This is a proposed naming conventions guideline for the naming of Wikipedia articles about athletes and people involved in the world of sport. This broad class of people may include, but is not limited to: coaches, umpires and referees, sports broadcasters and journalists and, of course, athletes.

General rules

The title of an article for an athlete (or other sports personality) should reflect the name they most commonly went by during their career. In the event that an athlete changed their name during their career, then the article title should reflect the name that is most recognizable. Example: Muhammad Ali, not Cassius Clay (a redirect)

Nicknames should only be used when an athlete went by their nickname professionally instead of their given name(s). Examples: Babe Ruth and Pelé
