Thug Life is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote the script with Kamal Haasan. It is jointly produced by Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras Talkies and Red Giant Movies. The film stars Haasan, leading an ensemble cast that includes Silambarasan, Trisha, Abhirami, Nassar, Joju George, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sanya Malhotra, Ashok Selvan, Ali Fazal and Pankaj Tripathi. It signifies the reunion of Haasan and Ratnam, reuniting them after their cult film Nayakan (1987).

The film was officially announced in November 2022 under the tentative title Kamal Haasan 234, as it is Haasan's 234th film as a lead actor, and the official title was revealed a year later. Principal photography commenced in January 2024 in Chennai along with a sporadic schedule in New Delhi, which was again followed by another schedule held at the former location. The film has music composed by A. R. Rahman, cinematography handled by Ravi K. Chandran and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad.

Thug Life is scheduled to release in 2024 in theatres.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

Thug Life is the second collaboration of Kamal Haasan with Mani Ratnam after Nayakan (1987).

In late 2002, Kamal Haasan unveiled plans for a film project titled Moo, which he intended to co-direct alongside filmmakers Mani Ratnam and Singeetam Srinivasa Rao. The screenplay was to explore the intricacies of the Rashomon effect, presenting audiences with three distinct interpretations of a single incident. However, Ratnam opted out of the project, citing his commitments to Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004), which used a similar narrative device. Undeterred by Ratnam's departure, Haasan proceeded with the concept, resulting in the creation of Virumaandi (2004). This film, centred on the interrogation of two prison inmates, retained the thematic essence of Moo.[13] Following a decade, in late 2012, Hollywood producer Barrie Osborne had approached to make Moo into an English film. The actor announced the project in February 2013, but it was later shelved.[14][15]

Following their collaboration for Ponniyin Selvan: I in 2022, Haasan officially announced on 6 November that he would collaborate with Ratnam again for the latter's directorial venture after the Ponniyin Selvan film series.[16][17] The project would be funded by Haasan, Ratnam and Udhayanidhi Stalin's Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras Talkies and Red Giant Movies.[18][19] Tentatively titled Kamal Haasan 234, shortened as KH 234, it marks the reunion of Haasan and Ratnam after 35 years since the release of their cult classic film Nayakan (1987).[20] The film's official title, Thug Life, was announced on 6 November 2023, the eve of Haasan's birthday.[21][22]

Pre-production[edit]

Commenting on why it took long time to collaborate, Ratnam stated that he did not have a suitable script for Haasan and continued to try for years until they found a suitable one.[22][23] Ratnam co-wrote the film's script along with Haasan,[24] and B. Jeyamohan, whom soon after opted out due to reasons unknown. For the writing and the pre-production process, it took almost a year from late 2022 to late 2023.[25] A muhurat puja was held on 27 October 2023 at the headquarters of Raaj Kamal Films International in Chennai.[26] The team began shooting for the promotional teaser, which released on Haasan's birthday, by then and completed filming within three days.[27][28]

In mid-October 2023, Ravi K. Chandran was announced as the cinematographer, in his fourth collaboration with Ratnam after Kannathil Muthamittal (2002), Aayutha Ezhuthu and Yuva (2004) and second with Haasan after the unreleased film Marudhanayagam.[27] A. R. Rahman would score the music, in his eighteenth consecutive film with the director.[29] Ratnam further retained his norm technicians including editor A. Sreekar Prasad, stunt choreography duo Anbariv and publicity designer Gopi Prasannaa. Amritha Ram would style Haasan along with his regular costume designers Eka Lakhani and Ambady Ranjith.[30][31] Chintu Mohapatra and S. Barani were appointed as the executive producer by the production house.[32]

Casting[edit]

Silambarasan was cast in an important role, in his second film under Mani Ratnam's direction after Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018). Trisha was also cast in an important role.

Haasan would sport several looks, with one of them resembling the short hairstyle from Sathyaa (1988).[33][34] Silambarasan was cast in an important role,[35] in his second collaboration with Haasan as the veteran actor is funding the actor's 48th film, and second with Ratnam after Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018).[36][37] Trisha was also cast in an important role, in her third respective collaboration with Haasan and Ratnam after Manmadan Ambu (2010), Thoongaa Vanam (2015), Aayutha Ezhuthu and the Ponniyin Selvan film series.[38][39] Abhirami also joined the film in an important role,[40] whilst Nassar was also cast in an important role.[41] She stated that she would paired opposite Haasan, reuniting and pairing with the latter again after Virumaandi.[42]

Jayam Ravi,[43] Dulquer Salmaan,[44] Gautham Karthik,[45] Joju George,[46] and Aishwarya Lekshmi would play prominent roles.[47] Salmaan and Ravi's inclusion were announced on 6 November 2023 by the production house, while Karthik, George and Lekshmi were in late-January 2024.[48][49][50] Sanya Malhotra was confirmed to be a part of the cast in late-May. She would also make her Tamil debut with the film.[51] Salmaan, however, was reported to have opted out in March, due to scheduling conflicts,[52] which was followed by reports of Ravi opting out too, for the same reason.[53] The actors, in addition to Karthik's, departure were confirmed in May when their names were omitted from an update by Raaj Kamal Films International on X (formerly Twitter). Silambarasan was brought onboard to replace Salmaan,[54] while Ashok Selvan was confirmed to have been brought onboard to replace Ravi.[55][56] Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi and Vaiyapuri were present at the film's preliminary shooting, confirming their presence.[57][58]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography began with the first schedule on 24 January 2024 in Chennai.[59] A few days later, director Sudha Kongara, along with Bejoy Nambiar, visited the sets and posted stills on X.[60][61] Ratnam began location hunts for the second schedule in early February at European countries, including Serbia.[62] Trisha revealed through her Instagram account on 21 February that she had joined the sets.[63] Initially, for the third schedule, the makers would travel to Siberia;[64] however, due to Haasan's political commitments and not being able to allot days, the schedule was postponed from starting.[65][66] The second schedule begun in late April at New Delhi.[67] A picture featuring Haasan, Vaiyapuri and Silambarasan was leaked to social media on 6 May,[68] forcing the makers to release an official look at Silambarasan two days later.[69]

During this schedule, the makers filmed at Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple. Sanya Malhotra was confirmed to have shot some scenes there.[70] The third schedule begun in late-May at Chennai.[71] A sequence featuring Silambarasan and Trisha and a song sequence featuring the former and Haasan was reported to have been filmed.[72][73] A three-day schedule featuring an action sequence was filmed at Pondicherry Airport in early June.[74] On 5 June, Silambarasan had served food at the sets of the filming, reportedly to celebrate the winning of a party at the Lok Sabha Election.[75]

Controversy[edit]

Shortly after Silambarasan's participation in the film was confirmed, producer Ishari K. Ganesh sent a notice to the makers demanding his removal, allegingas there was an active "red card" issued by the Tamil Film Producers Council to the actor, prohibiting him from accepting new projects.[82] However, Silambarasan denied having received a red card.[83]
