arc'tan'gent is the third studio album by British metal band, earthtone9, released on 25 September 2000 by Copro Records. It is the band's only album with bassist Jamie Floate. earthrone9 recorded the album at Philla Studios and Backstage ... was with producer Andy Sneap, whom the band credited with

, who was replaced by Dave Anderson after recording was completed.

arc'tan'gent received critical acclaim for its

. The band toured with the likes of Pitchshifter, Soulfly and Fear Factory After struggling with exhaustion and a lack of major label interest, the band split up in April 2002.

. arc'tan'gent

The album is the namesake of the ArcTanGent Festival, established in 2013; earthtone9 have played the album in its entirety at the inaugural edition of the festival in 2013.

Background and recording[edit]

The band wrote most of the album's tracks whilst on tour. "Tat Twam Asi" and "Alpha-Hi" were re-recorded from their Hi-Point EP (2000). Ishmael Lewis of Liberty37 features on PRD Chaos.

MUSIC STUFF HERE

Earthtone9 began pre-production and writing of their next album on tour.

In early 2000, bassist Graemae Watts left the band. The band held auditions for a replacement, wanted a "singing bassist". and he was temporarily replaced by Dave Anderson for the band's committed dates before Jamie Floate joined the band in April 2000.[1] Floate had not played bass prior to joining the band.[2]

Earthtone9 recorded arc'tan'gent with producer Andy Sneap in the summer of 2000, at .

The band had worked with Sneap on their first album Lo Definition (1998), and were fans of his former band Sabbat and engineering style.[3]jkloop0

Middleton said that he realised how "very lo-fi, very very quick, [and] very cheap" their previous two album's were.

"the first record that's fully realised what we always thought we were". (rock sound 2001)[4]

After recording was completed, the band reunited with Anderson. Packard said that whilst he could not sing, the band felt that they "gelled better" with him.[1]

In a 2001 interview, Middleton said that his lyrics "are just about life in general" and personal challenges, perceptions and interactions.[5] Terrorizer noted their fragmented and "decentered" nature, which it considered "a radical step from the self-obsession" of the contemporary nu metal scene.[5] "Tat Twam Asi" was influenced by The Way of Wyrd by Brian Bates, and is about "pushing moving for enlightenment".[6] "P.R.D Chaos" ("pattern recognition device chaos") is about how the adoption of roles in groups by individuals "can lead to assumption and not be healthy".[6] "Evil Crawling I" and ."Approx. Purified" both involve "dystopian commentary", with the former featuring David Bowie-inspired wordplay and the latter asking if "we [are] the purification or do we need to be burnt off the planet to take it back to where it was supposed to be".[6]

Middleton does not like to specify his lyrics because nu metal. aggro , the comtempary shit. idk i saying things

Release and promotion[edit]

Earthtone9 performing live in 2000

arc'tan'gent was released through Copro Records on 25 September 2000. Prior to its release, several release parties were arranged across the United Kingdom. The band filmed a music video for "Tat Twan Asi", directed by (NAME). It was first released as an enhanced video in Rock Sound's May 2001 covermount CD.[7] MTV airplay at all? It was later included on the Omega EP. in April 2002. In April 2002, the album, along with the rest of earthtone9's back catalogue, was released in North America by Abstract Sound Recordings.[8] A 20th anniversary remastered reissue of the album on double vinyl, released in October 2020,[9] sold out within hours of its announcement.[6]

Earthtone9 toured extensively in support of the album, playing 170 shows during the year 2000 alone.[4]

played at the Lost Weekender, cling film thing????????

The band toured Europe with Soulfly.

In early July 2001, the band recorded some demos for Island Records, and uploaded three new songs to their website.[10] Middleton said that although the label offered them a deal, the band did not think it was satisfactory.[11] This material was later released as the Omega EP in April 2002. In late July 2001, the band parted ways with drummer Si. Earthtone 9 Lose Drummer (also in this url)https://web.archive.org/web/20010808110825/http://www.totalrock.com/cgi-bin/newspro/viewnews.cgi?newsall

they hoped to get label interest, they did record three songs for ,

Middleton described the touring experience as "demoralizing", as the band were exhausted, leading to infighting and poor performances.[12]

Soon after the Soulfly tour, Earthtone9 decided to disband.[12] The band embarked on their final tour in April 2002. with their final performance taking place at The Garage in London on 13 April 2002.[12] Owen Packard said that whilst he was proud of arc'tan'gent and "still [had] a lot of positivity", he wished that the band had stopped earlier.

Broke up in 2002, partially because they got exhausted from the lack of support (couldnt find a major label to sign with.)

Critical reception[edit]

arc'tan'gent received critical acclaim. Awarding the album a perfect 10 score, Graham Reed of Drowned in Sound praised its diverse combination of influences and deemed it "Easily a contender for metal album of this (or any other) year, and nothing short of essential."

Rock Sound said "everything a classic rock album should be - full of schizophrenic twists and turns, bludgeoned riffolo, gallons of emotion - and then some."

The Encyclopedia of Popular Music (2006) called the album "a confident display" that showed the band "edging into ever more melodic terrirtory without sacrificing their dark metallic edge."

arc'tan'gent was ranked at number 16 on Metal Hammer's list of the "Top 20 Albums of 2000",(p. 61) and at number 24 on Terrorizer's "Writers Poll 2000".(p. 60) In 2005, readers of Kerrang! voted arc'tan'gent as the 79th greatest British rock album ever.[13] In 2010, Metal Hammer included the album in its list of the "300 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die!".[14]

The album is the namesake of the ArcTanGent Festival, which focuses on post-rock/metal and math rock acts.[15] Earthtone9 performed the album in its entirety at the inaugural edition of the festival in 2013,[16] and will perform at the 2024 edition on 17 August 2024.[17]
