Autopatrolled[edit]

User:Prince of Erebor[edit]

I have created 80 articles, primarily focused on Sinophone cinema and fantasy literature, with 2 currently undergoing GAN. All of my articles have been promptly reviewed, and none of them have been deleted or marked for maintenance. I am requesting autopatrolled rights to alleviate the workload of the patrollers, especially those who actively review film articles and have reviewed the majority of my articles, allowing them to allocate more time to address articles that truly require attention. As a side note, I am a veteran editor with patroller rights on Chinese Wikipedia, having authored over 200 articles, including a dozen featured and good articles. While I fully understand that there are differences in policies and MOS across different Wikipedias, I believe this demonstrates my credibility and knowledge in assessing article quality.— Prince of EreborThe Book of Mazarbul 13:18, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

User:Losipov[edit]

I'm applying for autopatrolled rights for a second time, with my first request being denied in April 2023. The reason for that decline was that my previous articles were tagged for "notability". Since then, I have worked on bringing articles over from the Russian Wikipedia and have had relatively few problems when other editors were reviewing them (I don't bring over everything from those respective pages, so I add a tag for expanding from Russian to let others know that information is still there). I feel like I have learned from what I was doing wrong, and in the process, I have made dozens more articles since the decline. Therefore, I respectfully request that I be granted the autopatrolled permission this time around. Thanks in advance for your consideration. Losipov (talk) 17:23, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

New page reviewer[edit]

User:Florificapis[edit]

I got busy in real life for most of March and April, so my request was put on hold per [1]. Here is my original reason for requesting NPR permissions again.

I have over 120 new articles under my belt, mostly relating to medieval history, monasteries, saints, and geographical features. I am familiar with the kinds of content that would fall under CSD criteria, since I have experience wikifying new pages and tagging obviously problematic new pages for speedy deletion. I know the guidelines on notability, proper sourcing, draftifying new articles, rating talk pages using scripts, AfC, AfD, and other essential patrolling tasks. Would be quite happy to reduce the backlog while being cautious and careful. Also currently a Pending Changes Reviewer. Florificapis (talk) 00:09, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

User:TarnishedPath[edit]

I participated in the December backlog drive, being granted a trial. At the end of the trial I requested permanent NPP, which was denied with the denying admin expressing concern that I hadn't created any articles. I've since created an article about Neeraj Gupta (refer to User_talk:TarnishedPath/Archive_2#Your_submission_at_Articles_for_creation:_Neeraj_Gupta_(sculptor)_has_been_accepted) and been responsible for the bulk of the material in the newly created article Bruce Lehrmann‎. I had been working on Draft:Bruce Lehrmann‎ but someone else started work on Bruce Lehrmann‎ just as I submitted Draft:Bruce Lehrmann‎ to AfC so I ended up merging my work over to the mainspace article and issuing a CSD for deletion of the draft. I've continued to be semi-regularly involved with AfD. I'm applying because I got a notification a while ago that there was a backlog drive for May and I'm willing to help out a bit with that. Hello. I was initially given a month long trial as a new page reviewer after receiving an invitation on my user page, and I've been enjoying everything so far: reviewing pages, providing feedback, sending WikiLove to new and returning users who have made exceptional first attempts, tagging issues, and resolving issues myself (that could otherwise be tagged) when I have time in an attempt to reduce the backlog. I have already been renewed once, and my second trial expires in a little over two weeks (May 26th). I'm requesting either an indefinite or longer-term ability to review new pages before my time lapses. Haven't had any behavioral issues, and I try to treat all users with respect. I will continue to help clear the backlog in the meantime. Thanks again. Trainsskyscrapers (talk) 00:06, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

Not done. First, I'll note that the prior conferral of this permission was provisional, intended as a trial run, which can be seen from the log statement--it was not removed, it simply expired. That having been said, on reviewing your track record, you approved articles with clearly-inadequate sourcing at Draft:Georgi Tasin (previously in mainspace) and Stanislav Přibyl, and did not tag or otherwise note some rather egregiously non-neutral language at Michael Dóczy and Signe Zeicate signed, Rosguill talk 14:41, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi! I was granted a one month trial with the NPP right and feel as though I did a decent job. I mainly focused on marking obviously acceptable articles. I didn't do a ton of reviewing, but I then again I felt like doing more than a handful a day would have been overstepping the constraints of a trial permission. If it is ok with the coordinating admins, I'd like to keep using the NPP right; feel welcome to simply renew the trial period for another month if you need more indication that I'll stick to procedure. ~ Pbritti (talk) 13:29, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

I was suggested to apply here, and I've decided to volunteer. To make this more consistent:
I'm an AFC reviewer and I mostly create articles and review articles relating to biographies, as well as biological or scientific topics. I have DYK, GA, and vast experience with AFD and other noticeboard discussions. I'd like to volunteer in new pages patrolling as well to help reduce the queue. (I most likely won't be reviewing pages daily, but whenever I do, I'd do a thorough review, and I'm very collaborative. I provide feedback and at times amend issues myself of the pages I review).
Note that I've had a name change, so certain stats tool pages might not work properly. And 3 out of 4 of my deleted pages were self delete.

Thanks.

Not much to brag about with new article creation, but there's a limited sample there I stand behind. I'm decently acquainted with the AfD scene, and have been working with new (often problematic) users and editors as best I can from RCP. I was a new page reviewer until earlier this month. As my curation log suggests, while this wasn't the focus of my wikiediting, I occasionally dipped into the backlog to review new articles, a fair few of which I draftified or sent to AfD (so they weren't all easy!). I think my reviews were adequately accurate to demonstrate my suitability for the permission, and I'd like to continue helping to reduce the backlog as my wikiediting time allows. Thanks! IgnatiusofLondon (he/him☎️) 20:19, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

Courtesy ping for @Red-tailed hawk, who first offered me trial permissions. IgnatiusofLondon (he/him☎️) 20:21, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
@IgnatiusofLondon: I'm afraid your draftify log raises several questions:
  1. User:Russellmorden/Economics of Gold was technically outside of WP:NPPHOUR, but from the edit summary and placeholder sections it should have been pretty clear that the creator was still working on it (see WP:DONTDRAFTIFY#5). Wouldn't an {{unsourced}} tag have been sufficient?
  2. Draft:Belarus–Maldives relations has 21 inline citations for less than 50 characters of prose and two tables, yet you draftified it as "needing more sources". On the creator's talk page you specified that what was missing sources discussing and explaining the international relations between Belarus and the Maldives, not simply side-by-side fact profiles about the countries' basic information. What is the policy basis for excluding an article lacking such sources from mainspace?
  3. Draft:Battle of Orurillo was also draftified for lacking sources. Why was the {{unreferenced}} tag, already added by another reviewer, not sufficient? Did you note that there is a Spanish article on the same battle that does cite sources?
  4. Also on Draft:Battle of Orurillo, this is a clear attempt to revert your draftification. Why did you move it back to draftspace, instead of mainspace?
  5. Did you not notice that Draft:Recapture of Fort Vaux had previously been moved to mainspace by the creator, and was thus ineligible for draftification per WP:DONTDRAFTIFY#6?
  6. Draft:Recapture of Fort Vaux is a lengthy article, apparently translated or adapted from fr:Reprise du fort de Vaux, with 121 inline citations. The reasons you gave for draftifying it include an essay-like tone, overuse of primary sources, and possibility of a merge. Why could these issues not be addressed in mainspace?
I do appreciate that you took the time to leave specific feedback for the creators of each of these articles, rather than only relying on the script's canned reasons, but I'm worried that you are applying a significantly higher standard to new articles in mainspace than the community expects from new page patrol, and would appreciate it if you could reflect on your approach before any extension of the NPR right. – Joe (talk) 14:18, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

A third trial would be appreciated. Part of the problem is that I apply for the permission, wait X days for it to be approved, don't notice it's approved as I'm busy doing other things. Hey, I have done much AfC reviewing, reviewed over 430 articles, and participated in many AfDs with deep discussions to demonstrate my understanding of Wikipedia's guidelines. I was advised to gain more experience with the deletion process, and I believe I have done so. My previous PERM was declined, saying that my AfDs were SNOWING, which I have since addressed. I think I am ready to review new articles. There is a very big backlog, and I want to help reduce it. GrabUp - Talk 13:24, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Not done. You have been told by two administrators to wait a couple months before requesting this permission. Please listen to their advice. —Ingenuity (t • c) 13:48, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
@Ingenuity I asked them there Whatever, you said, “Just develop a meaningful track record.” Does that mean I don’t have a good track record now? Are my AfD participations still WP:SNOW, or have I engaged in deeper discussions to show my knowledge? I want to know where my main problem is!, But they didn't replied which is the reason my PERM here, I want to ask you the question. Can you answer please? GrabUp - Talk 13:50, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
Yesterday, after you sought feedback, Extraordinary Writ told you to wait. You later reached out to The Night Watch who also did so. Your efforts are appreciated, but when people tell you to slow down and keep working at it, you should do so instead of ignoring the advice given to you. You've mentioned tagging articles, but I think you're missing a lot when you try to do so, so perhaps get more familiar with the possible maintenance tags that can be added. Also, I dislike that you're accepting your own AFC submissions a minute after creating and submitting the articles (Rajpalsinh Mahendrasinh Jadav, Hemant Joshi (politician), Anita Subhadarshini), it unnecessarily inflates your stats. If you plan on immediately "accepting" your own submission then just create it in main space. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:56, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
I tried to reply to this without reloading the page and saw that Ingenuity had already done so. Leaving my comment but removing the not done template, since Ingenuity has that covered. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:59, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
@Hey man im josh: I saw an admin doing it, which is why I do it too. However, these articles were only created today or yesterday. GrabUp - Talk 13:58, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
@Hey man im josh: Can you respond to what I said above? If I had been given an answer to my question there, I would not have come here. GrabUp - Talk 14:09, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
  • Extraordinary Writ, also said in his feedback It's up to you when you want to make the PERM request; the reviewing admin (who won't be me) will decide at that point whether you have enough experience. and you are all declining the request just because they said 'moving very quickly'? I came here to PERM because I was not answered when I questioned them on the Talk page and here again about the specific problem behind the decline. GrabUp - Talk 14:44, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
@Hey man im josh, @Ingenuity: Why aren’t you responding? Please answer my question that brought me here. GrabUp - Talk 16:32, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

User:Flemmish Nietzsche[edit]

I've been going through the new pages feed for a while now without the right, to clean up new pages and nominate for CSD those pages that fall under the criteria, (at least 50 by now, weird how the log is a red link) and I've also participated in AfD and other deletion venues as well. The reviewer right should help when going through the new pages feed as I have been doing to better help misguided editors and to more efficiently go through new articles, and of course reduce the almost 10000-tall backlog that still wasn't gotten rid of in the May backlog drive. I've been an editor for 7+ years with 20K+ edits on Wikipedia, 78K+ edits on Wikidata, and over 8.5k edits on Wikimedia. In past month, I have tagged many files for move and figured I would rather ask for the filemover priviledges instead of duplicating work for other users. I've never been a disruptive editor. Please consider my request. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kiran891 (talkcontribs) 2024-06-04T02:05:21 (UTC)

@User:Kiran891 there is File namespace on English Wikipedia, but to request moving you'd need to ask at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/File mover. On other hand, for Wikimedia Commons see Commons:Requests_for_rights#Filemover ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 22:21, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

Had the perm before, but it inactivity-lapsed a fair while ago and I held off on re-requesting upon my return because I had no need for it at the time. Would appreciate having it again so I can do WP:SWAP-style moves related to taxon articles (typically, either to bring articles in line with WP:MONOTYPICFAUNA and to fix taxon articles where the correct scientific name redirects to an invalid scientific name, but the redirect has post-creation edits.) Hi! I guess I would require this for doing certain edits with respect to certain templates, particularly with respect to Indian territories and transport. I have been making edits to templates within the ambit possible, but there are a couple of protected templates which would need additions (E.g. rint updation). So, it will be useful to have this. I want to have to be in the template editor group because i've already read the info page about Template editors, and also i've saw some mistakes and errors in templates that are restricted to the group i'm requesting.  Not done. You do not meet the minimum criteria for this permission. You can make edits to template-protected pages by making your edit on that template's sandbox subpage, then using {{TPER}} on the talk page to request that a template editor implement it. –Novem Linguae (talk) 18:35, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Pennsylvania and weird message[edit]

Hey everyone, I'm not sure where to ask but this feels like the best place to do so. A work colleague has just brought up to my attention the page Pennsylvania, where if you are logged out, a big message saying "User:CheezDeez ON TOP" appears. That particular user has been indefinitely blocked for sockpuppeting. I am unable to find anything like this in the source code and it only happens if you're logged out, so I presume this comes from some HTML/JS running somewhere and putting that there. It's the most bizarre thing I've ever seen on any Wikiproject and I'm not sure how to proceed, but I think you guys might have the best options on solving this. Thank you for taking a look and @ me if you need anything or if you solve this issue. I'm curious where it's coming from. KormiSK (talk) 18:03, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

This is cached template vandalism. See WP:VPT#Strange bug on Flag of Russia article. A null edit should sort it. Izno (talk) 18:11, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
I've purged the page cache at that location, and I don't see any issues when viewing it. KormiSK, if you're still seeing that content, you likely need to clear your browser cache. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:15, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

Using console.log instead of comments to blank user scripts[edit]

Example of a user script that a consensus at IANB caused to be blanked: User:Technical 13/Scripts/OneClickArchiver.js

Would it make more sense to console.log the blanking message rather than adding a comment? Would give the end user more of a hint as to what happened and what needs to be upgraded. –Novem Linguae (talk) 17:07, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

I guess so, but given that anyone who knows enough to look at the javascript console will presumably know to also look at the script source to see what's going on, this feels like it'd be more trouble than it's worth. Since it's not really much of a use case, I think I'd personally prefer to keep using comments instead, for simplicity's sake. Writ Keeper  17:24, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Changing // to console.log seems fairly simple to me. Having a non-silent error seems better than a silent one to me. –Novem Linguae (talk) 17:33, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
"Simple" from the perspective of not making an editor's browser do more than it needs to, even if it's just a logging statement. If it's not going to actually help anyone, why do it? Writ Keeper  17:47, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
I see giving users a hint as to why their user script broke as superior to failing silently. No worries if you disagree though. –Novem Linguae (talk) 18:01, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
If we had some extremely popular script, it could be part of the deprecation process, but agree with WK - the number of people that even know how to open their jslog is exceptionally low. — xaosflux Talk 18:25, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
I agree with Novem Linquae - it will help some small subset of the population and hurt nobody so there's no reason not to do it. But this is a bridge best crossed when it happens, as Technical 13's script has been blanked long enough that everyone who needs to know has known already. * Pppery * it has begun... 18:33, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
What about mw.notify? Obviously it'd be fairly intrusive to have it on every page. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:04, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, def a no-go, and not worth doing shenanigans like 1/1k or 1/10k chance. ~ Amory (utc) 22:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
I think the point being made there is that for the overwhelming majority of users, checking the JS console in their browser is not the first port of call; a comment on the page itself is probably much more of a hint since most folks are far more likely/able to do do so. Putting a message in a console log is, for most, more akin to "failing silently" than a comment.
At any rate, clearly the answer is both. ~ Amory (utc) 22:50, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
I am almost always going to check the devtools js console before i go reading program code. But there's no support for my idea so i withdraw it. No worries. –Novem Linguae (talk) 23:46, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
I'm not going to stop someone adding console.log if they're the ones who are blanking a script, but I also don't want to be required to do so myself. Izno (talk) 00:04, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Template gadgets[edit]

Template gadgets - naming convention[edit]

Hi all, we've got the first request coming in to do a mw:Template gadgets. They are called that, but what these actually are is:

  • A javascript gadget
    • That is a default gadget
    • Normally hidden
    • That has a trigger such that it only runs when a page is in a certain category
      • The "templates" would likely implement that

We certainly need to be take due care in adding any such gadget definition, as basically any editor can cause other editors to run the gadget by placing a page in a category and getting someone else to visit the page. (Like all sitescripts, only intadmins can actually change the script). We already have a standard-ish process for having gadget requests made and processed. I think we should have a standard naming convention for these categories, perhaps Category:Wikipedia pages using gadget %NAME%. Any suggestions as to this? I think it should prob be a hidden category and we should have a master category for these as well (Category:Wikipedia gadget gategory triggers or something?). Feedback welcome below. — xaosflux Talk 11:51, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

Context: MediaWiki:Gadget-Vivarium.jsNovem Linguae (talk) 13:19, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
All of what you proposed looks good to me. * Pppery * it has begun... 19:49, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
I'd name the category Category:Pages using gadget %NAME%. There's only two categories using "Wikipedia pages using ...", and way more just "Pages using ...". --rchard2scout (talk) 20:33, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Makes sense. * Pppery * it has begun... 20:35, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

Template gadgets - gadget settings[edit]

  • I've launched the first template gadget (Vivarium), it should be running at Template:Conway's Game of Life gadget. This is a "default gadget", but only runs on pages in the gadget category. The upstream suggestion is to make these hidden, but I'm not sure about that. Any harm in allowing logged in users to opt-out? — xaosflux Talk 15:16, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
