SADiLaR-Wikipedia-PanSALB (SWiP)

SWiP, is a collaborative effort by the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR), Wikipedia, and the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB), aims to promote indigenous languages online.

Launch and Objectives

SWiP was officially launched on Wednesday, 20 September 2023, at UNISA (Main Campus - Muckleneuk), Pretoria. While the launch event spotlighted isiNdebele to encourage Ndebele community participation in Wikipedia content creation, SWiP's broader mission is to enhance the digital presence of all South Africa's indigenous languages. By uniting indigenous language communities and equipping them with Wikipedia content creation and review skills, SWiP aims to collectively expand the digital footprint of these languages.

Project Duration

Scheduled to run from February 2024 to October 2024.

First Cycle: Wikipedia Authorship Training

The initial phase of the project focuses on comprehensive Wikipedia authorship training nationwide. Two-day authorship workshops will be held across six regions, targeting 10 universities with 20 participants per university. The first cycle of workshops will be conducted at the following universities:

1. University of Venda
2. University of Mpumalanga
3. Vaal University of Technology
4. Tshwane University of Technology
5. University of South Africa
6. Cape Peninsula University of Technology
7. University of Zululand
8. Central University of Technology
9. Sol Plaatje University
10. Walter Sisulu University

Through these workshops, SWiP seeks to empower participants to contribute meaningfully to South Africa's digital landscape, thereby enhancing linguistic diversity and cultural representation online.
