A minicomputer is type of a computer with small size and simple features, developed in mid-1960s. Minicomputers located between mainframes and micro computers. It contains the components "processor, motherboard, ram, storage, network connection, image-audio transfer and power connection". It has smaller dimensions due to the difference in the architecture of the components[1]. The cenral processing unit (CPU) of the minicomputers includes integrated semiconductor chips that performs all of the aritmetics and logical processes. This processor connects to the server when processing compute-intensive tasks or high workloads.[2] It is also a multiprocessing system capable of supporting from 4 to about 200 users simultaneously. Minicomputers are more portable than others and The minicomputer size ranges between 7 to 12 inches in width or less than 7 inches. It is needs to a mouse, keyboard and monitor to use the minicomputer.Minicomputers can perform many of functions that a regular computer can. Therefore it can be used in almost every field. There are some advantages of the minicomputers. These advantages are listed below.

ADVANTAGES

  • Minicomputer consumes less energy compared to the normal computers.
  • It takes up less space and can be carried more easily.
  • It is cheaper than desktop computers.
  • It offers high performance with its hardware and software features.

History[edit]

Minicomputers were developed in the mid1960s.At that time, computers were the size of a room and there was a need to use small computers. In the 1950s, there were small machines that looked like minicomputers but these were not general purpose and were designed for a specific role. That's why it wasn't considered a minicomputer. The first minicomputer which was developed was known as Digital Equipment Corporation and it was made by using transistors and it costs from the US $16000. So; The PDP-8, developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in 1965, was the first commercially successful minicomputer.[3] PDP-8 became the most common minicomputer ever. In the 1970s, many companies like DEC, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM, started to production minicomputers. With the introduction of personal computers in the 1980s, minicomputers lost popularity.but nowadays minicomputers; It is used in industrial control structures, medical research centers and many other areas.
