Salisbury Fire Department[edit]

The Salisbury Fire Department is a combination fire department that provides firefighting and fire protection services, along with technical rescue and emergency medical services, to the city of Salisbury and to Wicomico County through mutual aid agreements with county fire departments. It consists of three fire stations and approximately 200 personnel, along with over two dozen firefighting apparatus, ambulances, utility vehicles and watercraft. The mission of the Salisbury Fire Department is “to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of our community by providing prevention and mitigation of fire and life safety hazards in an effective and efficient manner”[2].

History[edit]

Following a series of fires in the mid-19th century, particularly one that occurred in 1860 that destroyed most of Salisbury, several saw mill owners and citizens initiated a fire subscription service on August 25, 1872, raising enough funds to purchase a small hand pump. However, in 1879, a fire began near the E.E. Jackson & Co. saw mill which threatened to engulf the town, and Salisbury requested immediate help from other towns on the peninsula. The city of Wilmington, Delaware, sent down several fire companies via fast train, along with modern steam-powered fire apparatuses, and with their help, the destruction of Salisbury was averted. Salisbury tax payers, impressed with the equipment and trained firefighters Wilmington had provided them, voted on August 28, 1879 to reorganize the subscription service into a municipal fire department, setting aside $4,100 to purchase a Silsby steam fire engine. A week later, on Sep 6, 1879, the Town Commissioners approved the reorganization, electing Dr. L.S. Bell as the fire chief.
