On November 2, 2021, Henry Ruggs III crashed his car in downtown Las Vegas, causing the death of 23-year old Tina Tintor and her dog and also causing the release of Ruggs from the Las Vegas Raiders.[1] After the crash, Ruggs and his girlfriend Kiara "Rudy" Kilgo-Washington were transported to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada (UMCSN) with non-life threatening injuries.[2]

It is reported that at the time of the accident, Ruggs was driving at 156 miles per hour and was more than two times over the blood alcohol legal limit of Nevada.[3]

Background[edit]

Hours before the incident, Ruggs was seen at a Topgolf location in Las Vegas. Ruggs and his girlfriend, Kiara Kilgo-Washington, were drinking mai tais, which is possibly the leading contributor in Ruggs' 0.16% blood alcohol content after the fatal car crash.[4] After partying for a few hours, Ruggs and Washington departed in his Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, with Ruggs as the driver and Washington as the passenger. Soon afterwards, at approximately 3:39 MT, he rammed into the trunk of a Toyota RAV4, the vehicle Tina Tintor and her dog were occupying, killing them. At the time, he was speeding at 156 mph and he was driving at 120 mph when the airbags released.[5][6]

Response[edit]

Nick Saban
Derek Carr
Nick Saban (left) and Derek Carr (right) both responded to the incident.

Many notable people reacted to the situation. Derek Carr, Ruggs' former teammate on the Raiders, showed compassion for Ruggs by saying Ruggs needs to be loved and that "if no one else will do it, I'll do it." The Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia also responded to the situation by stating "We want to express our sincere condolences to the victim's family".[7] Kadarius Toney of the New York Giants faced backlash for his insensitive comment about the accident. He stated through Twitter that "everybody makes mistakes".[8] Nick Saban, head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide college football team, stated "We're going to support [Henry Ruggs] through it, but we also have a lot of compassion for the victims, and our thoughts and prayers are also with them."[9]
