. Rudd designed “The Lost Mine Train” attraction for a Belgian theme park,” and developed CGI implementation plans for Walt Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.”

Electric Ideas

As Creative Director, Rudd was responsible for creating and directing dozens of movie trailers for Disney, Miramax, and 20th Century Fox releases, including Pretty Woman, Tom and Jerry: The Movie,

The Three Musketeers, Into The West, The Opposite of Sex, Muppets Take Manhattan, in which Rudd voiced portions of Muppet “Gonzo’s” voice.

Rudd Creative

Runn won his first prestigious CLIO Award recipient for “United Way” campaign, Monitor award for Schlitterbahn Waterparks “Wading Pool” campaign, garnered 13 ADDY Awards and two national Addys. Rudd won his second CLIO for his “Bud Light World Cup Soccer” campaign and an International Broadcast Institute (IBI) award for “World’s Best Radio and Television of 1999.” His Suzuki “Bandit” campaign won the Hollywood Radio and Television Society Best Television Advertising” Award. Rudd animated and was voice for “Little Caesar’s “Pizza-Pizza!” man.

• Hollywood Radio and Television Society Best Television Advertising” Award for Suzuki “Bandit” motorcycle commercial.

• Broadcast Design Associates (BDA) Award for Canadian Broadcast Corporation On-Air Graphics Campaign.

• Rudd is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as well as the Producer’s Guild.
