Death of General Friedrich von Gagern in battle near Kandern

Friedrich Balduin Ludwig Freiherr von Gagern (* October 24, 1794 in Weilburg; † April 20, 1848 near Kandern) was a General of the German Confederation.

Gagern was the son of Hans Christopher Ernst von Gagern, a minister of Nassau.Two of his brothers were Heinrich von Gagern, the president of the Frankfurt Assembly, and the politician Maximilian von Gagern.

After studying law at the University of Göttingen, University of Marburg, and the University of Gießen he followed his father's intention that he become an army officer. He entered the Austrian service and fought in the Napoleonic Wars, during which he was wounded at the Battle of Quatre Bras.

Gagern served, with interruptions, in the Dutch armed services from 1815. In 1830 he became the Chief of the General Staff under Prince Bernhard von Weimar, and later governor of South Holland. From 1844 - 48 he served in the Dutch East Indies colonial service.

Am 14. April 1848 wurde er im Badischen Aufstand von den Kommissaren für Baden des Fünfzigerausschusses zum Stellvertreter des Kommandierenden Generals Maximilian von Baden (1796-1882) bestellt. Am 20. April traf er mit seinen badischen Truppen bei Kandern auf den Heckerzug. Bei Verhandlungen mit den Aufständischen eröffneten diese das Gefecht und von Gagern wurde das erste Opfer des für seine Truppen siegreichen Gefechts bei Kandern.

Er war Mitglied des Corps Hannovera Göttingen.
