Storm names[edit]

The following names were used for named storms that formed in the Southern Ocean during 1998. Names that were not assigned this season are marked in gray. The names not retired was used again in the 2002 season. This is the List I for the new lists and then, almost all names used for the first time, except for Elsie, which used in 1981, 1985, 1989, 1993 and 1997, Forrest, which used in 1981 and two others.

Retirement[edit]

In the spring 1999, the names Brian and Koryn were retired, due to their high damage and death toll. Their replacement names for the 2002 season was Bruce and Kirk.
