Inclusion of frequently edited to-do list in mass-included template

See here for a comment on some issues pertaining to how this template's being used. Alai 04:22, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Editor-friendly

I would like to edit this to make it look less a block of text, and more a very short summary/directory of resources avaible to interested editors. --Chris Griswold 18:34, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Propose your edit here in final form. The template is transcluded across so many articles it should be edited rarely, and not tweaked to get it looking right. Hiding Talk 19:12, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Balloon image

Perhaps it's just me, but it appears that the image overlaps the text (and does so on every talk page that this is on). Can someone fix it (since it's protected)? - jc37 22:28, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

I was just about to say that, I'll post a {{helpme}} tag here and see if that works. Cbrown1023 00:00, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
It appears to be due to Internet Explorer's buggy handling of floated elements. I've fixed it, it works for me in Firefox and Internet Explorer. Cheers, Tangotango 08:23, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Portal

We may want to get rid of the portal image; that might reduce the size quite a bit. --Chris Griswold () 17:26, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Yeah. There's a trick other banners for in hiding stuff, that it's been suggested is implemented, see {{ME-project}}. I'm also thinking of amending the line "This article has not yet received a rating on the Project's quality scale. If you are a member of the project, please rate the article and then leave comments here to explain the ratings and/or to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the article." to "This article has not yet received a rating on the Project's quality scale. Project members should rate the article, leaving comments here explaining the rating." I'm also thinking of adding a future tag that will place articles in Category:Discussion of future comics. So I'm thinking get it all done in one hit, given there's concerns about the number of articles this is transcluded across and the strain on the servers editing it causes. Any thoughts? • Right, I think I have it sorted but it'll take a while for the servers to propagate the changes across the articles, so I can't see it yet. It works in a mock up in my user space, put it that way. Hiding Talk 21:06, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Blemish

It seems an unintentional quote mark (or 2 apostrophes) snuck in above the frame on that last edit, which surely can't have been intentional. Looks bad at any rate. MURGH disc. 13:45, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

I see that. I think it was introduced when he tried to combine the code for the "hide" and "nested" functionality. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 13:57, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Change

Can, in the nested template, the importance be shown instead of the class. When you look at e.g. Talk:Halo Graphic Novel, you see four times that it is a GA, which is quite redundant. It would be more informative if we knew at a glance that it was of mid importance to the comicsproject, in my opinion. Fram 10:03, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Since no response is coming, I'll try this myself, to see if I can show both or else only the importance. Fram 11:19, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Work group functionality

Functionality has been added to support the new comics work groups, but there may be bugs I haven't as yet anticipated. A few category names have changed, but that is intentional, it brings them into line with convention. Other than that, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Hiding Talk 14:29, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

I think the layout changes that come with the new functionality look good, but I think I spotted a leftover:
  • Under the expanded Editing guidelines, the line says Please remember these guidelines when editing a film article: and
  • Create an Infobox that tells all pertinent information about the film.
I was also wondering if maybe there was an oportunity to squeeze in a small Comics portal link icon, like many other project banners do. Perhaps on the upper right in opposite symmetry to the speech balloon..? MURGH disc. 19:06, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
I'll sort that asap. Hiding Talk 16:50, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Jc already beat me to it. Hiding Talk 15:24, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Nice work, but isn't the banner rather huge now? The bottom two lines (editing guidelines and certainly the additional info) will probably be very rarely used, but take up a lot of screen space. Similarly, I fail to see why the previous single line with class and importance wasn't sufficient (and IMO nicer). I notice that the template is virtually the same as that of the Film project, but then again, that one has the same problems. I think that a three or four line banner should be the max, otherwise they really start to become obnoxious when there are a few of them. Fram 15:21, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Well, it was easier to edit the film one to achieve the functionality than add it to our old version, and also that seems to be the standard look for them. The single line should still work when the tag nested=yes is added, for example when inside {{WikiProjectBannerShell}}, if I'm reading you right. A number of people seemed to indicate they liked the look of the film banner, so I didn't really see any issue with copying it. Hiding Talk 16:50, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Oh yes, the nested function works well, and the rest is just my opinion, not anything that 'has' to be changed. It doesn't bother me that much, just wanted to raise it here to see what other people felt. Fram 19:49, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Well, I'll mock up a version based on the old styling in a sandbox and maybe we can see which one polls best, even though polls are evil. I'm not 100% behind this one myself. Hiding Talk 15:24, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Ugh. I can't seem to work out how to mock up a version based on the old one right now. I could comment out the editing guidance if that would help? Hiding Talk 16:43, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Template change reactions

Well, if we're gathering our reactions now I'll voice in. I quite liked the "previous new" look, and think the same slimming done by omitting the "Editing Guidelines" line would have worked nicely for that one too. But by all means, this old-new is fine. What I mean is that before, when you looked at Category:Top-importance Comics articles, most where ordered by the article name, not under the T of Talk. Now, more and more articles are listed under the T, which makes it harder to swiftly look through them. I think (but have no evidence) it has to do withj the workgroup template addition. Parameter problems

Some of the parameters are not working the way that they used to. I didn't notice any mention of this here on the talk page, so I'm assuming that this is not by design. Specifically, the parameters "fiction", "image", and "cleanup" used to each add an extra line to the template explaining what could be done to improve the article. As near as I can tell, these don't work currently. The fiction parameter might not be that important; I prefer using the {{in-universe}} template in articlespace as I think it gets more people's attention. However, I think that the cleanup and image parameters serve (or, at least, should serve) an important function. Is this problem local to me or are others experiencing it as well? --GentlemanGhost 21:44, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

B Class checklist

{{editprotected}}

There's an error in the template that it is looking for B-Class criteria confirmation when it is rated GA status. At least, I presume that's an error.

I haven't quite worked out all the details for this part of the template yet but think the fault lies with the switch at the beginning of the b-class checklist section.

{{!}}- <!--B-Class checklist--> {{#switch:{{Comics/Class|{{{class|}}}}}|FA|A|NA|Disambig|Redirect|Category|Future|List|Image|Portal|Needed|Current|FL|Template=|#default=

should have an extra switch for GA added, so

{{!}}- <!--B-Class checklist--> {{#switch:{{Comics/Class|{{{class|}}}}}|FA|GA|A|NA|Disambig|Redirect|Category|Future|List|Image|Portal|Needed|Current|FL|Template=|#default=

Hope I'm right on this. You can check the end result at Talk:Thrud the Barbarian which is GA rated. GDallimore (Talk) 14:13, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm going to now make the same request over on Template talk:Film should anyone be interested in following this and commenting where necessary... :) GDallimore (Talk) 09:12, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
That's not really an error. The GA class and the B-Class are from different scales. GA articles aren't automatically assumed to have met the B-Class criteria. Hiding T 10:10, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
I would say that if an article fails to make B-Class it should never be rated GA. The list of things to check in the article is pretty much a subset of Wikipedia:Good article criteria and looks to be a way of improving B-Class articles to GA or A quality, not a list of requirements necessary to meet B-Class. In any event, if there wasn't an error in the template, there was an error in the documentation which says that the B-Class checklist is "available only for articles rated as "Stub-Class", "Start-Class", or "B-Class"". GDallimore (Talk) 15:27, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
It's still not an error because they are somewhat seperate scales. Having written the template and understanding the concepts we are discussing here, I know what I'm talking about. It's incorrect to call it an error. You don't agree with the way it was, and that's fine. But it isn't an error. Hiding T 03:37, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Making it work more closely with work groups

I was adding a to do list to the World comics work group and put in "more" links on to a more detailed list, so the priorities are on the main page but people can link through to all that is needed. This got me thinking about integrating this template with the work groups.

So for example an article tagged with a cleanup/image tag could be put into a category like "World comics work group articles needing cleanup" or "World comics work group needing an image" and these could then be linked in from the todo list via a simple more link. So by updating the infobox you are automatically populating the category which acts as a list of all the things needing work within that work group (if anyone spots something important there they can just add it to the main todo list so it is flagged as a priority.

You could even push it further - an article in the Creators work group and the World work group that needs an infobox would go in a "World comics work group creators articles needing an infobox" which would be useful as you could run through such a category and bang in the comics creators infobox - I know I'd find something like that useful.

It would not only help get a bit of life back in the work groups by having categories automatically filled which visitors can see but it'd help with addition of infoboxes (we now need a lot) as well as make people aware of the importance of keeping the headers updated and make people more aware the various options available to them.

With that in mind would it be an idea to include a "request" option? Add {{comicsproj|request=yes|World-workgroup=yes}} would automatically populate a request category, which is a much more usable approach than finding the huge arts request list and the comics subsection. If this was all generated through this template and we made sure it was linked through from prominent places it could be a real boon to the project. (Emperor (talk) 14:15, 22 June 2008 (UTC))

  • We used to have a needed tag, which was for the same sort of reason you want a request tag, but they were frowned upon because they go on talk pages of articles which don't exist, and admins actively hunt and delete those under speedy criteria, regardless of their actual utility to other users. That would need to be changed before your idea would come to much, to be honest. The rest of it I did say I would do, so really, I guess I should. I need to remind myself how it is done. I'll try and implement it shortly. Hiding T 10:24, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Wait, I've already done this. See Category:Comics cleanup issues by workgroup and Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of comics, the subcats are under W there. • Should be okay. For something like this there are three pages you need to amend, this one, Template:Comics/Class which sets up the categories for this page, and Template:Comics/Classhack‎, a hack because of issues with the category class which makes the little C in the yellow box link to the category. Sort

I was looking at Category:C-Class Comics articles and noticed that it is sorting people by their first name. I am unsure if it is possible but as the biography header has a listas field is there anything we can do with that? I had assumed it somehow created an automatic defaultsort but I suppose it just hardcodes it. I suspect this isn't possible for technical reasons but thought I'd throw the idea in as we are (or should be) adding such data into the headers. (Emperor (talk) 13:52, 5 August 2008 (UTC))

Link to the bande dessinée portal

Given that there is a Portal:Bande dessinée page, I think it would be a good idea to include a link to this portal (as well as with the comics portal) in the talk pages of the articles related to the subject. The portal has a related work group WikiProject Comics/European comics work group, which is part of the WikiProject Comics. I suggest that the link to the BD portal appears when the article is within the scope of this European comics work group. In the banner, when one adds Euro=yes, there is already a link to the work group that appears, so it would be useful that a link to the portal appears at the same time. If it is possible to modify the banner, thanks. And if possible, with the image FrancoBelgianballoon.svg (question of aesthetics). Pah777 (talk) 16:13, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't believe the scope of the workgroup and the portal are equivalent, which would mean adding the portal to a lot of unrelated articles (Max and MLoritz, Polish comics, ...). Fram (talk) 08:25, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Polish and Hungarian comics can be considered as part of the Bande dessinée genre. Indeed, the term "bande dessinée" is much larger than "Franco-Belgian comics" and can concern all comics made in Europe - except the UK. There is no major contradiction with the definition of BD nor Franco-Belgian comics. It is even specified in List of Franco-Belgian comic series that "comics which are not created in French but in Dutch are sometimes included and sometimes excluded from the Franco-Belgian comics" (a sentence you are very likely to have written, Fram). It is olso specified on the portal that "the term bande dessinée is broad, and can be applied to (...) all comics in the styles of Belgian magazines, possibly expanded to include later French magazines"
The only receivable argument would be technical difficulties.Pah777 (talk) 20:15, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
I'll let other people comment further, but the actual portal contradicts you: the portal is only about French language and Dutch language comics, and focuses on comics related to publishers Dupuis, Dargaud, Le Lombard, Casterman and Standaard. I have no problem with this, but it cannot be equated to European comics, just like a portal focusing solely on Japanese manga should not be equated with Asian comics, even though there as well it is the most important faction of it. Perhaps it is best if you raise this on the comics project talk page, where more people will probably see this discussion than here. Fram (talk) 07:38, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
There is no contradiction. I is possible that the topic is not sufficiently covered by the portal, because there is no mention of all European comics. But a portal must not provide comprehensive information (there are articles for that), and most of the articles related to the BD genre deal with comics of Belgian and French articles. The articles mentionned are the most important (I remind you this is the role of a portal). That is to say the comics series, artists, writers, publishers which are mentionned on the portal are those which are the most influent and which are the most representative of the Bande dessinée genre.
If you think the portal is unperfect (because you which a comics series appear for exemple, or a writer or drawer), feel free to edit it: the portal does need improvement. But you cannot refuse to link a portal to its corresponding project banner on the grounds that it is unperfect and does not adequately covers the subject, this is illogical (as if you refused to wikify an article because it is not a good article). Pah777 (talk) 01:26, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
I don't refuse to link it "because it is imperfect and does not adequately cover the subject", I would personally not link it because it covers a different though partially overlapping subject. BD does not equal European comics, European comics are a much larger topic, ranging from Moomin to Fumetti. And I'm not interested in editing the BD portal, since I find it more useful to spend some of my time on the general comics portal: I believe that the BD portal does not have enough interested editors (and probably readers) to be viable, but that's just my opinion. Fram (talk) 14:58, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
I insist that the Bande dessinée genre is broader than European comics.
And you contradict yourself, refusing to edit the portal associated to the work group you belong to. It is illogical to edit articles while refusing to edit the corresponding portal. Why do you think the comics portal is more useful than the BD one ? They have the same purpose: to facilitate the access to articles linked to a topic. Obviously, the BD portal is a much better means to access to articles related to European comics than the comics portal.
It is not surprising if there are few editors and readers for the BD portal. You have unjustifiedly rejected the use of a link to this portal in the related articles, and now you refuse the link in the project banner. You are right, we won't succeeded in convincing each other. I will submit the case to the comic project (even if few people seem to be interested in European comics there) one day (in some months I think, I will be busy). Mid-importance / Bold writing

Resolved

I recently tried to assess Delcourt_(publisher) to mid-importance, but it appears that the rating isn't in bold writing on the template. Is that correct? I'm using Google Chrome.
By the way, there are many articles not assessed yet, but maybe the assessment should be discussed first? (Anyway, if there are disagreements, it could always be changed later.) 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 09:44, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

  • The importance should now be bold. There is a lot of articles which need assessing, please feel free to help out. As you say, any disagreements can be sorted out through discussion. Hiding T 09:55, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the fix, maybe the "Stub-Class" should have the italics removed, as well, in analogy with the other templates. 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 10:01, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Workgroup or work group?

I see J Greb has just changed some instances of "workgroup" to "work group". I'm not sure why but most of the groups use the variant with the space for the main category, but without the space for the assessment and cleanup categories. Compare:

Template:ComicsprojTemplate:WikiProject Comics — To standardize. –xenotalk 22:55, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

  • Comment Has WikiProject Comics been informed? 70.29.210.155 (talk) 04:59, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
Now they have. Thanks, –xenotalk 13:03, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
  • Dubious. Advantage 1 (ease of use) is invalid, as all our articles can be tagged with the suggested target as well, and will work just as well (which also applies to e.g. WPBiography, WPBelgium, etcetera). The second advantage (future use of template) is highly unlikely for Comicsproj or the WP tags as well (I agree that for single word templates like Aids or Chemistry, this may be an advantage). The third advantage may be a good enough reason, but I'm rather wary of this. Bots shouldn't in general tag large amounts of articles anyway, as the error rate is usally too high (I remember the amount of Belgian articles incorrectly tagged with Wikiproject France by a bot). Fram (talk) 07:13, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
Bots also benefit from standard banner forms if they are trying to add a shell to the page. –xenotalk 12:25, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
  • So the renaming is to make it easier for your bot? While making it a more trickier name for people to remember? I don't see the cost/benefit working out there. For something like {{Film}} I could see a point but even there it makes it very easy to remember which makes it much more likely people will add it. It doesn't seem broken so I don't really see the point. (Emperor (talk) 14:16, 26 May 2010 (UTC))
  • It makes it easier for every bot doing maintenance on the top business, not just my bot. Consistency is also desirable. "Comicsproj" would of course, remain as a redirect. –xenotalk 14:19, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
  • For how long though? IIUC, the "'bot friendly" markup is only 'bot friendly if it is what is on the talk page. If those that are and have been tagging project pages continue to use Comicsproj out of habit and ease, then the 'bots are going to miss varying numbers of pages. I can easily see a fast move to kill the redirect at that point as the 'bots will still be having problems.
Frankly, I'd say re-code the 'bots to recognize the Project banners that don't have a prefix ("WikiProject" or "WP"... or is WP a problem as well?). - J Greb (talk) 21:30, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
  • Indefinitely, I would gather. In terms of my bot, if the template is moved it would first bypass Comicsproj to WikiProject Comics prior to doing the shelling. (FWIW, I would object to someone going through and bypassing all the redirects if they weren't doing other work on the page - that is wasteful.) Recoding is problematic, as the bot would have to somehow pull a list of all project banners and related redirects (several thousand) rather than recognizing standard forms. In any case, benefiting bots is only one reason for standardization. –xenotalk 14:07, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
  • As I indicated above, it (benefiting bots) is currently the only potentially valid reason for this move. The other reasons explained at the general request are not applicable here (doesn't make it easier to use for editors, and doesn't free up potential template names). Fram (talk) 14:41, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
  • Is standardization/consistency among WikiProject banners not a virtue in-and-of-itself? –xenotalk 14:43, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
  • Not really, no... Fram (talk) 14:51, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
  • *shrug* Other than Template:LOCproj, this is the only WikiProject banner template that takes this name form. –xenotalk 15:00, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
But we have numerous forms - I mentions {{Film}} and we also have {{DisambigProject}} and {{NovelsWikiProject}} (just from the ones I use a lot) - there is no standardisation and it doesn't make any sense to address this issue one Project at a time. If you want standardisation for bots then why not add a standardised redirect in and get your bot to sniff them out? This would seem to save a lot of hassle. (Emperor (talk) 00:52, 28 May 2010 (UTC))
Indeed, we may be one of the few to use Proj, but there are many using Project, like the Template:American Football League project, Template:BBCproject or Template:DisambigProject. Never mind things like the Template:WPAFC and Template:WP India. Is there any indication how many templates, used on how many articles, would have to be changed/redirected to get the wanted consistency and ease-of-botuse? Fram (talk) 07:28, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
You may be right. This and some others have really been testing the waters, so to speak. Most of the other requested moves have been well-received. I don't plan to go on some mass-spree of bypassing the redirects for the ones that get changed, but it is easier to have one matrix that will bypass redirects to the standard forms, and then another that does the shelling when the forms are all standard (i.e. the redirects will only be bypassed when shelling is being done). –xenotalk 18:45, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
I have a workaround if this template doesn't get renamed, but I still think standard forms banner names are a good unto themself. –xenotalk 18:45, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
  • Comment wasn't this one of the standard names used for WPP banners? (ie. "WP Name" , "Nameproj" , "NamePoject" , "WikiProject Name" , "WPNAME" ) 76.66.193.224 (talk) 23:33, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
Not as far as I can tell, and there are only 23 banners or redirects of this form: [2]. –xenotalk 14:46, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
Comment- having tried to co-ordinate a cross-project task, of generating lists of unreferenced BLPs, and being told by the Bot coder that I needed to use the actual template name, not a redirect, the WikiProject template naming system is a mess. Look at the range of names that are in use. The sooner we get all the projects aligned, the sooner maintenance tasks can be setup automatically, and not with a lot of effort. You have to start thinking outside your own project. The-Pope (talk) 16:24, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

The number of links to portals featuring a given article is currently fixed at three. Other heroes may someday be featured on as many or more (e.g. Wonder Woman hypothetically featured on Comics, Speculative fiction, Superheroes, Feminism, and Gender Studies). In the documentation, why does the example of the full syntax of the template use the "dispreferred" versions of the parameters that have other aliases? In other words, why is "photo" listed in the example, but "image" is the preferred parameter name given below? The same problem seems to be present for every other parameter that has an alias. Typo in main template banner for Comics

It currently reads like this:

"... is within the scope of WikiProject Comics, a collaborative effort to build an encyclopedic guide to comics on Wikipedia. Get involved! If you like to participate, you can help with the current tasks, visit the notice board...."

It needs to have the word "would" added:

"If would you like to participate, you can help with the...."

Also, there is lots of strange cruft at the top of the page, e.g. page assessments and classes. None of that should be there as templates and documentation of templates aren't in mainspace. I would have cleaned it if I could.-- FeralOink (talk) 12:21, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Proposed edits to template documentation

This would be a good start, although a lot more needs to be done. This is what I did in the documentation and of course, recommend doing similarly to the corresponding real template.

  1. Get rid of the |small parameter as advised in the comments
  2. Move Comic book films out of regional/geographical section and put it with the other types (comic strips, webcomics etc.)
  3. Revise peer review section so it makes sense given that there are two parameters
  4. Change aliases for webcomics category

If you view my suggestions in edit, they are properly formatted. I would make changes but the corresponding work on the templates needs to be done too, and I don't have template editor access rights. Also, the entire Wikiproject for Comics seems kind of moribund. Also, there is a grammatical error even in the big main banner but I couldn't correct it.

I can't work out what you are asking for here. But as a general principle, the documentation should describe the actual behaviour of the template, you should not change the documentation in anticipation of a template change that has not been implemented. If you want parameters to be added, amended or removed, here is how you should proceed:
  1. Start a discussion at WT:WikiProject Comics. Describe why you think that the present template is problematic - what you think is missing, what you think should be altered, what you think should be removed - and in every case state why the present situation is a problem, and why your proposed change would improve it.
  2. Allow other WikiProject members at least a week to discuss it
  3. When a clear consensus has emerged to alter the template, make the appropriate amendments to the template's sandbox (which I have initialised for you)
  4. Make some testcases (see WP:TESTCASES) at Template:WikiProject Comics/testcases
  5. Raise a template-protected edit request on this page. Include a link to the discussion at WT:WikiProject Comics that demonstrates consensus, also a link to the relevant section of the testcases page. Do not paste blobs of code; if you wish to show the changes requred, a simple diff of the sandbox page may be used.
When the live template has been amended (and not before), the documentation can be updated to suit. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:57, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
