The Oakland Zachary's Pizza.

Zachary's Pizza is a Chicago-style pizzeria in California's East Bay.

Zachary's offers both thin-crust and deep-dish style pizzas, but it is their deep-dish variety that earned them their fame in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their deep-dish pizzas, although inspired by the pies invented in Chicago in the 1940s, are distinctly influenced by California cuisine.

History[edit]

Zach Zachowski and Barbara Gabel open the first Zachary's in Oakland in 1983.

Employee Owned[edit]

In 2003, Zachowski and Gabel decided to retire. Instead of selling the business, the owners decided to create an Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP).[1] As of 2010, employees own 100% of Zachary's stock.

Art Contest[edit]

Since the mid-1980s, Zachary's has held a pizza-themed art contest every two years or so. Winning drawings are framed and displayed on the walls at each Zachary's location. The drawings are done on an equal-sized (roughly 3' by 5') piece of white paper and are usually done with marker, crayon, or watercolor.
