NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018[edit]

Hello HitroMilanese, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

  • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

  • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

  • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

  • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

  • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

  • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
  • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

An edit I made on Muqawqis[edit]

Dear Hitro,

I just saw a message you left for me about an edit I supposedly made on the page ‘Muqawqis’. You told me as I didn’t leave a reason for editing it you have undone the edit. I cannot remember the edit I made so please can you remind me. Then I will be able to re-edit it and leave a good enough reason.

Thanks

@Dawudbryant: Hello Dawud, the message that you are referring to was sent 5 years back. Lot of changes have been made to the article since then. However, this is the change that you made to the article which I reverted back then because you removed content without providing good reason for removal. Thanks Hitro talk 06:47, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Best and fairest articles[edit]

Hey there – I apologise for moving the Adelaide best and fairest (AFL Women's) article back so hastily, as I didn't realise you had moved the page. However, I do think that the distinguisher "(AFL Women's)" is still required as part of the page title, as without it, the article could otherwise refer to the best and fairest award of any Adelaide sporting club, men's, women's or both – I also plan on doing this for all of the other clubs with AFL Women's teams and best and fairest awards which don't yet have an official name. 4TheWynne(talk)(contribs) 08:09, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, no problem, I do understand now that the distinguisher may be required when you come up with other articles on similar topic. Happy editing. Hitro talk 08:19, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Shqiprim Taipi[edit]

I do not understand why you have asked for the Wiki article of Shqiprim Taipi to be deleted, the Wiki article should not be deleted because Taipi has played and plays in a professional league as Macedonian First Football League and in June 2015, he has also signed a contract as a professional footballer.[1] and according to me it is better that the article be done draft article and not be deleted. Endritoxi (talk) 13:20, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

@Endritoxi:, Hello, as per WP:FPL, Macedonian First Football League and Football Superleague of Kosovo are not considered to be a fully professional league. Notability criteria at WP:NFOOTY suggests that the subject must appear at least once in a match of a fully professional league. I have draftified the article as of now. You may submit it anytime for another review by different reviewer. Thanks. Hitro talk 11:59, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

I'm sorry for the interference; but the player has made 7 appearances in UEFA Europa League for Shkëndija and has amassed 119 minutes. Its this enough to classify him for the article? Sadsadas (talk) 04:09, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

Such players, who have appeared in Europa league but have not appeared in a fully professional league, are not deemed notable. There was discussion about this issues here and in many other archived discussions. Anyhow, I will ping @S.A. Julio:, his views will be valuable on this matter. Hitro talk 15:25, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.12 30 July 2018[edit]

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. (Purge)

Hello HitroMilanese, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules
  • New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
  • Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
  • Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
Editathons
  • Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
The Signpost
  • The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. Habitas entry declined[edit]

Hi Hitro,

I was hoping to get a little more feedback on the entry for Habitas you declined earlier. I understand your argument, and I have made some changes to adjust but I feel stuck. I would love to be fully compliant with protocol here and would appreciate any pointers you could provide to make this submission work.

Thank you

Hello @Anni3carter:, the article at Wikipedia are written in neutral point of view without promoting the subject in any way. The version of the article that I reviewed was way too promotional. Lines like " experience hospitality group and global membership community" or "Habitas was founded in 2014 as an events company with a mission to bring people together around music, food, conversation and wellness" are not at all accepted while writing encyclopedic article. You may update the draft and resubmit it for review from different reviewer. Regards. Hitro talk 13:33, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Hello @HitroMilanese:,

Hepatitis B Foundation declined[edit]

Hello, I am trying to get further guidance on the feedback that you provided about this page. You state that the draft doesn't reference good sources and that the tone/pov are not correct. I'm not sure what to do with that. While a few of the sources are from the foundation itself, the vast majority come from publications ranging from local newspapers all the way up to white house press releases and references by CDC publications. I believe that it meets the notability requirement but I don't see what I could fix to change the "promotional tone." To the best of my ability, all statements are backed up by at least one source. Can you point out what specifically what kinds of things you mean so that I can fix them? Thanks for your time.JDS4399 (talk) 05:28, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Hello JDS4399, the version of the draft that I reviewed, contained multiple references from self published and primary sources which are not accepted at Wikipedia. The claims should be totally based on reliable references which must be independent of the subject. You may want to check WP:NORG for further info. Apart from that, statements like "The Hepatitis B Foundation provides services and outreach to local and international communities while their research arm focuses on scientific development" and "The Hepatitis B Foundation's hard work over multiple decades has not gone unnoticed by public officials and other organizations working in similar fields"" are not expected in an encyclopedic article. The aim of encyclopedia is to inform readers with verifiable contents. The statements like these are meant to promote the subject and do not adhere with neutral point of view policy. You may resubmit the draft after fixing those issues so that some other reviewer may review the draft. Thanks. Hitro talk 08:17, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

Invitation from Wikimedia Portugal[edit]

(English below)

Agradecemos desde já!

Hi! Wikimedia Portugal is the Portuguese chapter of Wikimedia, founded in 2009 and recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation. Our mission is to contribute to the general dissemination of knowledge and culture through the incentive to the collection and creation of content without restrictions on use, modification and distribution, and promote their difusion; we promote and support the Wikimedia Foundation projects, among which Wikipedia, with emphasis on projects in Portuguese and Mirandese.

We would like however to count on the support of (and in turn ourselves support) all volunteers that are citizens, resident, or simply interested in Portugal. Despite being founded in 2009, the chapter has gone through a long period of inactivity that we are trying to overcome. We have sent you this message to invite you, if you are interested, to enroll as associate to the chapter, demonstrate your support to the existence of a chapter in Portugal, and get involved in the discussion of future activities by registering in the mailing list. Recentely, the Wikimedia Affiliations Committee suspended support to Wikimedia Portugal pending, among other things, the support from the community of portuguese editors. Hi @HitroMilanese:. You placed a Speedy deletion notification for an image uploaded to Wikimedia Commons on my talkpage. I responded to the page File:Shivam Shankar Singh.jpeg but it was deleted. I'm extremely new to uploading to Wikimedia Commons and wanted to know if I can delete the notification that you left on my talkpage as the file itself has been deleted already? Man what are you speaking about?[edit]

I gave proper citation and that is web site of Serbian Armed Forces. And I as well have usage rights. What is concretely wrong about this Article?

@Nikolai011: It's good that you toned down this message. Do see WP:GNG. On English Wikipedia notability is asserted with help of multiple reliable and credible references where the subject has been covered in depth, above all, the references must be independent of the subject. Policies vary on different language Wikis. Serbian Wikipedia may allow this but not on English Wikipedia. Next time, if you want response then please make sure to sign your message with four tildes ~~~~. Thanks. Hitro talk 11:25, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
@HitroMilanese: So information on Serbian Armed Forces and its organization should be independent of SAF and MD? But at least, what do you want? Other sources?
Yes, multiple references in reliable and independent sources are required. Had this been a draft at WP:AFC, it would have been rejected in current form. And please sign the messages. Hitro talk 11:38, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Request to review your action of deleting the page of Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital which I created[edit]

Hello HitroMilanese,

I see that you have deleted the page 'Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akhand_Jyoti_Eye_Hospital) for the reason of 'Unambiguous advertising or promotion: no independent sources, no evidence of notability' on 2nd September, 2018 at 12.20. Can you please explain more of it?

I see there are following pages of organisations who are working for a social cause. Even there are organisations or institutions which are more of corporate than social cause driven. Please have a look at the pages:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aravind_Eye_Hospitals https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Agarwal%27s_Eye_Hospital https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankara_Nethralaya https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._V._Prasad_Eye_Institute https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Eye_Hospital_and_Institute

If above pages can exist on Wikipedia, why can't Akhand Jyoti. I would love to have a detail response from your you. I think a organisation which is doing such a marvellous job in India for the uplift of poor people and blind people, Wikipedia should recognise the organisation. If there is any specific way to create Wikipedia pages for such great organisations, please let me know. I would do the necessary changes or modifications. I just wonder if above stated organisations can have Wikipedia pages why can't Akhand Jyoti. Looking forward to your response.

Thanks, Abhijit — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2409:4064:58E:1688:E45B:64C8:4196:D29 (talk) 10:48, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello Abhijit, First of all see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. Keeping something because something similar exists, is not a valid point of inclusion at Wikipedia. However, those articles are not written in promotional tone. The one that you created was against the policy of neutral point of view and was totally promotional, such entries are taken as blatant advertisement or spamming. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, the content should be informational, it is not the place to promote any kind of business. I will suggest you to create article through WP:AFC process, a reviewer will review your draft before moving it to article space and will suggest for improvement if necessary. And about those articles, I will review them one by one later today. If any of them are against the policy, I will nominate them for deletion or trim them to the level of acceptance. I know getting article deleted can be disappointing, but in order to keep Wikipedia clean we need to do that. Warm regards. Hitro talk 11:11, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Shoichi Ida[edit]

@Satoshikyo: Hello there, the basis of decline was lack of references that I clearly mentioned in my comment. I will suggest you to add these references to the draft and submit again for review. References can be evaluated better on the draft instead of at my talk page. Regards. Hitro talk 14:52, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

Refimprove tag[edit]

Hi HitroMilanese, I've seen your refimprove tags ([3], [4]). But I must say that they are somehow not actual, these articles I took from Georgian wiki, and Georgian wiki used as a source Georgian Soviet Encyclopedia. These villages are far in mountains and mostly empty, you won't find any better source about them than Georgian Soviet Encyclopedia (unfortunately there are no digital version of them or in English). So would you mind if I remove the tags?--Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 08:54, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

As an additional source I can provide Soviet Topographic maps, but I am not sure how to include them in such articles.--Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 08:57, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
@Giorgi Balakhadze: Hello there, at English Wikipedia, every article should follow the notability guideline and verification policy so that the reader of the content can verify the factual accuracy of the claims. That is why I tagged those articles with refimprove. I do understand that finding sources may be difficult, however, those tags may attract different users who may provide references that we are unable to find right now. So, I will suggest you to let the tags stay, If you will remove them then I won't object either as I am concurring with your points. Thanks. Hitro talk 09:06, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

Need Assistance[edit]

Hi HirtroMilanese,

I have been on contributing on Wikipedia since a month. I contribute by providing references to unsourced statements and providing wikilinks to different page. What more could I do to assist and give more contributions? I have 2 more queries.

1) Can you please share some insight as to how to improve my writing, because I created an article write now with no motive of advertisement or promotion? It was just an information about the city of Bangalore since I recently visited there for traveling.

2) How can I reflect my edits and articles in Google. Since I love writing I thought this could also help me get some recognition and experience for my writing skills. Am I violating any laws of Wikipedia by doing so?

Thank you!!! Regards! --Rk566RUFine (talk) 09:32, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

Sayh Mudayrah[edit]

Hiya. I totally get why you'd move the article to draft, but it's part of a bigger and more frustrating conversation. Back in 2008, a user added pages to the UAE's emirates with place names sourced from a 1987 US gazetteer. I've been working on tidying Sharjah, Dubai and now Ajman. It's no surprise most of these are cruft, but they all got published as non-sourced pages of one line each, typically "x is a city in the UAE". Most aren't even places at all. The ONE missing place, which shows up on the Ajman infobox as having no link, was Sayh Mudayrah. I've AfDed many of the worst offenders and am now defending the AfD actions against users who want to KEEP the one line unsourced cruft places. I've added a one line, unsourced GOOD place and you've plonked it into the draft space. Nobody is going to write about Sayh Mudayrah, it's a small mountain community. Yet it remains a place in Ajman... My frustration, not yours, but I thought I'd vent anyway. Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 09:01, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello there, there is nothing to be frustrated. You just need to add a source and move the draft back to main space. Current policies and guidelines at Wikipedia related to geographic locations are mostly favoring retainer of such articles. And the burden to demonstrate verifiability lies with the editor who adds material to Wikipedia. Thanks. Hitro talk 09:36, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
Would this do the trick? https://placesmap.net/AE/Mudaryrah-Police-Station-194113/ Alexandermcnabb (talk) 10:01, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
No, this is not going to work. It is a very weak source, nothing more than a listing in a non-reliable website. Hitro talk 07:52, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018[edit]

Hello HitroMilanese, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
  • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
  • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
  • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
  • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
  • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

  • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
  • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
  • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
  • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
  • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
  • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
  • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
  • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
  • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

Mahanidhi Swami article[edit]

Hi there,

Thank you for reviewing the Mahanidhi Swami article. I have added two paragraphs including two sources: footnotes 6 and 9: an interview with The Baltimore Sun (newspaper) and an excerpt from a book that studies the Hare Krishna movement. As the subject (Mahanidhi Swami) does not travel from the village in which he lives, he might not attract so much publicity from different sources. Nevertheless, his influence and the importance of his contribution through his books and lectures made him one of the authorities for those interested in Gaudiya Vaishnavism. This can be proven by the book sales, the traffic on his website and views on SoundCloud.

What do you think? Do you have more tips for improving the article?

Thanks, Muuki --Muukifar (talk) 17:26, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello Muuki, Thank you for adding references. Your draft will be reviewed soon by a reviewer, they will leave any improvement suggestion, if required, else they will accept the article. Thanks. Hitro talk 06:01, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

Re: Tana-Beles interbasin water transfer[edit]

Hi, I've added some references to Draft:Tana-Beles_interbasin_water_transfer and submitted it for review as a stub. Hopefully this is enough, as otherwise I'm afraid Wikipedia's barrier for contribution of new water-infrastructure-related stubs is too high for me to contribute, and I would hesitate to encourage others given the amount of effort involved just to get a stub for a missing topic. - Josephguillaume (talk) 14:05, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Hello there, the draft has been reviewed and accepted. Thanks Hitro talk 14:34, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Hitro! I'll make sure to add references and a little more detail to new pages in future --Josephguillaume (talk) 07:12, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello HitroMilanese, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

Backlog

As of 21 October 2018, there are 3650 unreviewed articles and the backlog now stretches back 51 days.

Community Wishlist Proposal
Project updates
  • ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
  • There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.
